Bankwood Farm: Enjoy views covering Pennines, Lake District and Yorkshire Dales

General

  • Wild-style camping for small groups on a family-run farm
  • A 10-minute drive to Appleby-in-Westmorland; Pooley Bridge 40 minutes
  • Exclusive use of the site; spectacular views of the Upper Eden Valley

Welcome to wild(ish) camping at Bankwood Farm, a spectacular rural site with few creature comforts in Cumbria’s Upper Eden Valley. Set at the foot of the Pennines, this site offers guests an exclusive-use spacious field to disconnect completely from work, technology overload or just the routine of daily life.

Far-reaching views stretch out over the Pennines, fells and all the way down to the Lake District (which can also be reached for day trips in about 40 minutes), and you can head out for hikes to the likes of Murton Pike and High Cup Nick from the farm.

Wildlife is truly abundant here: look out for red squirrels, barn owls, curlews, lapwings and (if you're particularly lucky) otters. This working farm specialises in sheep and cattle, and the owners will be happy to show you around if they have a spare moment. Farm-produced food like sausages and eggs is also available for breakfast.

How do stays here differ from wild camping? Well, there's a proper toilet with hot water and a water refill point located a short walk from the pitches, with rubbish disposal also taken care of on site. A charging point is also available.

Coming here without a car? The farmers can pick you up from the nearest station in Appleby-in-Westmorland (five miles from base) or the Pennine Way by arrangement.

Please note that the field isn't totally flat and has limited level space. If this is a concern for you, the site recommends limiting the number of tents you bring to two.

Please note

We stayed in the shack and it was everything we hoped for and more. Gemma was lovely and so helpful, even suggested a lovely pub for a birthday meal which went down a treat! The farms produce was amazing, the area itself is quiet and very scenic. We could not have felt more welcome by Gemma and she made every effort to make sure we were happy and comfortable and we could ask her for absolutely anything we needed (not that we did need anything more than we already had from her) we will 10000% be back to bankwood and can’t wait to share this beautiful place with more of our friend. Thanks again Gemma for everything.

A hidden treasure! A beautiful pitch on a well maintained farm.
Everything was perfect, the site was clean and well kept. An honesty shop was a brilliant added touch and the ice pops a huge hit with the kids!
The owners and their children were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. They found time in there busy day to allow my children to see there animals which made there weekend.

Was lovely to be able to have a fire of an evening and enjoy the scenery.

Very peaceful, relaxing and enjoyable time was had. Thank you!!

The site instantly made you feel at ease and welcome. The hospitality was amazing from start to finish. The exclusive pitch allowed us to feel safe and the children could really explore (they loved the stream). The facilities (toliet and shower) were well kept and clean. The charging point was a great bonus 👌 The pitch was huge, not all flat but more then enough space for your tent. We couldn't hear the other guests at all. The only sounds were sheep, chickens and a owl on the night time (blissful). Thank you. We didn't want to leave. Would love to return.

From the moment we arrived, saw the scenery and spotted the chandeliers this place was for us!!
We love camping but hate having someone in the next tent with their tv blaring! We staying in The Shack and as you look out over the fields to see nothing but green and not another soul it’s just bliss!
The honesty box with eggs, sausages, burgers, ice pops for the kids was a lovely addition.
There were fledgling swallows in shack and red squirrels running around.
Our children (4&8) had the time of their lives running around and exploring.
The shack itself has lots of additions making it a glancing type trip! Toilet, shower, fridge freezer, cupboards, sink hot water. 3 picnic benches dotted around as well.
Great location to explore and Gemma and Trevor the owners (as well as their lovely children) were excellent hosts. We’re already planning to return in 2023 and hopefully for many years to come.

First of all the hospitality was amazing - thank you so much. The pitch is huge and next to and overlooked by fields of sheep which was lovely. It’s on a working farm. Shower and toilet all well maintained. Fresh eggs and other produce available onsite. We were a group of dads and sons and we all had our best camping experience here. There’s even a stream at the bottom of the pitch to keep your milk/beer cold! Loads of walks nearby.

Incredibly attentive and welcoming hosts! - Due to a techincal error on the booking site our first night coincided with the last night of a booking.

But Gemma was quick to give me a call and offer me the alternative pitch and even gave us access to their own home ameneties (fridge/freezer) as we didn't have access to the pitch for 1 night.

They assisted us in moving pitches after the first night (which was In their beautiful west-facing field - great for sunsets) and into their second pitch with barn and electricity.

A very wet attempt of scafell pike left us sodden and Gemma so kindly offered to dry our clothes and boots by the fire in their home!

Couldn't fault the service, the farm tour (we got to give the piggies a scratch) - the location is stunning and the fresh farm produce were greatly enjoyed too!

Top marks - great site - great hosts!

We will be back next year! :)

Wonderful owners who were very helpful and welcoming. Gemma made you feel more like a visiting friend than a customer and was always on hand if we needed anything. The site itself is completely private and remote but with good access links to the local towns and villages. Lots of beautiful walks and great places to visit locally. The camp site area was beautiful with the stream and we loved watching all of the farm animals in the fields around us. Lots of wildlife here which was great and a wonderful view of the sunset every night. Can't recommend here enough!
