Heaton House Farm: Scenic views

General

  • Touring pitches on a small farm-style site in rural Cheshire
  • On the edge of the Peak District, a 10-minute drive from Leek
  • Half an hour from Buxton, Stoke-on-Trent and Alton Towers

Scouring the web for a serene space to spend a few nights away in your caravan or motorhome? Hightail it to Heaton House Farm for a stint in stunning countryside on the edge of the Peak District National Park. This site is set amid 165 acres of grounds with views across the lovely landscapes of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Derbyshire from grass pitches that have been reinforced with strong subterranean mesh so they'll be nice and sturdy under your wheels.

There’s much to do around this gorgeous getaway spot in Rushton Spencer, including taking walks by Rudyard Lake (10 minutes’ drive) and across the rocky ridge of The Roaches (20 minutes).

For an adrenaline rush, head to Alton Towers theme park (half an hour) or stay closer by at the Madrenaline Activity Centre (15 minutes’ walk) for archery, skybowing, axe throwing, Segway racing and – perhaps the highlight – rolling down a hill in a sphere.

The park is also half an hour’s drive from Buxton to the north and Stoke-on-Trent to the south. Pubs and restaurants aplenty are a cinch to source for eats within a six-mile radius, including in the market town of Leek (10 minutes).

Toilets and showers are available on request and there are water and Elsan points for use.

Please note

All onsite food and drink establishments are closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Fabulous site with amazing scenery, very relaxing. Good size, level pitches and very clean shower and toilets. Lovely sitting with a cuppa watching the horses, cows, sheep and goats. Great for walking and very close to Rudyard lake where we enjoyed rowing and a picnic.

Lovely owners and team, cant wait to stay again, my two little Jack Russell's loved it.

Only one other pitch in use when we stayed there, so very private and quiet.
Lovely location and the toilets and shower are kept very clean. Some pitches not clearly marked but an email is sent beforehand with details of your allocated number along with a map, so not a problem.

The only down side for us was on arrival- the electric point pitches were not clearly marked. I was expecting to see the numbers on the wall..
Some other motorhome and tent had parked lengthways blocking pitch 2, 3 & 4..
I kindly asked them to move up and we managed to get in and access the electric.

From the manager...

Thank you so much for your review Nicola. Sorry to hear that you had some trouble getting access to the electric point on arrival, but we are pleased to hear that this was rectified. we are delighted that you found the facilities to be clean.

Fabulous small friendly quiet relaxing site, wonderful views of the countryside.

I booked for 2 nights as it was my first time as a solo camper but loved it so much that I decided to stay an extra night .

Mick and Sarah are very helpful, kind and friendly, nothing is too much trouble for them even though they are so busy with farming and weddings too .

The toilets and shower were spotless and nicely decorated too .

I felt so relaxed and safe too being on my own .

Loved that the site was so close to my home so will definitely be back as a regular.

I didn't move off site for the time I was there, Felt no need and just relaxed and read by books and chatted to other campers and the sheep too .

I even was invited to have a cuppa with Pauline who lived in the cottage over the field which was lovely .

The sunsets are absolutely fabulous , I took so many fab photos of it and also the sheep too . (Trying to download photos but sadly it's saying my photos are too small !)

It was the break I needed, 10/10 for everything. I went alone to relax and give myself a mini retreat and that's what I achieved. I felt extremely safe on the campsite on my own too.

I was lucky to see a wonderful wedding whilst there and highly recommend Heaton House Farm if you are looking for somewhere for your wedding, the setting is gorgeous and from what I witnessed whilst camping they really do go over the top to make sure your wedding day is extra special .

Thank you so much Mick, Sarah and also Saskia too for making it happen .

I will be back soon, just need to plan my next escape route to you :)

Beautiful scenery and very well kept grounds. Very peaceful and tranquil site with modern shower block facilities that was kept clean to a very high standard. Totally enjoyed our stay and would definitely return & recommend.

    Disliked:

Only one criticism is that the drainage in the shower block was poor, causing flooding when the shower was in use.

Thank you so much for your review John, we are delighted that you found the site to be so peaceful and enjoyable.

Local attractions

When pottering around the Peak District, don’t miss the postcard-pretty villages. Leek (10 minutes’ drive) is a first-rate spot to kick off explores – as its nickname 'Queen of the Staffordshire Moorlands' suggests. Wander along the cobbled market square and scan the buildings for detailing from the Arts and Crafts design era.

When it’s time to fuel up on food, peruse the menus at independent pubs and restaurants or grab grub to go from one of the stalls in the restored Victorian Butter Market. Buxton (30 minutes) is another fine place for foodies and also appeals to history buffs with its genteel Georgian spa town architecture.

Craving the countryside? Get your fix at the Victorian garden in the National Trust’s Biddulph Grange Country Park (15 minutes). Planted with horticultural specimens from all around the world, it’s a fascinating spot for a stroll.

For nature that’s a little less manicured, dawdle across the Dovedale stepping stones in a valley that leads up to Thorpe Cloud hill (40 minutes’ drive). After taking in the views across the bumpy landscape, trot off for 20 minutes over to Ilam, a tiny village with a tiptop country estate for ambles beside the clear river in 158 acres of parkland before rounding off the trip with treats at the tearoom.

Must see

  • Little Moreton Hall & Gardens (NT) (7.6 miles)
  • Capesthorne Hall & Gardens (9.2 miles)
  • Royal Stafford (9.2 miles)
