View to the west

  • Peaceful hilltop campsite with spectacular views of the Tyne Valley
  • A 20-minute drive to Derwent Reservoir; Newcastle-upon-Tyne 30 minutes
  • Dark sky site for stargazing; gastropub five minutes' walk away
Sitting on the edge of the sleepy village of Hedley on the Hill, Valley View Camping has a spectacular setting overlooking the lovely Tyne Valley, with a west-facing position that's splendid for watching the sunset. The grass pitches are on a level field with masses of space for games and activities, so kids can let off steam safely – and it's dog-friendly too, so your pooch can join you on your break. This is a great spot for walkers, with footpaths starting right from the field, where you might get to see buzzards and rare red kites riding the thermals overhead. Cyclists, you can test yourselves on the demanding National Hill-Climb Championships course that ran up into the village from Stocksfield in 2017. What’s provided? Portable toilets and thoughtful extras like complimentary drinking water, tea and raw (unpasteurised) milk fresh from the dairy herd in the cattle trailer, along with a sandpit for the kids. All pitches have a firepit, and logs are available to buy on site. An award-winning gastropub is less than a five-minute walk away in the village, with a fire kitchen and takeaway service. Just down the hill in Stocksfield, there are regular weekend food trucks at the cricket club and local pub. Stocksfield, Mickley and Prudhoe (10 minutes’ drive) have handy local stores where you can pick up goodies to enjoy around the firepit.

What customers say

This campsite offers spectacular views and a peaceful atmosphere, with many appreciating the spacious pitches and fire pits. The portaloos are consistently praised for their cleanliness. A local pub is conveniently located a short walk away. While some noted occasional noise from other campers and windy conditions due to the exposed location, the overall sentiment is positive, with many expressing a desire to return. Complimentary milk and hot drinks are a thoughtful touch.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice spacious plots. Fire pits already set up to use. Lovely views if you manage to get on the right side of the field (and the sky is clear). Little washing station with fresh water. Toilets were extremely clean for portaloos. General waste bin, recycling, gas bin and ash bins available which meant the site was extremely clean and tidy. No litter etc. Perfect bit of wild camping. Make sure to take some outdoor toys for the kids if you have them. Long grass was perfect for bug hunting!! Owner popped to say we could stay a bit longer in the morning if needed due to the weather being wet and needing our tents dried out which I thought was really kind.

Disliked 3 portaloos were all next to each other down near the entrance which can be a bit of a walk depending where you are in the field. The toilet did have fairy lights on so you could see where it was in the field in the dark.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Spacious pitches, flexibility of where to pitch. Fire pits allowed which is a bonus. Owners even delver fire wood to your tent. Toilets were immaculate.

Local attractions

What with the Tyne Riverside Country Park (20 minutes’ drive) and Northumberland National Park (30 minutes’ drive) being so close, it’s time to get those walking shoes on for bracing hikes and gorgeous views. Chopwell Woodland Park (15 minutes) has plenty of easy walks along former railway lines that suit families with young kids. Cycling trails criss-cross Northumberland, with arduous options for long-distances bikers along the Coast to Coast Path, and waterside rides around Derwent Reservoir (20 minutes), which is also a great option for anglers looking for a spot of fly fishing. Lucky old golfers are spoilt for choice too, with several courses within a 15-minute drive of base camp. The historic towns of Corbridge (20 minutes) and Hexham (30 minutes) are packed with cosy tea shops and arty boutiques, and it’s only 30 minutes into Newcastle for big-hitting attractions like the Life Science Centre and Angel of the North sculpture.
