General

  • Peaceful scenic Lake District site three miles from Keswick
  • Excellent base for walks at Skiddaw, Catbells and Derwentwater
  • Pubs, shops, bus stops and hiking trails within walking distance

Heading to the Lake District for handsome scenery and hikes? Hotfoot it to Cumbria’s lovely Lanefoot Farm, in a fab location between the little villages of Thornthwaite and Braithwaite (both within a 15-minute walk for local shops and pubs), and a five-minute drive from the bigger town of Keswick.

Plenty of everyday essentials can be taken care of on site – there’s an information point stacked with local maps and leaflets, a drying room to sort your kit if you’ve been caught in a downpour and a small shop supplied with vital bits and bobs (including wood for the campfire, marshmallows to poke into the flames and ingredients for a tasty breakfast). The site’s toilet block has well-kept toilets and showers, and underfloor heating to avoid chilly toes of a morning.

With all these necessities sorted, it’s time to turn your focus on the scenery: Lanefoot Farm has gorgeous views over the surrounding fells towards Skiddaw, the Helvellyn range and Catbells, among others. If you’d rather see them from closer quarters, you’ll be chuffed to hear that they’re all easily accessed with a short drive, as are other Lake District faves including Whinlatter Forest, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake.

In excellent news for folk travelling without a car, some fells, such as Grisedale Pike and Lord's Seat, can be reached on foot from the farm. Nearby Thornthwaite is the place to pick up the C2C National Cycle Route or flag down a bus to Keswick, Penrith or Cockermouth.

Close to 2 local pubs. They are dining lines really.
Walk into keswick about 1 hour.
Bus stop down the road but they dropped us right outside the campsite on way back.
Lake round the corner...check Google maps though as sat nav took us miles away and it was really walkable. Check viewing point on maps.

The location was handy and close to so many things we also liked that it was dog friendly.

    Disliked:

The amount of people packed into one field during a global pandemic, The fact there was no cleaning spray and kitchen towel to clean down toilets and door handles after using the toilets really surprised us! With how busy the campsite was i thought there would be more cleaning measures in place just to put people at ease, i also discussed this with another camper when waiting to use the toilet and they said the same thing. I understand there was a list of 'corona rules' but on three occasions i saw more than five people in the washrooms etc and no one wearing masks.
Upon arrival we were 'greeted' by a grumpy farmer on site who asked ''What are you doing parking here?'' (We saw the arrow to reception and thought the reception was further up near the cottages) We said we were looking for reception and he pointed to it without another word, wasn't a great first impression. We were told by the friendly guy on reception that the mud on the back field wasn't to bad, they had put sticks where it was bad and that we can drive on to the field, so we did this and got stuck the mud was bad! other campers had to push us out. We saw a further three cars get stuck during our stay. There was just one spot we could pitch up on (unless we wanted to camp in the middle of everyone in mud) and it was on a hill and in mud therefore standing in your tent you were sliding and stepping out of it was a nightmare. I'm aware bad weather played a part in that before our arrival but we felt like we were put on that field when we could of gone on the smaller field near the toilets that had two pitches available on flat land!
The facilities really are basic, It's the first time we hadn't had a freezer on a campsite and a small shop to buy essentials from, I think facilities like this are quite common and basic and maybe a suggestion for the campsite to look into.
The bins were over flowing throughout our stay.
I wouldn't say this is a site for couples if you like a quieter environment, as you are squeezed in with just 2/3 metres between each tent. A good site for families and children. It was the wonderful views on the photos that mostly made me book this site however in reality when sat around your pitch you just see vans and cars as most people keep their cars parked in front of their pitch as there is barely any parking off the field and and not enough space between pitches for people to park.

Overall we didn't really enjoy our stay and is our first negative camping experience unfortunately. We were booked in til Sunday but we left on Saturday afternoon.

Majority of guests did not follow COVID guidance in respect of wearing masks indoors. Group in next pitch constantly swearing for hours who we had to speak to regarding their language in front of our children

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review of our campsite. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay, and that you appreciated our lovely location and hard work cleaning 😊
We are sorry that some campers did not follow the COVID guidance about wearing masks indoors, but at this time we could only advise not enforce. However, new government guidance which means everyone will have to wear a face mask whilst in an indoor public space, comes into force on 8th August, so we will have to insist on everyone wearing one in our washing up area, and if waiting for a shower.
We are sorry that the campers staying on the next pitch were swearing a lot, and that you had to speak to them. In future, please come and speak to us if you have any problems or concerns regarding other campers, or the campsite in general. We would rather hear from you at the time, so that we can do something to help.

Local attractions

Where to start with all the fab things to see and do in the Lake District? Well, if you’re a walker perhaps with a canter up Catbells (10 minutes’ drive), as a warm-up for an attempt to summit the 931 metres of Skiddaw (20 minutes). Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes) is good for a stroll if you’re after something a tad less strenuous.

And if you fancy a few different outdoorsy days? Perhaps an outing to the marina at Derwentwater for sailing or canoeing (or cruises for lazier days), or to Whinlatter Forest Park, where daredevils can take to the downhill mountain bike trails or zoom along the ziplines at the Go Ape adventure park. Both are about five minutes away by car.

There’s some excellent local wildlife to be spotted all around this area, of course, but it’s also worth a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) to see a few things that are rather more exotic. If the weather’s a little damp round the edges (it happens…), drive to Keswick (five minutes) for theatre shows, shopping and the pencil museum. Or you could take refuge in the brewery, of course…

Must see

  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (0.4 miles)
  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (2.3 miles)
  • Cars of the Stars Motor Museum (2.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (7.8 miles)
  • Grasmere and Great Langdale (13.9 miles)
