  • Peaceful pop-up site with stunning Lake District National Park views
  • Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre 15 minutes’ drive; Windermere 20 minutes
  • Showers available; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
Tucked away down a quiet farm track 10 minutes’ drive from the rural Cumbrian village of Staveley, the pop-up site at Frost Hole is a peaceful retreat for anyone seeking simplicity and solitude. With wild pitches set against the stunning backdrop of mountains and fells in the Lake District National Park, it’s a gorgeous spot in which to unwind and reconnect with nature. This off-grid site is basic but spectacular, with grass pitches, showers, toilets and space to park your car. With lots of space, you can pitch up wherever you fancy; you’re pretty much guaranteed blazing sunsets on clear evenings and – thanks to the lack of light pollution – stellar celestial displays after dark. Frost Hole is positioned on the crossroads of several scenic footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking trails for anyone wanting to explore locally. A bakery, cafés, pubs and shops are all in Staveley, from where you can hop on bus number 555 to explore the Lake District, or take the train to Kendal and Windermere from the station.

What customers say

This picturesque campsite offers stunning views and a peaceful, rural experience, often described as "wild camping meets glamping." Visitors consistently praise the exceptionally clean and well-maintained portaloos and hot shower facilities. The friendly and accommodating hosts are frequently highlighted, along with the site's excellent location for walks, wild swimming, and exploring nearby villages. While some note pitches can be sloped, and basic facilities are provided, the overall sentiment is overwhelmingly positive, with many recommending and planning return visits.

Liked We had a great time here! Beautiful spot with great views. The facilities and the property were immaculate.

Most of all the owners were amazing, we stayed on a night that England were playing in the world cup, as there is little signal on site they hosted everyone on site who wanted to watch it in their garden at their home. Very welcoming and lovely people!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Just such a beautiful little place to camp. The toilets and shower are spotless (maybe the cleanest we have seen!) and the owners are so warm and friendly, even inviting everyone down to their farm to watch the football that night! Lovely walks right from the site and a shallow tarn within 15-20 mins walk, which made it a dreamy spot to escape busy life.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Gorgeous, unique camp site with spectacular views and nice amenities. Clean and nice smelling portaloos, hot shower with soaps and shampoo. Think wild camping meets glamping. Chloe and Lyndon were also incredible friendly and accommodating as well as making some great reccs. To top it all off, some amazing wild swim spots 30 min walk from the site

Disliked Quite a hilly site so unless you’re first few pitches, you’re most likely going to be on a slope

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked We had the most amazing stay at Frost Hole campsite this week! The owners were so welcoming and the site views were incredible. The amenities were very clean, and the small details really made our stay even better. The owners told us about a wild swimming spot at the top of the ridge which was so beautiful.
Would highly recommend this site - lovely owners, reasonable price, and spectacular views. Thank you so much for having us! Kelly & Jodie

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Beautiful location overall, lovely owners and fellow campers were lovely too.

Toilets and the shower were a great bonus too, with some simple sanitary products and very clean. I did sustain a little head injury which meant a short trip to a local UTC but it was my dogs fault (and partially mine haha ) but still enjoyed the gorgeous views regardless.

Disliked Nothing at all, we will be back once I recover

Liked Campsite is in a fantastic wild location, everyone was lovely and the nicest portaloos have ever used!! The shower was fab too. We even saw a whole host of wildlife while the site is surrounded by sheep, we had deer visitors and swallows diving everywhere, was great to sit and relax in nature even in the rain! We discovered great walks from here including up to Potter Tarn and Gurnal Dubs for wild swimming and it is near a fantastic chippy and gelato in Staveley, what more could you need!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked A wonderful campsite with stunning setting and friendly owners. A last minute booking for us and the owners were very helpful when we had a little difficulty finding the site (completely our fault), they provided a wonderful hand drawn map which led us right to the gate from Stavely. Despite the late hour and then being on holiday they still ensured that we made it to the campsite, for which we were very grateful! I can't recommend this site enough!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Superb setting with a warm welcome.

Disliked Facilities fine for a small number of campers could come under pressure if the site attracts larger numbers at its peak.

Local attractions

Hikes directly from the pitches head up to rugged Brunt Knott (25 minutes’ walk), or you can try for the peak of Kentmere (nearly two hours). A longer ramble leads to Brant Fell Viewpoint (2.5 hours) for views over Windermere, or you can take the kids on gentle strolls around the lake’s shoreline instead (20 minutes’ drive). Once down by the lake, pop into Windermere Jetty Museum (also 20 minutes) to see the displays of historic boats before hopping onto a steamer for a cruise on the water. You can book dinghy sailing at Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre (20 minutes), or try kayaking and windsurfing from Hodge Howe Watersports Centre (15 minutes). Most kids love the interactive Peter Rabbit-themed exhibits at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes), and you can also visit Potter’s former home at National Trust-owned Hill Top (45 minutes). If you’d rather not stray so far from home base, feed the calves and Herdwick sheep at the Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes).
