General

  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away

For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a hol – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw...

Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over...

The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is top for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other).

Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive.

Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

    Disliked:

The set up of the toilets plus the blockages everyday.
Also lack of communication regarding the pitches due to weather conditions.

From the manager...

Thanks for your feedback. Our facilities are basic but we try to represent this in our rates. Unfortunately we are not on mains sewerage and excessive use of toilet paper can sometimes cause a blockage. We are always available and onsite so if there are any issues we are only a phone call away.
In regards to the condition of the pitches we have experienced severe weather conditions in Cumbria and the ground is wet, however we opened the field adjacent to the main camping field in order to deal with this issue. I am sorry if this was not communicated too you.

Quiet, close by village, close to main roads.

    Disliked:

Shower/toilet left a lot to be desired, there were hundreds of flies in the shower which I had to use fly spray before I could go in. There is no light in the shower and it was not clean, there was left over shampoo’s, conditioner’s and shower gels left on the windowsill along with a clothe that was dried up and had been left there covered in cobwebs and dead flies.
The grass was too long in the fields, there was a porta loo in one of the fields that was in a very bad state.
The washing up area is just a sink with no hot water, out in the open next to the recycling bins and toilet waste.
Very poor signage we drove past it 3 times before we found it.

From the manager...

i am so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay. The toilets are cleaned twice a day morning and evening and there is a sign with contact details asking campers to call us if they are unhappy with the cleanliness. Unfortunately although we make every effort to keep the facilities clean we are not able to account for the condition they are left in by other campers.
Cumbria has experienced an extreme amount of rain in August and the grass is certainly not our desire length, however as we cut the field with heavy machinery we made a decision to leave it longer rather than risk churning it up as the ground is soft.
I believe the porta-loo you are making reference too was in the adjacent field to the campsite and was not intended for use by campers or indeed was even in the camping field.
We have had a few suggestions about placing a cover over the washing up area and this is certainly something we will be doing.
Apologies about the lack of signage, there is one at the end of the lonning and google maps should bring you straight to the field.

The potential of this site is amazing! The location is fantastic. So close to Carlisle with all its attractions, but you would never know it. Cardewlees is a rural idyll. The camping field is on top of a hill overlooking the most incredible views of rolling hills and mountains in the distance. There is plenty to explore. Even a surprise lake hidden to one side. (the lakes themselves are only half an hour away) My children loved the animals and the owners are very kind and welcoming and happy to introduce the kids to the animals. I am afraid they really are going to have to sort out their washing and toilet facilities before the next season. Although the saving grace is that the one shower is very good with a lovely view out of the window 😁
I would happily pay more for improved toilet and shower facilities xx

Ahh thank you for your kind words.
Improving our facilities is the next priority, we want to stay affordable with one fixed rate so we weren't in a position to invest as much as we would have liked in the toilet block. However due to the success off our first year we can do this for next season without passing the cost on to you guys.
Hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too.

To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below.

Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
