General

  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site

How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands.

As it's a farm site, a farm shop is at your disposal too, selling foodie essentials as well as wood for firepits under the Cumbrian stars. This is excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats.

Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities; a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

The site was very nice (shame the weather wasn't).

Convenient for Kendall town and Windermere.

The toilets were clean and the staff were friendly and helpful. I had a question about the number of cars which was answered quickly.

Excellent stay in comfortable lodges 10/09/2018

  • Fox's Den 1 bedroom lodge

  • Liked:

The camping lodges that we stayed in were very clean, very nicely furnished with a comfortable double bed and a day bed acting as a sofa (there were only 2 of us in each lodge), and nicely warm. The owners were very helpful when we arrived later than planned, and also opened the shop so that we could buy firewood.
The toilet block was clean and warm and easy to find in the dark!
The camp site is also under an hours walk along country lanes to Witherslack (which has an amazing pub (the Derby Arms)), and only a few minutes off of the A590 so is well located for exploring the lakes.

The stay was good. Free available fire pits in good distance away both to the lakes with amazing scenery and close by to the peak district. Good washing up facilities and most importantly warm water. Would recommend.

    Disliked:

The ground for pitching does have a lot of stones, so made things slightly more challenging.

The dryer didn't work, seemed to turn on but wouldn't spin so was afraid it might blow up if continued using it.

From the manager...

Your were right about the dryer, thankfully it was only one day with-out. We have a brand new one now.

Local attractions

A particularly viewsome way to explore these viewsome surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre 10 minutes' drive away for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first.

If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife.

Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
