General

  • Peaceful scenic Lake District site three miles from Keswick
  • Excellent base for walks at Skiddaw, Catbells and Derwentwater
  • Pubs, shops, bus stops and hiking trails within walking distance

Heading to the Lake District for handsome scenery and hikes? Hotfoot it to Cumbria’s lovely Lanefoot Farm, in a fab location between the little villages of Thornthwaite and Braithwaite (both within a 15-minute walk for local shops and pubs), and a five-minute drive from the bigger town of Keswick.

Plenty of everyday essentials can be taken care of on site – there’s an information point stacked with local maps and leaflets, a drying room to sort your kit if you’ve been caught in a downpour and a small shop supplied with vital bits and bobs (including wood for the campfire, marshmallows to poke into the flames and ingredients for a tasty breakfast). The site’s toilet block has well-kept toilets and showers, and underfloor heating to avoid chilly toes of a morning.

With all these necessities sorted, it’s time to turn your focus on the scenery: Lanefoot Farm has gorgeous views over the surrounding fells towards Skiddaw, the Helvellyn range and Catbells, among others. If you’d rather see them from closer quarters, you’ll be chuffed to hear that they’re all easily accessed with a short drive, as are other Lake District faves including Whinlatter Forest, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake.

In excellent news for folk travelling without a car, some fells, such as Grisedale Pike and Lord's Seat, can be reached on foot from the farm. Nearby Thornthwaite is the place to pick up the C2C National Cycle Route or flag down a bus to Keswick, Penrith or Cockermouth.

Location, staff were really friendly and accommodating, accessibility, views were nice, very Clean, facilities were well kept, dry room (Ask Management team for location, as it is well hidden!), majority of the campsite looked lovely.

    Disliked:

Top field (where we stayed) was exceptionally muddy, cars were unable to park near tents due to getting stuck, and as a result there were not enough places to park cars lower down. Not enough toilets or showers for the size of the campsite.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review for our campsite. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We are sorry about the mud...but we had so much rain at the end of August/beginning of September, and the field was being constantly camped on, so it did get very muddy in places 🙁 We wanted to make the camping pitches as good as we could, so we made the decision to keep cars off of the main camping field, but of course this just moved the cars down to another area, which then looked untidy 😕 We are planning to make some changes to the field, and add some more suitable parking areas over the winter.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write your review for our campsite. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We usually have a shop on site, and hope to again next year, but due to the many restrictions, and somewhat confusing government guidance this year, we made the decision not to open our campsite shop. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused. We have been recommending the local village shop in Braithwaite, which is only half a mile up the back lane, and can be reached in 20 minutes if walking, or 5 minutes by car. Keswick is only 3 miles away and has a Co op and a Booths supermarket. There is also a Spar shop at both garages in Keswick.

Local attractions

Where to start with all the fab things to see and do in the Lake District? Well, if you’re a walker perhaps with a canter up Catbells (10 minutes’ drive), as a warm-up for an attempt to summit the 931 metres of Skiddaw (20 minutes). Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes) is good for a stroll if you’re after something a tad less strenuous.

And if you fancy a few different outdoorsy days? Perhaps an outing to the marina at Derwentwater for sailing or canoeing (or cruises for lazier days), or to Whinlatter Forest Park, where daredevils can take to the downhill mountain bike trails or zoom along the ziplines at the Go Ape adventure park. Both are about five minutes away by car.

There’s some excellent local wildlife to be spotted all around this area, of course, but it’s also worth a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) to see a few things that are rather more exotic. If the weather’s a little damp round the edges (it happens…), drive to Keswick (five minutes) for theatre shows, shopping and the pencil museum. Or you could take refuge in the brewery, of course…

Must see

  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (0.6 kilometres)
  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (3.6 kilometres)
  • Cars of the Stars Motor Museum (4.1 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (12.5 kilometres)
  • Grasmere and Great Langdale (22.3 kilometres)
