  • In the Cumbrian hills a couple of miles from Witherslack
  • A 15-minute drive from Grange-over-Sands and 25 from Windermere
  • Campfires allowed: firepits for hire and wood for sale on site
How might you fancy a peaceful and well-equipped Lake District place to stay, among the peaceful hills of Cumbria, and with easy access to famed Lake District destinations including Lake Windermere, Ambleside, Cartmel and Kendal? Bed down at quiet and secluded Moss Howe Farm for all the above, a couple of miles from local village Witherslack and 15 minutes' drive from Grange-over-Sands. This is an excellent setting for campfire evenings: guests can arrange firepit hire by adding a request to the Moss Howe team when booking, or use their own barbecues as long as they're raised off the ground and placed on top of the firepit using the supplied grill. A shop and pub are nearby in Witherslack for supplies and other eats. Moss Howe is well equipped, with modern shower, washroom and toilet facilities, plus a tumble dryer in the ladies' shower block, and dishwashing basins just outside. Charging facilities are available for an extra fee; freshwater taps are around the accommodation areas, and wifi is at reception.

Liked We really liked the quiet site. The staff were very friendly. The addition of the shop, tap room and food available was great. Facilities were modern.

Disliked Dog poo on our pitch when we arrived. Showers floor gets very wet, water doesn’t seem to flow towards the drain near the door. No signs asking guests to tidy it up after themselves which was a shame.

Liked The site was clean and a lot of facilities available. The shop had all the things you would need. The view from the tent was beautiful with full view of the surrounding fields.

Disliked We had a spacious pitch however some spaces looked abit crammed in. The site offered a pie, pizza and breakfast van however not available the nights we where there so keep and eye for the opening times. The site is in the middle of no where with a lot of windy roads.

Liked Loved the facilities and how the campsite was quiet but still family friendly. Great sized site with plenty to do nearby! Staff were very friendly and even had fresh breakfast cooked to order on site. The site was in quite poor signal but there was wifi which was amazing!

Valley View power optional grass campervan or tent campsite

Liked Great, little site with clean toilets and showers.

Staff super helpful and friendly.

Tap House available each night and basics available in shop (open 8-10am and 3-8pm). Food available in morning and 2 evenings a week if pre-ordered.

About 15-20min drive to Kendal which is nearest largish town for take aways and shopping.

Disliked Our allotted pitch was near the toilets and we could hear the hand drier going off regularly.

Also quite a strong smell from the toilet area 😞

Local attractions

A particularly scenic way to explore these surroundings is atop a horse, so make your way first to the Witherslack Hall Equestrian Centre, 10 minutes' drive away, for rides through the woods or on the local fell. A big sheltered arena is also at the centre if you'd like to practise your cantering first. If horses aren't for you, take to the car instead for the spectacularly scenic 25-minute drive to Windermere and Consiton Water via the A590, among the views of the east side of the lake to Bowness, Troutbeck and Ambleside. You'll need at least a day at Britain's biggest natural water lake, for steam ferry rides from Bowness Bay to Waterhead at Ambleside, or boating trips around the water and Windermere's 18 islands. Also have a potter around Lakeside Pier at the southern end of the lake (the ferry from Bowness finishes here), for the Aquarium of the Lakes showcasing Windermere's wildlife. Hikes, mountain biking and lake and mountain views are at Grizedale Forest, 35 minutes away.
