  • Peaceful family-run farm site next to the River Derwent
  • Excellent base for hikes, including Scafell and Great Gable
  • Coffee shop; woodfired pizzas on Saturday nights, a short walk away
Setting forth for the Lake District to seek out some scenic views? Settle in to Seatoller Farm and you can start on the scenery-seeing without so much as moving from the site. At this family-run working hill farm in Cumbria, the views are stunning whichever way you turn, taking in vistas of the Borrowdale valley and the River Derwent. At this back to basics site, there’s no wifi or phone signal (except Vodafone in Seatoller itself), so switch off and embrace the wild feel. When you roll up, there’s no reception, so pick out a pitch. Owner Daniel comes around in the morning and evening to check on guests, but they’re not always in the house. Every Saturday night (between 6pm and 8pm), stone-baked pizzas are sold on the farm. Take it back to your tent or tuck in inside the seating barn. Tasty toppings include the site’s own pork and Herdwick lamb. Also up for grabs at the farm (or from Dan on his rounds) are rare breed pork sausages, Herdwick lamb and mint burgers or logs and kindling. A nifty central location in the Lake District National Park means this site is well placed for lots of walks, including scrambling up Scafell, ticking off the Wainwright fells or a leisurely riverside ramble. Protected woodland runs along one side of the farm, with wildlife like bats, buzzards, woodpeckers and owls among the site’s frequent visitors. The low-key facilities preserve the relaxed rural vibe – separate gents’ and ladies toilets are close to the pitches, as are washing-up facilities and drinking water taps; showers are a short walk away at the main farm building. Campfires and barbecues are allowed here, but only if they're kept off the grass (you'll immediately be asked to put out any fires that burn the grass). There are a couple of pubs about a mile away for food and drinks, and a hotel five minutes' walk away for drinks on the terrace. The campsite has excellent access to the local bus service that runs regularly from the farm during the season.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: The nature on the site, all facilities kept nice, clean and tidy. Loved waking up to the gentle noise of the river. Easy access to great hikes around area.

Disliked: Only thing was that there was no service, however from our experience it’s nice to be cut off from network.

From the manager: Thank you Rose for your kind review. We have to agree, the gentle noise of the river is very relaxing and a lovely sound to wake up to. We definitely love that their is no signal on the campsite, it really lets people escape the world they come from to get away from it all and get back to nature. Luckily a new pub in the village has opened where you can access WIFI if needed, but we love to see nobody walking round with a phone in front of them and just being themselves, before technology took over :)

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: All was great for what we needed. But I would mention a few things, not in a negative way, but just to be clearer. - a lot of the van available pitches are not flat. - we were explicitly told 5m was the maximum size and paid a decent amount for our awning only to be greeted by a medium wheelbase sprinter way over 5 meters & parked in an area that was coned off. - No hot water for washing up or washing hands in bathrooms. That was hard to deal with washing up with ice cold fingers. - not completely clear if the water is drinking water, we gathered as there was no sign saying ‘not drinking water’. - the sign off the road is very small, hard to see in the dark. The stay was lovely. The area is wonderful, great access to everything, lovely to be by the river.. everything was very clean and all facilities were super clean. Lovely surroundings.

From the manager: Thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed your stay overall. We did have a van appear that was larger than expected, and it does say a 5m maximum length on the campervan limit. We are working so hard to find some body to connect our hot water to a solar system. We've spent a lot of money on getting hot water down to the off grid site and we hope to have it all connected soon. The water is drinking water, your correct, if it wasn't drinking water, we would definitely have signs saying, however Dan does tell everyone when he goes round, just to make sure people know. We are currently getting new signs made for the roadside. We really hope to welcome you back in the future. Seatoller Farm Campsite

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely location and great facilities. Even though it rained pretty heavily for the first day of our stay we still thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Close to some lovely fell walks, the pizza night on Saturday was a highlight. Sun came out just in time to enjoy an amazing pizza and cold beer in the sun. Also the showers were excellent. Super refreshing, hot water and spacious unlike a lot of campsite showers. Exactly what we needed after getting drenched on a hike.

Disliked: The rain. Obviously can't be helped but some of the site did become very boggy.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to write a great review about our campsite. The sun really did just appear in time for everyone to enjoy their pizzas! We're glad you like the showers, we have renovated them this winter and they are really great. Seatoller Farm Campsite

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked: Loved the farm shop and the pizzas on the Saturday. Good sight with the basics you need. Nice to have pitches but the river as I live the sound of the water. Great view from the pitch buy the stone wall. Very quiet area nothing bothered us.

Disliked: If you want to have a fire make sure you bring your own fire pitch as we had to go out and buy one as they are not provided but fire must be kept off the floor. We found on in a store in Keswick and was perfect.

From the manager: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay on our campsite, and enjoyed your pizzas and used our shop. I will try add the info about the fire pit on to pitch up so future campers know. We hope to see you back in the near future. Seatoller Farm Campsite

Local attractions

Dust off those hiking boots, for Seatoller’s surrounds are stacked with walking trails to suit all comers, from those seeking a gentle stroll through woodland and across heather-strewn fells to those in search of more vertical challenges. The beginning of a couple of the national park’s top climbs are easy to get to too – Great Gable (an hour and a half) and mighty Scafell (a couple of hours). Roam a little further afield for hikes on Catbells (15 minutes’ drive), around the Castlerigg stone circle (25 minutes) or on the slopes of Helvellyn (half an hour away, and a fine choice for mountain bikers too). If you’d like to have a crack at climbing in a controlled environment, try the via ferrata route at Honister Slate Mine, five minutes away, and worth a stop for an underground mine tour even if you’re not up to clinging on to crags. All sound a little tiring? Less demanding days out include the Lake District Wildlife Park (half an hour) and the sculpture trail at Rydal Hall Gardens (40 minutes). It’s worth knocking around Keswick for a bit too, visiting the eccentric Puzzling Place exhibition and Derwent Pencil Museum or taking tipples at the town’s brewery. Alpaca trekking at Lingholm Estate and Whinlatter Forest are some other splendid days out.
