General

  • Family-friendly site on a working farm with dogs and farm animals
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Less than 10 minutes' drive from Broughton-in-Furness

Moss Side Farm near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, ten minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea...

This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with sheep, cows, ponies, ducks and hens. Two ladies' and two gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities.

Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop.

Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

Lovely campsite. Nice and quiet. Around a 30-40 minute walk ... 22/10/2017

Lovely campsite. Nice and quiet. Around a 30-40 minute walk to the village.
The cabins didn't have electricity but they have a wood burner in to keep you nice and warm. Can buy wood and fire lighters from the campsite for a good price.
There are shower, toilet and washing up facilities where they do have electricity. There are fridges, freezers, toaster and kettle for campers to use.
Will need to take own lights and cooking facilities and own bedding.
If you're looking for luxury this wouldn't be the place for you. If you're looking to get back to nature this is a great place to stop! Owners were lovely and helpful

    Would stop there again!

    Disliked:

Would be nice to have an option with some of the cabins to have electricity.
Showers to be a bit more private
The door on the cabin we stopped in did have a a gap at the top so there was quite a bit of wind coming in and wasn't very secure.

The relaxed and friendly welcome of the owner.
Great site for a peaceful couple of days. Help wherever needed but left in peace and quiet. Railway cabins have great new wood burners to keep us toastie and warm. Great to have seats outside and fire pits to have an atmostpheric evening.
New kitchen area good with extra feature, kettle, toaster and a table to sit at if the weather had been bad which it wasn't.
Great information about local walks, although our dog had a bad leg and couldn't walk far.
Our daughter and grandson came to visit while we were on site and made very welcome to join us during the day.

Quirky little cabin. Site was not too busy, plenty of space. Only downside was our dog did not like it, the little farm dogs are lovely and very friendly and are allowed to roam around much to the distress of our own dog whom was not allowed to roam free which unfortunately made him aggressive (jealousy I suppose)........ Toilets clean and tidy, constantly replenished with paper and liquid soap. Showers clean.

Great little relaxing place with plenty of walks.

Very relaxed and friendly campsite small campsite. Great views from where we pitched. Kids loved the fire pit and the farm dogs! Super friendly and helpful owners made us feel very welcome. Perfect location as a base for walking in the southern Lakes. Showers/toilets quite basic, but perfectly adequate. We would definitely stay there again.

Directions

Our nearest train station is Foxfield while our nearest bus drop off point is Broughton-in-Furness. If anyone wishes to be collected and or dropped off at either of these points please let us know.

From the M6 take the exit signposted Crooklands and continue on the A590 up to Greenodd. Drive on the A5092 for about 6 miles. Take the A595 for two miles, then make a sharp right turn. The farm is down this road on the left.

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction.

If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive.

Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth.

The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans.

The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.

Must see

  • Lakeland Motor Museum (8.2 miles)
  • South Lakes Wild Animal Park (8.7 miles)
  • Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside (9.2 miles)
