General

  • Family-friendly site on a working farm with scenic views
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful site - no parties or groups

Moss Side Farm near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, ten minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea...

This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with sheep, cows, ponies, ducks and hens. Two ladies' and two gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities.

Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop.

Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

Had a wonderful time staying in the bunk room with my 8year old and a few of his friends for his birthday. Just perfect! Snug bunk room with log burner, kettle, microwave and comfy beds. Boys loved exploring the outside areas, and had a fab time making a camp fire. Couldn't fault it. Will definitely be back again soon

We stayed here mid week when the site was empty, what a lovely place. The owners are very friendly and helpful, the site is clean, tidy and well kept with beautiful views over the country side and a scenic walk into the local town. The site has male and female blocks each with two toilets and two showers with toilet paper. Also provided is a washroom with a sink, recycling bins, plug sockets, toaster , a freezer and 2 fridges. There is a fire pit outside of the cabin and a log burner in the cabin with wood supplied at £4 a big bag. The cabin beds and chairs were comfortable. The owners have free roaming dogs which are very friendly, chickens and ducks which made it more interesting for the kids. We were allowed to explore the woods next to the site and build a den with wood etc which had fallen.
Over all a great stay, we will be coming back with family very soon.

We slept in a rail pod which was bigger than expected and very clean. Excellent locacation to get out and about explore the lakes or simiply to walk to the local village. I would definitely return

Directions

Our nearest train station is Foxfield while our nearest bus drop off point is Broughton-in-Furness. If anyone wishes to be collected and or dropped off at either of these points please let us know.

From the M6 take the exit signposted Crooklands and continue on the A590 up to Greenodd. Drive on the A5092 for about 6 miles. Take the A595 for two miles, then make a sharp right turn. The farm is down this road on the left.

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction.

If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive.

Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth.

The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans.

The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.

Must see

  • Lakeland Motor Museum (8.2 miles)
  • South Lakes Wild Animal Park (8.7 miles)
  • Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside (9.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Gondola' (6.7 miles)
  • Coniston and Tarn Hows (7.7 miles)
