Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Aquest càmping ofereix vistes impressionants i instal·lacions netes i modernes. Els hostes valoren els propietaris amables, els espais amplis i l'ambient tranquil. Em va agradar Nice sized pitch with fabulous views. Easy to travel around area. Toilets/showers clean but can imagine may have to queue if busy. Games room, shop and nice lounge area if required.

Em va agradar Peaceful site with beautiful views over Bassenthwaite & Skiddaw, pitches were generously sized and nicely spaced.

Really well located and easy to find following satnav. Relatively flat 6 mile walk into Cockermouth town centre.

Toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and well kept.

Didn’t use the games room or the clubhouse as I was travelling alone but these were a nice touch, as was the drying room.

Loved the chickens roaming free and the Valais Blacknose Sheep!

Great communication before, during and after my stay and a warm welcome upon arrival.

Unfortunately had to cut my trip short due to bad weather but I will definitely be back when the winds settle down!

Em va agradar It is hard to say how much we liked it—there was just so much to love! We landed on a spotless campsite with a stunning view over the lake and were warmly welcomed by our hosts and three brown chickens. What we absolutely loved the most was being offered shelter for our motorbikes and shown a drying room for our riding gear. No matter what the weather threw at us, we could stay warm and dry.

Em va agradar We absolutely loved our stay! The views are beautiful, and the facilities are fantastic. There’s a lovely, cosy indoor seating area, as well as a great games room with ping pong and pool tables — perfect for relaxing and keeping everyone entertained.
The toilets and showers were spotlessly clean and well maintained, which makes such a big difference when camping.
Overall, this has been the best campsite we’ve stayed at so far, and we would happily come back again. Highly recommended!

Em va agradar This has been our favourite campsite to date. From the warm welcome and tour of the facilities to the tales of cheeky weasels robbing the chicken eggs everything is just lovely. Nature on your doorstep,we watched the ospreys flying around from our tent porch. Stunning views of the lake and land. RAF planes zooming through the valley. Fantastic clean facilities, lovely games room, stone circle,tree house,sitting areas there really is something for everyone. Farmers are the hardest working people I know and it's a testament to the family that they still greet everyone with a smile and are happy to answer any questions you throw at them. We used the hot tub/pool twice during our stay and it's well worth the money. We absolutely loved our stay and can't wait to come back again.

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
