  • Quiet and secluded site with spectacular views of the Lake District
  • Five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake; 15 to Keswick, Cockermouth
  • Spa next door; five minutes' walk to the Lake District Wildlife Park
Could trips to Cumbria get any more spectacular than at this serene site…? Answers on a postcard please to Coalbeck Caravan Park… in a central setting for touring the Lake District and nearby coastline, this haven has views of the region’s woods, fields and hills from its spacious grounds. Getting you to linger a little longer before heading out for explores, the spacious pitches at Coalbeck Caravan Park are prime for spotting creatures like rare red squirrels among the pretty planters, and are a suntrap when the rays come out too. But if rain’s threatening? A spa next door to the site means you can book in for a treatment (or three…?). Back outdoors, the site’s a five-minute drive from Bassenthwaite Lake – one of the only bodies of water in the region with no settlements around it – so it’s got a peaceful vibe yet is close enough to many of the main sights in the northern part of the lakes. Case in point: it’s around a 15-minute drive to historic towns like Keswick and Cockermouth and about a half an hour to the coast. If you’re looking for leisure without having to get behind the wheel, Lake District Wildlife Park’s 24 acres of land home to more than 100 animals is a five-minute walk away. You’ll also need to ditch the car to visit The Lakes Distillery: this artisan gin, whisky and vodka producing place a 25-minute stroll from the park has tastings, tours and a small shop where you can wander off with some of its wares.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked Quite, scenic, well situated for the Northern Lake District.
A really nice site with gravel and grass pitches so handy for using awnings.
Lovely clean toilet shower facilities with each pitch 5 in total being allocated their own toilet, and sharing a large wet room shower.
Pot wash sink under a lean too shed, if lucky you can wash your pots and watch birds visiting the bird feeding station or possibly even a red squirrel.
Small enclosed grassed area for dogs to exercise.
Plenty of local walks. The whole site is kept very tidy.
Hosts Sid and Liz are friendly and helpful.
The wild life park is within walking and hearing distance with one of its resident Gibbons giving a morning call out which we found quite nice.
Keswick and Cockermouth are within 15 mins drive. We hope to visit again.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked A very well maintained site with only 5 pitches for tourers, the rest are static. Each of the 5 pitches has its own toilet in the block some 100 meters away. Facilities are extremely clean and well maintained by Sid who will welcome you and stop by for a chat. You're a 5 minute walk from the wildlife park so be prepared to be awoken buy a noisy Gibbon at around 0430. A Hotel spare a 10 minute walk and further afield is a caravan park with a bar and Bistro 20 minutes away. Good WIFI and my digital aerial worked fine along with my mobile phone (O2) No shops close by so be prepared.

Liked Friendly welcome from Sid, took us round the site and chatted about points of interest nearby.
Small site with EHU, quiet. Very clean toilets and shower (only one shower, didn’t have to wait, not a push button one yay!).
Bus stops nearby, pub within walking distance.
Really enjoyed our stay and would love to return.

Electric hardstanding and grass motorhome pitch

Liked A lovely peaceful site. The facilities were scrupulously clean and the area was great. Sid, the site manager, was super friendly and helpful.
There is a short walk over the field, through the grounds of a posh hotel, to a larger neighbouring site with a bar and bistro which serves pizza.
Already recommended Coalbeck to friends and family.

Local attractions

For ambles around art galleries and wanders in Wordsworth House and Garden, Keswick is eight miles away. Cockermouth, on the other hand, about the same distance to the south east, is just the place for meandering through medieval and Georgian alleyways under castle walls. Or for classic Lake District outdoorsy options instead, Derwentwater's walking and cycling circuit (set aside about half a day to complete if strolling) takes half an hour to reach in the car. To break up traipsing around the tarns inland, Solway Coast Area of Natural Beauty is 40 minutes by car, while underground explores at Honister Slate Mine in Borrowdale are 45 minutes away. If you fancy staying above ground and sauntering southwards, Lake Ullswater steamer cruises are also 45 minutes from the park and Lake Windermere is the place to waterski (an hour and five minutes away from Coalbeck Caravan Park). To scale one of the region’s highest peaks, Scafell Pike takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach.
