Well-kept grass pitches

General

  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive

Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch.

And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.)

As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views.

Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

We booked at last minute but we still had our choice of two excellent pitches for our campervan. I felt like we'd struck gold as there's not a bad spot on this site, it's absolutely beautiful with amazing views, a great host and friendly animals. We loved the warm welcome and being made to feel instantly relaxed after a long drive down from Scotland, only wish we could have stayed another night or two.

Absolutely everything! Fantastic views, so serene and peaceful. Lovely owners and a well run and clean campsite. Showers were immaculate and always kept clean with mop buckets provided for you to wipe up after your use. Horses so friendly. We went out with Lin and Kim on their Sheparding duties which was great fun and really interesting. There is a barn with pool, snooker and table tennis to spend a couple of hours. Nic told us all about his new plans which sound fantastic too. Local pub is short drive and not in waking distance but nice to just sit and drink with your own views and have s’mores! We will most definitely be back and more than once!

Booked last minute as we had to change our Mountain Biking plans from Wales to the Lake District, surprise arrival within 15 minutes of placing our booking but it was no trouble. Gave us a great pitch on a hard standing, perfect for working on the bikes etc.

I would describe this place as the perfect lake district campsite, excellent views, beautiful farm and extremely welcoming and friendly owners. Having booked last minute and turning up on their doorstep about 30 minutes later it was a relief to be met by such friendly people.

Also exciting to see the plans for next year.

I would describe this site as perfect for all users, On this occasion I was with 3 friends on a mountain biking visit staying in a motorhome, and I am already planning a camping trip with my wife and dog, and a group visit in their self catering cottages with my family!

The location is excellent for all outdoor activities and is only a short trip to Keswick and Cockermouth.

Special thanks to Nic for showing us the Mountain biking route around Skiddaw, a brilliant day out.
