  • Quiet wildlife haven beside the river Winster in the Lake District
  • A 15-minute drive from Windermere and 40 minutes from Ambleside
  • Kayaks and fishing rods for hire; a short drive to local footpaths
Roll out of bed, have a brew by the river and hire out a kayak for a peaceful paddle… that’s the sort of morning routine you might expect when you stay at Dob Coppice in the south of the Lake District National Park. Another option is to head straight for the Lakes – paddleboarding on Windermere (15 minutes’ drive), rowing boat trip from Ambleside (40 minutes) or a loop of Grasmere on foot (50 minutes) perhaps? This peaceful place has a remote spot on a quiet section of the river Winster. It’s a wildlife haven, that’s for sure, with owls tooting at night and regular starry skies due to low light pollution. You’re welcome to start your exploration via the river – the site hires out kayaks for a paddle or fishing rods for those who would prefer to stay on the shore and try their hand at reeling in brown trout. Since there’s no fencing between the land and the water, the site doesn’t recommend this location for families with children under the age of five. Dogs, however, are likely to enjoy the set-up (they’re permitted, so long as they’re sociable and don’t chase any livestock). While you’ll be away from the noise and the action of the Lake District's hotspots, they’re always a short car ride away. Closer by is Witherslack (10 minutes’ drive), which has gorgeous public footpaths with country pubs, wooded hillsides and limestone landscapes to see along the way. Pick up supplies at farm shops or village shops within 10 to 15 minutes’ drive of Dob Coppice ready for the barbecue spot on site. Other facilities at base include a simple toilet and shower trailer. The site will also supply guests with a bundle of wood for their stay.

Local attractions

Peaceful walks can be found in plentiful supply around this neck of the woods. Local wildlife havens include Whitbarrow National Nature Reserve (10 minutes' drive) and Foulshaw Moss Nature Reserve (10 minutes). The Fairy Steps (20 minutes) is just one of the beauty spots in the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (20 minutes) over the estuary too. If you like your walks historical, you might prefer to trace the wildlife walk around the National Trust’s Sizergh (15 minutes), a historical house and estate. To the north, the National Trust’s Hill Top (half an hour) contains hay meadows once wandered by Beatrix Potter herself, as well as her 17th-century farmhouse. There’s more than one way to make your way around Grizedale Forest (35 minutes). You might want to take to two wheels, a mountain bike, Segway, horseback or lift your feet off the ground on zipwires at Go Ape.
