  • Small, quiet well-maintained family farm site just outside Silkstone
  • Just off the Trans Pennine Trail and a few miles from Peak District
  • Pubs, supermarket and train station all within walking distance
Heading off into the countryside for a walk or two? Or perhaps hoping to ride bikes along quiet lanes? Stay at South Yorkshire’s Broad Close Farm, just outside the village of Silkstone, and you’ll be able to stroll (or pedal) straight out into woodlands or onto rural pathways. And there’s more… this small and well-maintained site is handy for getting out to or set out to see intriguing places like Pot House Hamlet and the historic site of the Huskar Pit disaster. The Silkstone Waggonway is close by for more cycling and strolling days, and more intrepid bike riders might like to note that this farm is just off the Trans Pennine Trail (roughly at its halfway point, in fact). And of course, the Peak District National Park is but a few miles away… If that all sounds a bit too energetic, you can instead tour the area by train from the local station (10 minutes’ walk away and part of the scenic Penistone line) or hail a bus from the village. All sorts of attractions are close by too, including farm parks, stately homes and the national coal mining museum. Being rural doesn’t mean being cut off around here: a walk of five minutes or so will get you up to the village for two pubs, a steak house and a small supermarket (perhaps to pick up supplies for an evening by the barbecue or campfire back at the farm?)

The Burrow 1 bedroom shepherd's hut (hot tub)

Liked: Lovely secluded location but still close to facilities Hut well equipped and cosy inside Owner very responsive even on a weekday in off season

Disliked: Would be helpful to have a lighter/matches provided, we had to light everything from the gas stove which was a pain Outdoor dining area would benefit from levelling ground under the table and a bit more lighting in this area Outside feels a bit utilitarian, could have some more decorative touches e.g. festoon lights/lanterns around hot tub and dining area

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely area, close to shops and had plenty of green space to walk around. Loved visiting the animals on the farm and had a cute coffee shop on site for weekend campers.

Disliked: Toilets weren't very clean, had a really bad smell. ‘Washing facilities’ consisted of a sink and tap, I couldn’t find an actual shower that you could stand in. Lack of light at night.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: Reasonably quiet, considering how close it is to the M1 - very friendly owners, nice little shop on site and clean facilities in farm yard. Lovely walks direct from the site and three local pubs - the service and food at The Bell was impressive. The Pot House hamlet is nearby too - definitely worth a visit. Would recommend and hope to return next year.

Disliked: Cone Lane is quite a fast road so if you were staying with young children it might be an issue since there is no gate/barrier between the farm-yard/ice cream shop/shower-block and the actual camp-site. There are also a couple of shepherds huts, 'gypsy caravans' and a bell-tent on site, presumably to hire. We were at the bottom end of the site and couldn't quite work out if there was a random unofficially using the bell-tent, bit odd. The loo at the bottom of the field is also quite basic and the cubicles very small........

Gypsy Rose gypsy caravan

Liked: Stayed here two weeks on the run, brought our own tent and stayed on the Gypsy Rose trailer. Lovely and spacious pitches, clean toilets + showers, lovely views, big field for the dog. Loved walking round and seeing the animals. Gypsy Rose was a lovely stay, very comfy bed. Cant wait to return and try a hot tub cabin next.

Disliked: No complaints

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Really hands off approach from the site manager. Easy check in and arrival process. I emailed with a query a few days before arrival and the response time was good. Nice dug out level pitches were a great perk. Good location and easy walk to local pubs and Pot House Hamlet for some lunch, ice cream and to feed the farm animals

Disliked: The toilet facilities could do with some additional cleaning, especially those at the bottom field.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: This is a really nice simple campsite, very clean toilet/showers and a nice camping field. The owner was super nice and advised us of a couple of nice walks we could do from the campsite. We stayed just one night as a stop-off to go to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park (15 mins away by car).

Disliked: nothing

If you’d like to take in more of the area’s lovely views, head to Holmfirth (20 minutes), the epicentre of a network of great walking routes, or take a stroll around Wentworth Castle Gardens (10 minutes). For more of a challenge, it’s a half-hour drive to Bleaklow mountain; meanwhile, for a much easier ride, it’s 20 minutes to Kirklees Light Railway. And if your rural outing isn’t complete without some cute furry animals to coo over, you’ll need a trip to Cannon Hall Farm (10 minutes), which has an adventure playground and farm shop as well as lots of new farmyard friends to meet.
