Broad Close Farm: Tent pitches

General

  • Small, quiet well-maintained family farm site just outside Silkstone
  • Just off the Trans Pennine Trail and a few miles from Peak District
  • Pubs, supermarket and train station all within walking distance

Heading off into the countryside for a walk or two? Or perhaps hoping to ride bikes along quiet lanes? Stay at South Yorkshire’s Broad Close Farm, just outside the village of Silkstone, and you’ll be able to stroll (or pedal) straight out into woodlands or onto rural pathways.

And there’s more… this small and well-maintained site is handy for getting out to or set out to see intriguing places like Pot House Hamlet and the historic site of the Huskar Pit disaster. The Silkstone Waggonway is close by for more cycling and strolling days, and more intrepid bike riders might like to note that this farm is just off the Trans Pennine Trail (roughly at its halfway point, in fact). And of course, the Peak District National Park is but a few miles away…

If that all sounds a bit too energetic, you can instead tour the area by train from the local station (10 minutes’ walk away and part of the scenic Penistone line) or hail a bus from the village. All sorts of attractions are close by too, including farm parks, stately homes and the national coal mining museum.

Being rural doesn’t mean being cut off around here: a walk of five minutes or so will get you up to the village for two pubs, a steak house and a small supermarket (perhaps to pick up supplies for an evening by the barbecue or campfire back at the farm?)

What a beautiful stay. The location is tranquil and very pretty and just the perfect size for us as we like the more peaceful side of things. We had a lovely pitch which backed onto the woods and was near the top of the field, this meant it was just a short walk over the road to the lovely, clean Toilet/Shower/Sink block. There was also a pool table, kettle and microwave alongside fridges and freezers - perfect for us. There is a Co-op fuel station just a few minutes up the road which is ideal. We will be visiting again and would like to sample the local pub and the local walking trails which are highly recommended. Thank you Jonathan.

Loved the space that we had on the site was great. With a lovely woodland area next to the site, great for walks and fire wood for the fire pit at night. Location was perfect for days out to some great walking spots. We went to Cannon hall, the Yorkshire sculpture park and locke park from here.
Lovely waking up to the birdsong in the morning from the woodland.

    Disliked:

There is a main road which separates the washing up and shower location from the main camping field. It is also quite noisy with traffic through the day / evening.

This site was great from the moment we turned up with a nice wide entrance to pull in from the road and the friendly owner who was straight over to let us know where to pitch and where all the facilities are.
Loads of space around on this quiet site and all the facilities you need: Toilets, washing up, water, Elsan and grey water disposal.
The road has a pavement with a well stocked Coop a short walk away to stock up.
Ideal location near to the M1 if like us you want to break up a journey with an overnight stop.

This is a great area to explore for those with an interest in history – you’ll get a real feel for times gone by if you pack in outings to Cannon Hall Museum, Park and Gardens (10 minutes’ drive), the National Coal Mining Museum for England (20 minutes) and the excellent Elsecar Heritage Centre (20 minutes), where you can see craft workshops, old ironworks and a steam railway.
