Heaton House Farm: Scenic views

General

  • Touring pitches on a small farm-style site in rural Cheshire
  • On the edge of the Peak District, a 10-minute drive from Leek
  • Half an hour from Buxton, Stoke-on-Trent and Alton Towers

Scouring the web for a serene space to spend a few nights away in your caravan or motorhome? Hightail it to Heaton House Farm for a stint in stunning countryside on the edge of the Peak District National Park. This site is set amid 165 acres of grounds with views across the lovely landscapes of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire from grass pitches that have been reinforced with strong subterranean mesh so they'll be nice and sturdy under your wheels.

There’s much to do around this gorgeous getaway spot in Rushton Spencer, including taking walks by Rudyard Lake (10 minutes’ drive) and across the rocky ridge of The Roaches (20 minutes).

For an adrenaline rush, head to Alton Towers theme park (half an hour) or stay closer by at the Madrenaline Activity Centre (15 minutes’ walk) for archery, skybowing, axe throwing, Segway racing and – perhaps the highlight – rolling down a hill in a sphere.

The park is also half an hour’s drive from Buxton to the north and Stoke-on-Trent to the south. Pubs and restaurants aplenty are a cinch to source for eats within a six-mile radius, including in the market town of Leek (10 minutes).

Toilets and showers are available, and there are water and Elsan points for use. Please note that this site operates a wedding venue, so there may be some noise from guests leaving events.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that this site operates a wedding venue and therefore there may be some noise from guests leaving events.

A standard campsite with a luxury price.07/08/2022

The site is located in a great area for walking and exploring the local countryside and not far from Leek town.

The facilities are pretty good, there is only 1 shower but it doesn't seem to get busy enough for this to be much of a problem.

    Disliked:

The biggest disappointment about this site is the price & we were expecting much more upon our arrival, but it really is a grass pitch with pretty standard facilities.

The general noise from the weddings isn't that bad, but the coming and going of staff and wedding vendors all day can become quite annoying, we had 3 days of constant weddings and were glad to leave when we did.

The overall feeling once we left was that it didn't feel like a campsite.

From the manager...

Hi Richard, Thank you for your feedback. I have already messaged asking you to send me an email about how we can improve our facilities, but I have not yet received a reply.

We clearly display our prices and facilities on PitchUp so I am not quite sure what you were expecting. There are other cheaper sites available on PitchUp that you could have booked.

This was the last weekend of postponed weddings due to COVID, and now we are back at a more manageable level. The no-parking cones stopping from cars going too far onto the campsite had been removed, so I put them back in place and this was resolved during your stay.

We've really enjoyed you documenting your stay on Twitter, it's a shame you haven't posted some of the beautiful photos you have taken during your stay here with your review too.

Thanks, Sarah

Good size Level pitches , well maintained site nice fresh clean facilities ! Some great walks with rudyard not too far.

This site is perfect for Active people who want to cycle , walk , paddlebord kayak or fish 🎣 or explore the area , Leek is not far 8min to big supermarket sainsburys which have Argos too so if you forgot anything camping wise 👍🏼👍🏼

There were 2 weddings during our stay , music was not overly loud and ended midnight both events , rather enjoyable to sit out and watch the sun go down and have a beer 🍺 listening to the entertainment at a distance .
Me and my 6 year old had a cheeky dance in the car park was quite a memorable experience.

Will be making more bookings with this site ,
Bringing my kayak, paddlebord, rod , dog . And possibly my falcon or hawk (if site will allow me)

Definitely somewhere worth staying for an Adventure. There’s lots to do and see if you venture out.

Self check in easy , all very self explanatory. Spoke with 2 staff during my stay , only in passing all were very polite asking if I was enjoying my stay .

Fantastic weekend and will definitely be returning !

Thankyou and job well done 👏 great site !

    Disliked:

Nothing personally … although worth a mention as I like to write honestly .

No red carpet welcome to your pitch /interaction with site owners .
( Follow instructions on email, pull up , pitch up enjoy your stay , ring number or visit office if you have issues) I LIKE THIS APPROACH SIMPLE AND EFFECTIVE 🙌🏻

PARTY 🎉 It’s a wedding venue ! Expect a party 🎈Not massively loud but if you like being in bed falling asleep
To the birds on a summer evening, you may have to share with some ABBA …. Till at least 11:30pm , Everything was silent by midnight .
AGAIN SOMETHING I PERSONALLY FOUND GREAT AND ADDED TO OUR EXPERIENCE 😎

From the manager...

Wow! What an incredible review - thank you so much. The fact that you and your daughter had a memorable dance fills our hearts!

We try and keep things simple, and give people more information upfront in case we are unable to be available for their arrival, so pleased that you like this approach!

We would love to welcome you all back, along with your falcon/hawk!

Kind regards, Sarah

Local attractions

When pottering around the Peak District, don’t miss the postcard-pretty villages. Leek (10 minutes’ drive) is a first-rate spot to kick off explores – as its nickname 'Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands' suggests. Wander along the cobbled market square and scan the buildings for detailing from the Arts and Crafts design era.

When it’s time to fuel up on food, peruse the menus at independent pubs and restaurants or grab grub to go from one of the stalls in the restored Victorian Butter Market. Buxton (30 minutes) is another fine place for foodies and also appeals to history buffs with its genteel Georgian spa town architecture.

Craving the countryside? Get your fix at the Victorian garden in the National Trust’s Biddulph Grange Country Park (15 minutes). Planted with horticultural specimens from all around the world, it’s a fascinating spot for a stroll.

For nature that’s a little less manicured, dawdle across the Dovedale stepping stones in a valley that leads up to Thorpe Cloud hill (40 minutes’ drive). After taking in the views across the bumpy landscape, trot off for 20 minutes over to Ilam, a tiny village with a tiptop country estate for ambles beside the clear river in 158 acres of parkland before rounding off the trip with treats at the tearoom.
