  • A 10-minute drive from Windermere and the World of Beatrix Potter
  • Ensuite shower room, barbecue, woodburner and bed linen provided
Listening to the soothing soundtrack of the Lake District is a favourite pastime at Gilpin Mill – and what a gorgeous little spot the owners have given their guests for that very activity. There’s just the one shepherd’s hut at this Cumbria site, 20 minutes’ drive from Kendal, and it’s set up for adult guests only – so you’ll have plenty of space all to yourselves. The hut has been parked in its own private garden area, where you can sit out with a cup of tea or get a barbecue going with the sounds of the sheep in the next field and the River Gilpin running close by. The surroundings are of course rather lovely, but so is the interior. A cosy double bed with good-quality bedding is a highlight, as is a woodburning stove to keep things nice and warm. An ensuite bathroom with shower (and towels provided), a mini kitchen (with kettle, toaster, crockery, glasses etc) and an electrical point with two USB ports add to the list of facilities, and there’s also bottled drinking water to make sure you’ve got a safe supply. No doubt you’ll already have clocked that the Lake District is an excellent place for outdoor activities – and this site is well set for including plenty of them on your itinerary. Windermere is about 10 minutes’ drive away for watersports and boat trips, and there are plenty of places nearby for walking, climbing, golf and cycling too (with safe bike storage on site if you need it). If your top activity is walking or cycling to a country pub, you’ll be pleased to hear that the nearest is a 40-minute stroll away across fields.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: We loved it all. From the stool to climb into the bed to the willow heart. The woodturning stove which only needed a small log to keep the room warm. The fire pit outside which we would have loved to sit next to, but the weather wasn't on our side. The location is superb. Right under a huge oak tree with sheep in the next field and the river below.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: We had a wonderful stay in the shephard's hut! Super cosy and secluded - just what we hoped for. The hut itself is very comfortable (especially the bed), with brilliant facilities. And the view of the feilds - and sheep - when waking up in the morning... simply glorious! Host Jo (and Doug the dog) went above and beyond to make sure we had the perfect stay.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: A really sweet and cosy place to stay. We loved it and would certainly stay again. Neat, clean, well-appointed (only a single gas cook top, but that is fine) and a super comfortable bed, which doubles as a great spot to sit and knit or read when the weather is a bit rainy. Single lane road access to the site is fun, so take it slowly, and don't be afraid to reverse if you need to let someone else pass! Jo the host and her dog Doug were very welcoming.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: My girlfriend and I booked this for my birthday weekend and we had a fantastic time! The weather unfortunately was dreadful, so we couldn't do as much walking as we would have liked, however the Gilpin Mill was brilliant. Very clean and cosy - It had a lovely shower. When we did get a slight break in the weather, we were able to set up the camp fire out the front and toast some marshmallows. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting the area. Great location for walks and near the local pub - The Brown Horse - where we had a fantastic Sunday roast.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: Gilpin Mill Shepherds hut was simply perfect. I booked a last minute trip, and I can't put into words how wonderful this spot is. The hut is spotless, located in idyllic surroundings, and I was blessed with the best weather. The location is perfect for walks all around Southern Lakes. As a single female, I felt safe, and instantly relaxed. I cannot recommend this place more highly.

Damson shepherd's hut

Liked: This is such an amazing place almost didn’t want to do a review because it was so magical. If you are the type of people who enjoy being in nature and just want to escape then I challenge you to find a more perfect spot. Jo was so welcoming and Doug the dog a perfect gentleman, we saw deer on our early morning walks plus many beautiful birds right outside the door and the bluebells scent filled the air each day…..just perfect

Local attractions

All set to see the lakes? Start your exploration at Windermere (10 minutes’ drive), where you can see the scenery from a boat trip, head out on a paddleboard or canoe, or take a walk to some renowned viewpoints (Brant Fell, just above the town of Bowness-on-Windermere, is a good choice). Not far from the lake’s edge are the pretty Arts-and-Crafts house Blackwell and the World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, where you can learn all about the life of one of the area’s most loved former residents. For more historic outings, try Levens Hall or Sizergh Castle (both 20 minutes). Setting your sights a little further afield, you could also head over to Coniston Water (40 minutes), take a walk around Tarn Hows (45 minutes) or make a trip to Rydal Water (half an hour) to combine lakeside views with a climb to Rydal Cave. Predator Experience - Wolf Experience (25 minutes) and tours of Hawkshead Brewery (15 minutes) are good options for a change of pace.
