Blue skies and clouds over the fell
Stunning winter days
Autumnal colours and views for miles October 25 - The Willows Keswick
Stunning winter days

  • Adults-only and fully hardstanding touring site with fell views
  • Keswick five minutes' drive; Honister Slate Mine half an hour
  • Fresh eggs and milk sold on site; local shop and pub 10 minutes’ walk
With a spectacular backdrop of lakeland fells such as Blencathra, Skiddaw and Latrigg, The Willows is a gorgeous spot for adults-only caravan or campervan holidays in the Lake District National Park. Set between Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake (about five minutes’ drive to either), this farm site is just outside the village of Braithwaite (10 minutes’ walk), and also five minutes’ drive from the cafés and galleries of Keswick (easily accessed via the A66). On site, you can buy essentials such as free-range eggs, fresh milk, butter and a selection of dairy produce. Most other basics (including food for barbecues) can be found at the local shop (10 minutes’ walk), which is open seven days a week. There’s a pub and a tearoom in Braithwaite too. The rural setting of The Willows combines with modern amenities in the wooden shower block to make your stay both convenient and peaceful. Dogs are more than welcome, and you can stretch your legs (or paws) on walking trails accessed right from the pitches. Please just keep your dogs on leads around the site as there are farm animals in the vicinity.

What customers say

This small, peaceful site offers stunning views and is conveniently located for exploring the Lake District. Guests consistently praise the cleanliness of the facilities, including the hot showers, and the friendly, helpful owners. Pitches are hardstanding with EHU and water. While most visitors have a positive experience, some note the pitches can feel close together and the site's proximity to business units gives it an industrial feel. The owner is actively working on site improvements.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked A lovely clean well looked after, quiet site, in walking distance to some lovely pubs and a 45 min walk into Keswick. Bus stops at the top of the road if that’s to far for you and they run frequently. Owners are lovely. Would highly reccomend.

Liked Lovely little site with Incredible views of the surrounding fells. Only about 8 pitches so nice and compact and exactly what you need for a few days walking and enjoying the lakes. Owners are fab. Electric hookup and water on pitch. Nice showers and toilet facilities (with heating!!!) and lots of great walks right from the pitch.

Electric hardstanding touring pitch

Liked It is very good value for the area. The views are spectacular. Proximity to Keswick, Braithwaite village and routes to all parts of north and west Cumbria are really good. For hill climbing, it’s a great location. The bathrooms work very well as they are self-contained and lockable so you could use them like a bathroom at home. Electricity and water are on tap at the pitches. The pre-information is clear and directions are very helpful. There is a great deal of trust in payment as we never had face to face contact. I really respect the entrepreneurial spirit, using the land and environment sensitively to combine practicality and income with a drive to develop the area and provide a conduit for sustainable tourism. It is lovely to see the business units, the community centre, the campsite and the livestock in such close proximity. It’s embedding the idea that the countryside is not a romantic painting but a complex multi-reliant organism. Everyone who was camping was very respectful of the expectation to keep dogs on a lead.

Disliked The touring pitches are small and all loose stone based. I have a very small campervan and usually want to erect an awning, which wasn’t possible here. I do not think that is clear from the images and detail on pitch-up. It is more suited to motor homes and particularly those on a one-night stop. If we’d booked for longer, or had lovely weather, we would have struggled having a ‘camping’ experience.

From the manager: Good morning Elizabeth, thank you so much for your feedback it is so important to us and greatly appreciated. We are indeed hard standing and try and make that implicitly clear in our advertisement on pitch up. We have had guests throughout the summer who have pitched awnings and you will have seen those pictures on our pitch up listing no doubt. We arent always around that is absolutely true as a working farm we are often juggling many tasks at once but we are always only a phone call away and live just behind the units, so if for example you had wanted your awning up, we have previously helped people with that having lots of tools to get the pegs into the stone which we absolutely appreciate isnt the easiest. Thank you again for taking the time to leave your review, Lindsey

Local attractions

When visiting Keswick (five minutes’ drive), be sure to stop at the Derwent Pencil Museum, which explores the history of this humble writing tool and other art materials – with a wide range available at the on-site shop. Afterwards, make your way to the shore of Derwentwater for a canoeing or rowing expedition, or a cruise around the lake. Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) is the place for a meditative walk with an alpaca, a falconry experience or a meet-and-greet session with meerkats, lemurs or tapirs. It’s also possible to witness feeding sessions with lynx and red pandas, and to take part in assorted craft workshops. Among the activities at Honister Slate Mine (half an hour), in the foothills of Dale Head, are underground tours of the mine (including one with a spooky haunted theme, and another where you get to scale the walls of the cavern) and thrilling outdoor pursuits such as a via ferrata climbing route and the null Bridge, high above the Borrowdale Valley.
