General

  • Family-friendly site on a working farm with scenic views
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful Lake District site - no parties or groups

Moss Side Farm near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, 10 minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea...

This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with sheep, cows, ponies, ducks and hens. Two ladies' and two gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities.

Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop.

Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

Please note

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Very Quaint and exactly what we were looking for. The cabin was far more spacious than i expected and the log stove was easy to get going. The host and all of her family were incredibly helpful. Bathrooms were very clean. It was great being so close to all the animals and the farm has some very friendly dogs who just wanted to stay by our side as much as possible. Loads of information on local walks and pubs was provided.

    Disliked:

The single hanging light in the cabin did not create much light at all (we think it may have been running out of battery) so we fully suggest that people bring torches (one head torch made it a lot brighter).

The Rail Camping Pod was excellent, and even in the wind and rain, the stove enabled us to keep warm and cosy. The facilities were close by and spotlessly clean. And the information on walks etc in the wash-pot room was very useful. The owners hand their dogs) were all very friendly and welcoming. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Set in the most beautiful surroundings, these quaint little glamping pods are ideal for a relaxing getaway. The owners were very welcoming and only a short walk away if there was anything we needed. We were very unfortunate to be visiting in possibly the worst downfall this month, but it didn't stop us from thoroughly enjoying a mini trip. Amazing memories, just a shame about the weather. This would be perfect in the spring time, I will definitely be returning.

    Disliked:

Due to the heavy rain , we did experience a little leak in the pod, however we are used to camping and so it didn't bother us too much.

Loved the old cargo wagon (train carriage) converted into a cabin. We slept nicely as storm Ciara passed through during the night. It was quite cosy with the wood burning stove inside. I like the fact it's a real farm, with real smells and noises!
    The owners are really friendly.
Sign-posts to the campsite are clear and in the right place, which isn't something you often get. Whoever paints the letters on their wooden signs is really good.

    Disliked:

Only mention these as observations, I'm not necessarily saying I disliked anything:
Bunk bed needs a ladder to get up/down
Door needs better method of holding shut (rope and metal hoops don't quite work)
Electric socket would be useful to charge phone etc (I'm aware there's a socket in the kitchen area).
I'm not sure if I parked in the right area (next to toilet block) but I didn't realise there was a drainage outlet on the wall of the large shed (cattle ?) and it made the ground a bit muddy. I wasn't too bothered as I'm aware this is a working farm, but some people might not like stepping in that.
Last thing to mention, about 5 minutes after I came back from the toilet with my kids, a car sped past very quickly, presumably going to the owner's house. Maybe something is needed to slow traffic down.

By far the best site we have stayed on, from turning up the signs were very clear. Owner off site when we arrived but left contact number, answered straight away and gave us a choice of pitches. We pitched and admired the amazing scenery and spectacular views. Louise (owner) came straight over to say hello, so friendly and welcoming. Facilities were great, toilets & showers clean in a converted barn. Also a communal area with hot water for dish washing, kettle, toaster & microwave to use. Lots of thought put into signs in communal area for local amenities and walks. We especially enjoyed our visits from the farm dogs and watching the chickens.
Definitely plan to visit here from Scotland again.

This is a lovely, small, remote farm campsite. Our kids loved the train carriage camping pods and the log burner inside ensured they stayed lovely and warm, even during a chilly October weekend. The toilets and washroom are really nice and the lady who runs the camping on the farm was lovely. They sell logs for a very reasonable price for both the log burners and fire pits and there are lovely views from the site.

It was great for the kids just to explore the farm and run around in the open space. It's also not far from Coniston and Tarn Hows etc.

If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive.

Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth.

The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans.

The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.
