Brackenber Moor Caravan Site: Footpath

General

  • Small and scenic caravan site on Appleby Golf Club in Cumbria
  • A 15-minute drive to the North Pennines; 25 minutes to Lake District
  • On a moorland golf course; pubs and shops five minutes’ drive away

A small and simple site with one very big USP, Brackenber Moor Caravan Site is bang in the middle of Appleby Golf Club, just off the A66. This moorland course was designed by Open Champion Willie Fernie in 1903, and it offers challenges for all levels of player – please note that the site is not part of the golf club, so you’ll need to book separately if you want to play a round.

Taking a break at Brackenber is as close to wild camping as you can get in a caravan; the minimal on-site facilities include mains water and a chemical toilet disposal facility. But hey, chances are you’ll either be or out and about exploring the area or teeing off on that golf course.

Dogs are welcome too, but due to the particular nature of the site, with flocks of free-roaming sheep around, they'll need to be kept on leads at all times.

Sitting on the Eden river, Appleby-in-Westmorland is a great place to visit any time of year, with a medieval castle and Georgian-era architecture. A nose around will turn up plenty of pubs and restaurants if you fancy a change of scenery, or handy shops for picking up supplies if you’re going down the self-catering line.

Loved the Location! The simpleness of the site means that it does not intrude at all on the natural scenery. Beautiful views all around. Yes, the tarn you see on the campsite's pics is actually right by the site so you have views right over it.

    Disliked:

This is being really fussy as the positives outweighed the negatives by millions. It's unobtrusiveness made it difficult to find as we were first to arrive. Could do without the hose on the drinking water tap. This made it very difficult to use without the hose dangling in your water container, which given the sheep around was likely unhygenic. Oh, and it's not close enough to where I live for me to visit often!! That's a real down side.

Loved the wildness of the site. Beautiful walks all around.
The view was unspoilt and the small lake was a real treat to look at.
The night time was beautiful and the sky was full of stars.
The option to pitch up wherever you wanted was ideal and allowed for a large amount of space between pitches.
Great if you love being wild

Beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife around

    Disliked:

The ground was quite boggy and there was a lot of dog poo around that people hadnt picked up! Be mindful that there are no proper tracks on the site itself, you can park up anywhere you like but we had to be very careful in our van due to the bumpy ness of the ground. Will defo need ramps also as no real flat areas.

A lovely basic site not far off the A66, nice and quiet. You will need to be self-sufficient as there is no toilet block or showers. The site is open grazing land with Sheep wandering about and they are not fussy about where they poo, so if you want a site with immaculate bowling green type pitches, electric hook-up, clubhouse etc then this is not for you, however, we loved it just for its simplicity.
