Pitches with views of Skiddaw

General

  • Peaceful scenic Lake District site three miles from Keswick
  • Excellent base for walks at Skiddaw, Catbells and Derwentwater
  • Pubs, shops, bus stops and hiking trails within walking distance

Heading to the Lake District for handsome scenery and hikes? Hotfoot it to Cumbria’s lovely Lanefoot Farm, in a fab location between the little villages of Thornthwaite and Braithwaite (both within a 15-minute walk for local shops and pubs), and a five-minute drive from the bigger town of Keswick.

Plenty of everyday essentials can be taken care of on site – there’s an information point stacked with local maps and leaflets, a drying room to sort your kit if you’ve been caught in a downpour and a small shop supplied with vital bits and bobs (including wood for the campfire, marshmallows to poke into the flames and ingredients for a tasty breakfast). The site’s toilet block has well-kept toilets and showers, and underfloor heating to avoid chilly toes of a morning.

With all these necessities sorted, it’s time to turn your focus on the scenery: Lanefoot Farm has gorgeous views over the surrounding fells towards Skiddaw, the Helvellyn range and Catbells, among others. If you’d rather see them from closer quarters, you’ll be chuffed to hear that they’re all easily accessed with a short drive, as are other Lake District faves including Whinlatter Forest, Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite Lake.

In excellent news for folk travelling without a car, some fells, such as Grisedale Pike and Lord's Seat, can be reached on foot from the farm. Nearby Thornthwaite is the place to pick up the C2C National Cycle Route or flag down a bus to Keswick, Penrith or Cockermouth.

The amenities aren’t able to cope with large groups of people. The sign to the farm isn’t in sight and the owners were told but did nothing to fix the problem.

Great location surrounded by lovely scenery and the grounds are well kept, the host Gareth (I hope that’s his name!) was really welcoming and made me feel right at home.

The facilities are great, no problems and lots of goodies in the site shop if you forget anything! (They had tunnocks teacakes, which is a camping essential!!!)

There are 3 separate fields to stay in, all have different character about them and nice views, some are better for tents and others for campervans. Electric hook up points are near enough everywhere.

Pubs in walking distance and those that enjoy walking it’s only about 3 miles to Keswick, easy to navigate your way there and lots of public footpaths for alternative routes.

I took my little sausage dog in my homemade camper and we loved it.
Everyone we met on site was very friendly, will definitely be coming again :)

Glorious location! The most relaxing holiday we've had in ages. The site has everything you need, it's a short 10min walk to some (dog friendly) pubs and Keswick is a short drive up the road. Pur dogs absolutely loved watching the resident goose and chickens through the window - we will definitely be back :)) thank you!

This campsite was lovely, lots of pitch space and nice location. The amenities were up to a good standard and always clean, apart from when it had been raining but this can't be helped. Friendly staff and very helpful.

Great location for Keswick and surrounding fells, lovely ‘family feel’ to the site, has all the necessary basics. We forgot our tent pegs (yes, massive schoolboy error!) and the owner scouted around to find spares, also when our daughter fell into Ullswater and soaked her shoes we were able to dry them in the boiler room!

Local attractions

Where to start with all the fab things to see and do in the Lake District? Well, if you’re a walker perhaps with a canter up Catbells (10 minutes’ drive), as a warm-up for an attempt to summit the 931 metres of Skiddaw (20 minutes). Castlerigg Stone Circle (10 minutes) is good for a stroll if you’re after something a tad less strenuous.

And if you fancy a few different outdoorsy days? Perhaps an outing to the marina at Derwentwater for sailing or canoeing (or cruises for lazier days), or to Whinlatter Forest Park, where daredevils can take to the downhill mountain bike trails or zoom along the ziplines at the Go Ape! adventure park. Both are about five minutes away by car.

There’s some excellent local wildlife to be spotted all around this area, of course, but it’s also worth a visit to the Lake District Wildlife Park (10 minutes) to see a few things that are rather more exotic. If the weather’s a little damp round the edges (it happens…), drive to Keswick (five minutes) for theatre shows, shopping and the pencil museum. Or you could take refuge in the brewery, of course…

Must see

  • Whinlatter Forest & Visitor Centre (0.4 miles)
  • Mirehouse Historic House and Gardens (2.3 miles)
  • Cars of the Stars Motor Museum (2.6 miles)

National Trust

  • Wordsworth House and Garden (7.8 miles)
  • Grasmere and Great Langdale (13.9 miles)
