Pitches at the site

  • Family-run site with scenic views across farmland and fells
  • A 15-minute drive to the city of Carlisle and 30 to the Lake District
  • Supermarkets, restaurants and a swimming pool a 25-minute walk away
For views of fells, farmland and fields make Camping at Cardewlees your next base for a break – this family-run site looks out over splendid Lake District scenery including Carrock Flat Top, High Pike and Skiddaw… Whether you plan on having hardy hikes or gentle jaunts over the hills, they’re easy to reach as the park is about a 30-minute drive from the northern end of the Lakes. It’s also a 25-minute walk to the small but perfectly formed village of Dalston if you’re not wanting to amble far for a supermarket and restaurants, and as the community’s a regular Cumbria in Bloom winner there are sure to be a fair few flower displays to ooh and ahh over… The village’s play areas and public swimming pool mean you might even be able to tempt kids along for a wander too – the river setting is excellent for rambling. The Cumbria Way ends at Carlisle and runs through Dalston, so you could join the 70-mile long-distance trail here (or just stop off for a stay at Camping at Cardewlees during an epic walk from one side to the other). Cycle paths are also strewn through the local landscapes for long or short rides. Before you head off for the day, fill up on breakfast prepped by the site’s owners; just check it’s available when you arrive. Amenities include a shower and regularly cleaned unisex toilets.

Enclosed fully-serviced concrete slab site (hot tub)

Liked Toilets basic but clean

Disliked Stayed on the camper pitch with hot tub ....this pitch feels like an after thought. On arrival we were given 1 basket of logs which is just about enough to heat the tub up . If you want more logs there £10 per basket, I've stay on other sites with hot tubs and never paid extra for logs all in with the pitch fee. You only find out there are extra charges after paying on pitch up . Some extras are over the top £30 to have the hot tub on for when you arrive, the most I've paid is £10 . When you get out of the hot tub you are straight on to gravel would have been nice to have a bit of decking there .under the steps to get into the hot tub is a standard extension lead .... not good near water !
On pitch up it says there is a fire pit and picnic bench at the pitch it's not really at the pitch as its on a field next to the pitch with a fence round .
I know this is a farm but the flies were awful
We booked for 2 nights but only stayed the one .

From the manager: Thanks for you review.
Our pricing is competitive with other such pitches in the area and once the hot tub is hot, it holds its heat for at least 24 hours.
The field you mention is actually the enclosed garden that comes with the hot tub pitch and all this is clearly shown in the pictures on Pitchup. Other guests have loved having this space.
I don't think the flies have anything to do with it being a farm and more to do with the time of year.
I emailed you to see if you were ok as we noticed you hadn't returned, yet you chose not to raise any of this. I am sorry the privacy, huge amount of space and beautiful scenery were not for you whilst you sat in the hot tub.

The Paddock unpowered grass tent site

Liked A quiet, rural setting that offered a real escape from the hustle and bustle.

Surrounded by open fields with stunning countryside scenery, perfect for unwinding.

Welcoming and helpful without being intrusive.

Clean facilities and tidy pitches; it’s clear the place is looked after with care.

Handy base for visiting the Lake District or nearby towns like Carlisle.

Disliked Slightly more signage on arrival would make it easier to find.

Some minor improvements to amenities

Enclosed fully-serviced concrete slab site (hot tub)

Liked Stayed in the fully serviced hot tub pitch with enclosed garden. Brilliant pitch, very friendly. Toilet and shower very close by. Some hooks near the hot tub would be good 😁

Disliked No dishwashing facilities near the pitch, have to use tent field.

High Pike camping pod (three person)

Liked Enclosed garden area for dog. Pod was massive with kitchen facilities, hot water, beds. Decking area. Walk to neighbouring village. Showers and toilets clean.

Disliked Not much to do, so had to keep the child entertained. But not a bad thing really. Enjoyed the peace.

Powered grass site

Liked Location was ideal for our purposes
Owners are very friendly

Disliked Facilities were not operational bit of a building site around toilet shower areas

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thanks for your review.
The men’s toilet on the main site is fully operational and cleaned daily but as the sign says on the ladies door we are either asking campers to use the unisex toilet or the toilets by the pods.
I appreciate that there is some mess that occurs with renovation by the toilets but I’m not sure how you can class the facilities that were open as not clean. I cleaned them myself Monday morning when you arrived and again this morning when you left.

Local attractions

If you’re keen on history, you could be learning about Carlisle’s in a jiffy – it’s a 15-minute drive from Camping at Cardewlees. The Great Border City also has a castle where Mary Queen of Scots spent a stint behind bars and a cathedral that was founded in 1133. For a flutter on the horses, a racecourse serves the local area too. To go further back in time – think close to 2,000 years – Hadrian’s Wall, the most visited Roman ruin in the whole of Britain, is a 40-minute drive from the site. The Walltown Crags section’s a stellar place to start your journey to a couple of millennia ago: this stretch of the original wall has eye-popping views over the patchwork of fields below. Not tired out after your epic journey along the Cumbria Way? Set off along the 84-mile Hadrian’s Wall Path, which runs from one side of England's coast to the other.
