Camping at Cardewlees: Each pod has its own enclosed garden

General

  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away

For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a break – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw…

Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over…

The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is excellent for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other).

Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive.

Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The washing-up area is not in operation due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Campsite was in a level field containing both toilet and shower facilities with disabled and gender friendly labelling. Owners were warm and welcoming, offering everything from fire pits and wood to jacket potatos and lunches. I have to mention the scotch egg at this point, as it was the best we had ever tasted.

    Disliked:

The water pressure struggled when multiple showers were in use. The bags of wood were a little on the pricey side.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for you review.
I am pleased you liked the scotch egg 🤣🤣
Hope to see you again soon, you are welcome to bring your own wood next time x

Hi really nice site and in a great location only a short walk into Dalston where there is a railway station and a bus stop. There is also a great pub and local shops.

    Disliked:

Unfortunately they had a swarm of wasps although they were trying to find where about the nest was.

From the manager...

Thanks so much for your lovely review.
I am so sorry about the wasps, we had a pest control specialist out twice and they couldn't find a nest. They think it is just a really bad year for it 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️.
We have placed wasp traps along the fence lines of the site though and they seem to be helping.
Hope to see you again soon.

A great little family run campsite, we were made to feel at home as soon as we arrived. Very quiet site with lovely views of the mountains. Plenty of room to set up our home for the week.
Very impressed with how well the toilets and showers were looked after, they were always very clean and never a problem getting into them.
The site is based in a lovely little village with a coop just down the road to get supplies if needed as well as a great takeaway that offers amazing food!

Location was fair - quite hard to fins - we actually drove around for a good 20 minutes trying to find the site, need to do a loop around a main road to get back onto the road where the camp is.
At the time we were looking there was no answer on the given number so we stopped and asked directions in the farm next door! He was ok but did say it was a common question asked by people stopping at the camp.
Camp facilities clean, pitches were grass, EHU and water available along with waste emptying.

    Disliked:

Bit of a trek on foot to Dobbies, the nearest centre for a bit of shopping / food. No real control of the campers, kids kicking balls against van, not the sites problem but an issue for us.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback.
We are aware that there is an issue with the postcode but all bookings should receive a confirmation email with instructions and directions so we apologise if you did not receive it on this occasion.

We are always available by phone and more than happy to address issues with other campers. If I had been made aware of the situation I would have certainly resolved it as I appreciate how annoying balls being kicked at a caravan can be.

Ideal respite from city life03/08/2021

A really well maintained site, although its not a commercial site it is such a lovely setting with fields all around, some with horses, sheep and cows and a beautiful view of the stars on a clear night. Ideal to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The family running the site are very friendly and approachable. And I loved that you hire a fire pit too, we had ours on our final night and watched the sun set as we toasted our marshmallows, total bliss. The toilets and showers, although they are not your usual brick toilet block and are more portaloo style were still very well maintained and clean. I also liked that you had free reign to choose whichever pitch you liked.

    Disliked:

Not anything to dislike at all! although I do want to mention that we had a bit of a wasp infestation which I unfortunately found a bit stressful. But that's totally out of their control so not anything to knock off any stars but I just wanted to let them know!

From the manager...

This picture has got to be one of my favourite ever!!!
It is beautiful!!!
Thank you so much for all your lovely comments, the wasps situation has been sorted. Horrible things.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too.

To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below.

Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
