  • A site in the wooded grounds of a youth hostel with fell, lake views
  • A 15-minute walk to Lake Buttermere and 20 to Crummock Water
  • Self-catering kitchen, café-bar, restaurant, living room and library
Lounge in the Lake District at YHA Buttermere, where you’ll pitch up in this youth hostel’s grounds on wooden platforms set inside a tree-lined area with lovely views of Lake Buttermere and Cumbria’s lofty peaks just outside... When not wandering (lonely as a cloud, as Lake District lover Wordsworth might poetically spout) in all this nature, access to the facilities in the hostel – from the self-catering kitchen to the café-bar and restaurant – mean you’re bound to stay comfortable. The drying room will come in handy (in case you fall fully clothed into one of the lakes or it rains while on walks) and a key code means entering the youth hostel’s historical building is easy even when the receptionists have packed up and gone home. If you fancy heading back out and about, roams can be had straight from the grounds – the famed Haystacks trail is just one available – and gentle jaunts around Buttermere and Crummock Water (the banks of either are a 15- and 20-minute walk away, respectively) are also top ways to while away the time. If you’re one for wild swimming, (bracing) dips are also to be had in both. Or does sitting in the saddle suit you better? Rides to the scenic Loweswater Fells take 25 minutes from YHA Buttermere; pedal your way back to the park later on for a beer from the licensed bar and a board game tournament in the living room...

Local attractions

Saunter over to Crummock South Beach for lazy paddles at this lakeside sunbathing spot 20 minutes’ walk away or have a harder hike through the sprawling greenery of the popular Cat Bells fell (around the same distance). Instead of heading upwards for views of Lakeland, trips to Honister Slate Mine will get you going underground on educational tours (10 minutes’ drive) in England’s last working slate mine, while the Castlerigg Stone Circle is an equally historical – not to mention atmospheric – hotspot similar to a mini Stonehenge (half an hour away). Up for an authentic Cumbrian ale after all that learning? Jennings Brewery Shop (plus tours) is 25 minutes’ drive – try not to sup too much though as you may want to carry on towards other top sights such as Wordsworth House and Garden afterwards, the Georgian home where the Romantic poet was born, 30 minutes from the park. To see the abode of another famed Lake District resident, author Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top farmhouse is an hour and 15 minutes’ drive.
