  • Peaceful pop-up site with stunning Lake District National Park views
  • Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre 15 minutes’ drive; Windermere 20 minutes
  • Showers available; pubs and shops 10 minutes’ drive
Tucked away down a quiet farm track 10 minutes’ drive from the rural Cumbrian village of Staveley, the pop-up site at Frost Hole is a peaceful retreat for anyone seeking simplicity and solitude. With wild pitches set against the stunning backdrop of mountains and fells in the Lake District National Park, it’s a gorgeous spot in which to unwind and reconnect with nature. This off-grid site is basic but spectacular, with grass pitches, showers, toilets and space to park your car. With lots of space, you can pitch up wherever you fancy; you’re pretty much guaranteed blazing sunsets on clear evenings and – thanks to the lack of light pollution – stellar celestial displays after dark. Frost Hole is positioned on the crossroads of several scenic footpaths, bridleways and mountain biking trails for anyone wanting to explore locally. A bakery, cafés, pubs and shops are all in Staveley, from where you can hop on bus number 555 to explore the Lake District, or take the train to Kendal and Windermere from the station.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Super friendly host, clean facilities and stunning surroundings.

Disliked Not loads of flat pitches (fine for small tents but you might struggle with a large one).

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Frost Hole is a rare gem of a campsite! The views are spectacular, especially the sunsets, and Chloe and Lyndon are superb hosts. The hot shower was divine and the location is perfect for a hike or run up Brunt Knott and into Kentmere, or exploring Staveley and the Lake District. We’ll definitely be back!

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked We loved this camping spot and will definitely be back! We were looking for somewhere quiet and more wild campy as opposed to some of the bigger campsites around, but still wanted access to a shower and toilet facilities… this campsite was exactly what we were after! Gorgeous views and a quiet and relaxed campsite. The couple running it live onsite and are really friendly and always around to help. They had drinking water onsite, a portaloo that was kept very clean and well stocked and a hot shower facilities too.

Disliked Nothing

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked My partner and myself absolutely loved the views and the serenity of the farm it was Fantastic! She saw sheep on the road up and was ecstatic to see them and then the bats later at night were also a good little treat to watch in the night.

And the SHOWER! Phenomenal, just what we needed when we got up in the crisp fresh morning.

All in all 10/10.

We very much look forward to staying here again.

Local attractions

Hikes directly from the pitches head up to rugged Brunt Knott (25 minutes’ walk), or you can try for the peak of Kentmere (nearly two hours). A longer ramble leads to Brant Fell Viewpoint (2.5 hours) for views over Windermere, or you can take the kids on gentle strolls around the lake’s shoreline instead (20 minutes’ drive). Once down by the lake, pop into Windermere Jetty Museum (also 20 minutes) to see the displays of historic boats before hopping onto a steamer for a cruise on the water. You can book dinghy sailing at Windermere Outdoor Adventure Centre (20 minutes), or try kayaking and windsurfing from Hodge Howe Watersports Centre (15 minutes). Most kids love the interactive Peter Rabbit-themed exhibits at The World of Beatrix Potter Attraction (20 minutes), and you can also visit Potter’s former home at National Trust-owned Hill Top (45 minutes). If you’d rather not stray so far from home base, feed the calves and Herdwick sheep at the Lakeland Farm Visitor Centre (15 minutes).
