  • Quiet and secluded site with spectacular views of the Lake District
  • Five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake; 15 to Keswick, Cockermouth
  • Spa next door; five minutes' walk to the Lake District Wildlife Park
Could trips to Cumbria get any more spectacular than at this serene site…? Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds. Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?). Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast. If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

What customers say

This is a small, immaculately clean and well-maintained campsite. Guests praise the beautiful, quiet setting, friendly and helpful owners, and outstanding facilities, particularly the individual toilet cubicles for each pitch. Its location is ideal for exploring the Lake District, with the Lake District Wildlife Park next door and good public transport links to Keswick. Wi-Fi is generally good. Minor points raised include the occasional wait for the single shower and a lack of on-site shop.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Fantastic owners, really friendly and helpful.
Great pitches with a lovely view on a fab little site, no road noise, all you can hear are the birds, cows mooing and if you're lucky, the gibbon from the Wildlife park 😄
Excellent spotless facilities, allocated your own toilet that matches your pitch number.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Great pitches, quiet, a toilet per pitch for your use only and nice friendly owner. No complaints from us will definitely stay again when in the north lakes.

Disliked Only 1 shower but there is only 5 camper pitches so not the end of the world but could potentially be an issue but did not effect our experience.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Good hard standing pitches which are nice and level. Toilets and shower were immaculately clean and well maintained. Wildlife park next door for easy visit and a spa hotel and restaurant within walking distance if you’re feeling fancy!

Owner Sid is lovely and very helpful with information about public transport etc. It’s lovely and quiet with views of Belted Galloway cows in the field next door and the occasional sounds of Gibbons from the park.

Disliked No shop on site which is always useful for essentials so just be prepared but Keswick is very close.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet, peaceful site, right next to wildlife park and close to bus stop to get into Keswick etc. perfect mini break.
The toilet/shower block was clean and the shower was nice and hot. A good idea to have our own numbered toilet cubicle.
Sid was very friendly and helpful and ensured we had a warm welcome.

Disliked It is only small, perfect for a couple but my son was a little disappointed at first that there’s no play park.
Had to pack up motorhome and drive into Cockermouth for supplies - no local shop for bread/milk etc.

Local attractions

For ambles around art galleries and wanders in Wordsworth House and Garden, Keswick is eight miles away. Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls. Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car. To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away. If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.
