Well-kept grass pitches

General

  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive

Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch.

And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.)

As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views.

Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Please note

No cars/motorbikes by the pitch/unit. All cars must be parked in the designated area.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

    Great hospitality.
Absolutely beautiful views over Bassenthwaite lake in the paddock area.
    Toilets/showers are clean.
    Pitches are very spacious.
    Peaceful.
Great walks, brilliant wildlife park & lakes distillery very close by - fantastic for days out.

My first camping experience & this was the perfect way to start. Basically everything is as good as it possibly can be on a working farm campsite, I would highly recommend staying here. I will definitely be coming back.

What can I say? We have visited Irton House Farm a number of times and it feels like coming home. From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome and Lin and Nic couldn’t do enough for us.

The facilities are simple but spotless and warm with good electric showers. Soap is provided which doesn’t happen at all sites!

The views are stunning and my poor attempts at photography don’t do it justice. Simply watching the way the light changes the look of Skiddaw is better than the telly, although if you need your televisual fix there is a good signal! Get up early and catch the wonderful sight of the mist hanging low over the Bassenthwaite valley gradually disappearing as the air warms up.

In all, this is a little piece of heaven and we feel quite privileged to be allowed to share it!
