  • Lake District working farm site 10 minutes' drive from Millom
  • A 15-minute drive to Haverigg beach; 20 minutes to Coniston Water
  • Heavy horse riding centre on site for taster rides and hacks
Over in the southwestern corner of the Lake District National Park there are lots of ways to explore the scenery – hiking and mountain biking are popular picks of course, but for guests at Baystone Bank Farm Campsite there’s another option in the form of a horse riding centre on site. And this isn’t just any old horse riding centre – this is the world’s only BHS-approved heavy horse riding centre, where guests can sign up to ride splendid shire horses such as Clydesdales, Suffolk Punches and Ardennes. There’s something for all abilities here, from short rides for kids to longer hacks along the area’s bridle paths for more experienced riders. Of course, you don’t have to be a rider to appreciate this corner of the Cumbria countryside – there are plenty of options around for walks too, with footpaths running from the farm up to Black and White Combes, and trails for mountain bikers as well. It doesn’t have to be all action around here though – there’s plenty of scope to chill out at the site, which is part of a working farm. You’re welcome to take a stroll around to see the sheep and horses meandering or look out for birds and deer in the neighbouring woods. There’s also a stream running alongside the farm – it’s a good place to seek out wildlife, or to have a paddle at the end of your day’s activities. Pitches here have access to toilets, showers and a washing-up area, plus a play area to keep the kids busy. Barbecues and campfires are permitted, with supplies for either at the shops in Millom (10 minutes’ drive).

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Good size hardstanding pitches. Showers and toilets were clean. On-site cafe was handy too. Beautiful scenery of the mountains 🏔️ and horses around. There is also a stream which runs through the site.

Disliked: There isn’t anything we would say we disliked to be honest. It was quiet and tidy site. No issues. We had booked the site last minute and changed our dates which Jamie was very accommodating.

Electric grass tent, campervan or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Beautiful location and campervan pitch size was plenty big enough for our sprinter and awning. Pot wash area and showers were basic but adequate with loads of hot water

Disliked: Not easy to find an off the lead dog walk and the location was fairly remote which is fine if you are ok driving to your chosen daily activity (we were)

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, I am glad you found our place spacious and beautiful! We are introducing next year a dog training area (as we struggle to allow dogs off the lead as our surrounding fell area is shared farming rights for livestock) so that there is somewhere for the dogs to be off the lead with all sorts of training toys to use too. We hope you can join us in the peak of busy summer, as that's where our distance comes to it's greatest advantage, never gets as insane here as it does in Coniston or Windermere! Cheers, Jamie

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The views were excellent and there was a very friendly atmosphere. The children on the site were allowed to play on the open spaces and caused no problem at any time, there were no issues regarding this. It was lovely to see children together playing and not on their screens. Pitch was level and good access to water. Fire pits at end of each pitch and owner came round early each evening with bags of logs to purchase.

Disliked: The male toilet facilities were crammed into a small area compared to the female facilities. There was only one urinal for the entire site and two cubicles that were barely big enough to stand up in and had loose toilet seats. The shower cubicles were of a good size but all needed to be re-vamped. Most needed a deep clean, some were rusting and the floors needed replacing. Good amounts of hot water on a push button system.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you for the kind words, we pride ourselves on being a child friendly site and love the idea that kids can get away from their screens! We appreciate your constructive critiscism on our toilet block, this is the last season where it will be as it is due to it needing a revamp for sometime. We hope to make the toiletet facilities larger and more appropriate for when our site is full. I can also only apologise for the difficulty in reaching us, as we have had the Vodafone/02 network down for the last week, so have struggled to reach our campers via the phone.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Gorgeous campsite that has everything. Electric hard pitches if that’s what you want or relaxed natural field free pitches. Showers and toilet block one of nicest I’ve seen. Gorgeous scenery in quieter area of lakes, and gorgeous heavy horses surrounding you.

Disliked: Nothing!

From the manager: Thank you so much for the comment, we appreicate you joining us and are glad you managed to get on the heavy horses whilst you were here. We hope that all our campers can take this opportunity going forward, hope to see you again soon!

Local attractions

If you’re exploring on your own two feet, start with climbs of Black Combe and White Combe, both of which can be accessed directly from the farm. Swinside Stone Circle (10 minutes’ drive) is another local spot worth visiting, or you can set off to see some of the Lake District’s top sights – perhaps Coniston Water (20 minutes) or Stanley Ghyll waterfall (half an hour). Need a little more adrenaline in your life? There are miles of excellent mountain bike trails at Grizedale Forest (half an hour) along with a Go Ape adventure course (40 minutes). Path to Adventure activity centre (20 minutes) can also sort you out with things like canyoning and climbing. Keeping it all a little more low-key, you may like to head to Haverigg beach (15 minutes) for a stroll through the sand dunes, take a steam-powered boat cruise from Coniston (half an hour) or be dazzled by the shiny vintage vehicles at the Lakeland Motor Museum (half an hour).
