General

  • Family-friendly site on a working farm with scenic views
  • Woodland valley with walks, bike rides and riding trails all around
  • Peaceful Lake District site - no parties or groups

Moss Side Farm near Cumbria's Broughton-in-Furness should hit the spot for hikers: it's in a woodland valley with many footpaths leading directly from the farm. And for watery types too, as the farm is in the Lake District, 10 minutes' drive from the nearest lake and 40 from Windermere. And for cyclists, and horse riders, and those who like smashing views of lakeland fells leading down to the Irish Sea...

This is a small, friendly and family-run site on a working hill farm with working dogs along with sheep, cows, ponies, ducks and hens. Two ladies' and two gents' showers, a freezer and a washing-up area are among the site amenities.

Moss Farm's nearest village is Broughton-in-Furness a seven-minute drive or 30 or so minute walk away; here guests can buy bread from the award-winning Broughton bakery and groceries and meat from a family-run butcher and grocer. The village also has three pubs, two of which serve food, a restaurant, two cafés, a petrol station, a post office, a bank and a gift shop.

Quiet well-behaved dogs are welcome at Moss Farm as long as they're kept on leads while on site.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Your dog must be tattooed or microchipped.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Amazing site, the best one we have ever been to09/17/2020

Everything! Lots of animals including 3 little dogs who would come searching for bacon in the morning. Facilities clean and everything you need available. In the evening someone would come round on a quad bike selling firewood and snacks for the fire pits on each pitch. Big expensive site meant people could spread out so it was very quiet at night. Beautiful location and lovely host. Our favourite campsite ever and we will be back!

Absolutely brilliant, the railway carriages are so good, loads of room, clean, and well thought out, double bed one side, bunk on the other with a log burner in the middle ..with the log burner on it soon gets warm. Amazing views on a working farm, a couple of pigs, loads of hens and some adorable dogs. Logs and kindling , fire lighters are available to buy on site, although it took me a a good hour to get the log burner lit, my god it was warm! Lighting one isn’t easy if you’ve not done it before, I googled it... it’s not just shove a log in and some firelighters, there is a way.. deffo worth the wait tho. The showers, Loos, kitchen, all clean, and functional and plenty of hot water. Definitely booking again, it’s a 30 min tops drive from Coniston, so it’s not to in the sticks. Can’t wait for next visit! 10/10 Thanks for a great stay!!!

Everything about this place was amazing. The site itself is gorgeous with spectacular views. Had all the amenities we needed (showers and a room for washing up) Louise was super helpful with providing us with additional items we'd forgotten (toothpaste!) We adored the animals and that we could have an open camp fire in the evening, being able to buy firewood and kindling from the owners. We will definitely be back.

Absolutely amazing place. Proper traditional farm. Chicken, duck, pigs, and the 3 farm dogs who would come and visit you on their rounds. Louise the owner was so friendly and nothing was too much. The views are exceptionally good. Watching the farmer doing his morning routines in the distance with a good cup of coffee. Its the life. Will def be returning.

Directions

Please note: All distances on this page are calculated "as the crow flies" - please check actual distance depending on your mode of travel using the Get directions button above.

Local attractions

Of the many footpaths straight from the farm, the main one is the Foxfield to Broughton route along a disused railway line right into Broughton. Other paths can take you to the Broughton Mills area, Seathwaite valley and Ulpha valley; ask the Moss Farm team to point you in the right direction.

If you're in the area for watersports, Coniston Lake, the third biggest in the Lake District, is the closest to the farm and is 10 minutes' drive away. Otherwise try pony trekking at Spoon Hall near Coniston, Muirthwaite Green at Silecroft or Cumbrian Heavy Horses in the Whicham Valley, all within 15 minutes' drive.

Historic house fans have many in the area to pick from, like Muncaster Castle, Sizer Castle, Holker Hall and Levens Hall, as well as many National Trust houses such as Dove House in Grasmere, home of daffs man William Wordsworth.

The towns of Windermere and Ambleside are about 20 minutes' drive away, as is South Lakes Animal Park at Dalton-in-Furness, an attractive option for animal fans.

The staff at the Broughton-in-Furness tourist information centre can give you tips on what's best to see and do.

Must see

  • Lakeland Motor Museum (13.2 kilometers)
  • South Lakes Wild Animal Park (14.1 kilometers)
  • Windermere Lake Cruises, Lakeside (14.8 kilometers)
