An autumn day looking over skiddaw
Wonderful views over bassenthwaite lake

  • Peaceful site on a farm five minutes' drive from Bassenthwaite
  • Spectacular views over Bassenthwaite Lake and Skiddaw
  • Distillery and wildlife park within a few minutes' drive
Let’s face it, if you’re off to the Lake District you’re likely to be looking for lots of chances to look at lakes. So put a big tick in that box for Irton House Farm, a peaceful place where watery views can be had without even leaving your pitch. And it’s not just any old lake that forms the backdrop here: you’ll be looking out over Bassenthwaite, one of the area’s largest and loveliest (and in a region of pretty stiff competition too). Being a farm site, you’ll share those views with the resident sheep and chickens, but around the sizeable site there's plenty of space to relax or to run about and play games. (Not outdoor-games weather? Retreat to the games room for pool and table tennis.) As scenic as that outlook is, you’ll not be wanting to limit yourself to just the one lake, so it’s handy that there are plenty more within easy reach. Buttermere, Derwentwater and Crummock Water are all within a half-hour drive, as is the Solway coast if you fancy a blast of sea air with your aquatic views. Getting out for a walk or a bike ride is pretty straightforward on local paths, and you can safely get all mucky knowing that a bike wash and free heated shower block await your return. Post-activity pubs and grub can be had five minutes away in Bassenthwaite or with a slightly longer drive to Cockermouth.

Paddock electric grass campervan or tent pitch

Liked Just spent four wonderful nights on my own, at Irton House Farm Campsite. A perfect site for peace and tranquility with magnificent views of Lake Bassenthwaite and the rolling hills. Lovely clean, private, shower rooms with great facilities including an efficient hot shower. A great base for walking/hiking and close to Keswick for shops, restaurants and boat trips on Derwent Water. There is a lakeside walk at Mirehouse and Gardens, across the road from Dodd Wood where you can buy tickets. Dodd Wood is a Forestry Comission wood with a steep climb to the summit. There is a lovely quaint pub called The Sun in the village of Bassenthwaite serving hot food. There's no local shop in the village but supermarkets are within easy driving distance. The site is very neat and tidy with the added provision of a fire pit for each pitch so you can sit and enjoy the lake view as the sun goes down. Last but not least I made friends with a very friendly chicken who regularly frequented my tent and made me smile :)

Disliked At first I wasnt keen on not having the car next to my tent as I usually use the car as storage but I got used to it and enjoyed not going back and forth to the car.

I missed having a hairdryer in the shower block but will take one with me next time.

Orchard electric grass tent pitch (two person)

Liked Great area, we stayed so that we could be relatively close to Buttermere and Keswick and it worked perfectly for us. The camp site was well organised, bathrooms clean with hot showers, 3 nights stay and we didn’t have to queue once. The space given to camp felt private and quiet, with added bonus of a family of stoats “dancing” for us during our morning coffees. The hosts were lovely and very accommodating when we were unexpectedly held up in traffic missing our check in time!

Disliked I’d suggest if possible a hairdryer in the shower rooms, as especially in the bad weather and colder evenings, I’d of liked to have washed my hair but I couldn’t as I couldn’t dry it.

Orchard electric grass tent pitch

Liked Impeccably clean, quiet, and peaceful. The views are absolutely out of this world!

Our host, Lindsay, was incredibly friendly—she showed us around the site and facilities, and even gave our 8-year-old boy some great recommendations to kickstart his hiking adventures. Everything was easy peasy.

Local attractions

It’s all about getting outdoors around here – there are walks galore through the area’s stunning scenery (not just lakes but also fells, forests and mountains). Routes are around for all abilities, from accessible ‘miles without stiles’ walks through to scrambles up Skiddaw (the 931-metre peak is 20 minutes’ drive from the farm). Put your boots aside for a while to favour other activities – head to Whinlatter Forest Park (20 minutes' drive) for mountain biking, Derwentwater (20 minutes) for kayaking and trout fishing, or Cockermouth Golf Club (10 minutes) for a round or two. If you’ve got the kids with you, you may like to take a trip to the Lake District Wildlife Park; if not, a dram at the Lakes Distillery or a tour of Jennings Castle Brewery may be on the cards. And of course it’s always worth making a point of visiting the Derwent Pencil Museum, 15 minutes away in Keswick.
