Moss Side Farm Campsite: Amazing views

General

  • Small, quiet site on a working farm with scenic views
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful Lake District site; no music, groups, ball games or under-12s

Moss Side Farm Campsite, near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness, should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, 10 minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea…

This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with sheep, cows, ponies, ducks and hens. Two ladies' and two gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities, and campfires are permitted.

Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness, a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, plus a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop.

Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site. No music or radios may be used at this peaceful site, and groups, ball games and kids under 12 are not allowed.

    Very friendly welcome
    Lovely spot
    Site not too big
    Variety of pitching areas
    Nice and peaceful
    Other campers were friendly

    Disliked:

The showers were weak and cold
The water flow in the sinks was weak and intermittent.
The drinking water ran out on one of the days.
It would be good to have more sinks and toilets, and a much better water system.

From the manager...

Sorry about the water. Because these rural areas are not on the Mains Water System we rely on fresh water springs to supply our wonderfully clear fresh water. However, because we were in drought conditions, no rain for aprox 6 weeks, our water was indeed not as gushing as usual. No doubt the rain will be with us again in the Lakes very soon. Louise

Enjoyed a peaceful two night stay at Moss Side. It’s a super location with great views, walks and choice of places to pitch.

We loved the site’s no music policy, friendly farm animals, the (very handsome) rooster crowing for morning, and happy doggos wandering around. The site facilities are basic but provide everything you need. Farm host was amazing; helpful and friendly.

Walking guides are provided for guests and the nearby village of Broughton is an absolute gem with lovely little local pubs and shops including a great butchers, good eating and a quaint little antique shop. Have a chat with the shop owner about the old clock workings accessible from inside the shop, we were shown the mechanism dating from 1766.

    Disliked:

The washbasins in the toilets had no hot water, the isolation valves were turned off.
It is essential to have hot water for hand washing after using the toilet. Even more so in these times whilst still in a pandemic
Showers had no privacy and no facility to hang clothes or towels.

Lovely campsite, the owners are lovely & friendly.
Good selection of areas to choose where to pitch. Freezer is really helpful. Amazing views, great chill out area in the shade where you can charge your phone. Fire pits were very useful. Loved how there was only a few children there.
Amazing how it was so quite!

    Disliked:

Could have done with more toilets as 2 woman’s toilets for the whole campsite is tricky. Maybe you could convert the back space of the toilets to another one? - Toilets we’re always very clean.

Only 2 showers for women again. The showers are difficult to use when everyone is in them, the water pressure drops to the point that you have to push yourself up against the wall. We are aware that you have to source your own water.- The water heat itself was perfect.

The mens showers had the same issues.

It would be great if the showers could get updated so the pressure was improved or you could adjust the head to have it lower. Maybe have that 3rd shower block converted to have a shower in?

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction.

If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive.

Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth.

The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans.

The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.
