  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive
Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Paddock electric hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked: 🤩 Warm & friendly welcome ⛰️ Amazing views ☀️ Weather 💚 Peace and quiet 🧼 Clean facilities We have been visiting Irton Farm for the last 6 years and it gets better every time! Lin, Nic and their lovely family are perfect hosts and nothing is too much trouble. The site has the most AMAZING view of Lake Bassenthwaite and because there are just a few pitches the views are unspoilt 🥰 WE LOVE IT!

Disliked: Having to come home

Orchard electric grass tent pitch (five person, large)

Liked: The location was perfect. Gorgeous views around the whole site, quiet spacious pitches and the amenities are so clean and fresh. The porches we had were surrounded by trees/ planting on 3 sides and felt very safe and enclosed.

Disliked: Nothing! I would suggest some low down solar floor lights near to the toilets and around the field/pitches as it was really dark walking back from the toilet at night. (It was ok walking there as the toilets had some lights but then very dark going back)

From the manager: Thanks for your feedback. As you mentioned we do have mains-powered lighting at the toilet/shower block throughout the night and we do have a number of solar lights on the steps and around the campsite, between each of the pitches, so I will be checking if these are still operating tonight and effective. Thanks for the great review and your review scores.

Paddock electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: The best campsite I’ve ever stayed at. The views from the paddock were stunning. Big pitch space with plenty of space between pitches. Facilities were pristine. Even though it rained quite a bit, it didn’t spoil due to the excellent location and views. The pitch came with its own fire pit too which was a lovely surprise!

Disliked: The only thing I would say is there is just 2 showers which meant we had to queue but honestly, not a major issue and the view while you waited was just perfect.

Liked: Site nice and peaceful, quiet, lovely secluded pitches. Fab views

Disliked: Having a quiet curfew of 9.30

From the manager: Thanks for the great review scores. Unfortunately, we have conceded to having a quiet time this year, following noisy groups and individuals spoiling the very nice, peaceful and quiet site that you and everyone else enjoy. While we do have a quiet time, we do provide the wilderness campfire area, by the Stone Circle away from the camping pitches, for those wanting to enjoy themselves after quiet time. There is also the option of booking the entire 12 camping site pitches for your group, so you can have the site to yourselves. Thanks for the feedback and review.

Paddock electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: The most clean, tidy and organised farm we have had the pleasure to stay in. Individual toilet cubicles amazingly clean and up to date, showers spacious and warm with plenty of places to set your kit down without it getting wet. View from the pitch was postcard quality. Wouldn’t hesitate to stay here again next time passing through. For those with kids there is also a play area and a socialising area thoughtfully placed away from the pitches so people can chat and laugh without disturbing those who head to bed early.

Paddock electric grass tent or campervan pitch (large)

Liked: Stayed in the Paddock field for 7 nights. People have different requirements in what they look for in a good site. This site hit the spot perfectly for us. The views, the lovely welcome from Nic, the size of pitch, the cleanliness of the facilities, a games room and so quiet. No road noise, just nature. Love the cars being parked away from the pitches, never had that before and it worked well. We will return, it was so relaxing, even in the rain 😊Thank you

Paddock electric hardstanding touring pitch (large)

Liked: Excellent site. A friendly welcome and tour of the site from Nic, who also provided a longer hook up cable, because ours wouldn’t reach👍. Very good views of the surrounding scenery and lake. Nic is in the middle of building a viewing lounge for campers to take in the views. There is a games room and play area for the children. Being on a working farm we were greeted every morning with free roaming chickens. Great toilet/shower facilities, plenty of room and clean. Looking forward to visiting again with the lounge finished and be able to take in the views once again.

From the manager: I think these chickens need their own review site, they get more press than the Prime Minister :) Thanks for the great review and look forward to seeing you back again soon.

Local attractions

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
