A brew with a view

  • Peaceful hilltop campsite with spectacular views of the Tyne Valley
  • A 20-minute drive to Derwent Reservoir; Newcastle-upon-Tyne 30 minutes
  • Dark sky site for stargazing; gastropub five minutes' walk away
Sitting on the edge of the sleepy village of Hedley on the Hill, Valley View Camping has a spectacular setting overlooking the lovely Tyne Valley, with a west-facing position that's splendid for watching the sunset. The grass pitches are on a level field with masses of space for games and activities, so kids can let off steam safely (perhaps flying one of the kites available to borrow on site) – and it's dog-friendly too, so your pooch can join you on your break. This is a great spot for walkers, with footpaths starting right from the field, where you might get to see buzzards and rare red kites riding the thermals overhead. Cyclists, you can test yourselves on the demanding National Hill-Climb Championships course that ran up into the village from Stocksfield in 2017. What’s provided? Portable toilets and thoughtful extras like complimentary drinking water, tea, coffee and raw (unpasteurised) milk fresh from the dairy herd in the cattle trailer, along with a sandpit for the kids. All pitches have a firepit, and logs are available to buy on site. An award-winning gastropub is less than a five-minute walk away in the village, with a fire kitchen and takeaway service. Just down the hill in Stocksfield, there are regular weekend food trucks at the cricket club and local pub. Stocksfield, Mickley and Prudhoe (10 minutes’ drive) have handy local stores where you can pick up goodies to enjoy around the firepit. If you'd like to take to the skies, guests also get a discounted walk-in rate at Northumbria Gliding Club, which is five minutes' drive away.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked Lovely stay as always. Toilets clean. Communication great. Fab fire packs. Pitches clearly marked and free from debris.
Heather was great when we couldn’t make our planned trip due to illness and was incredibly accommodating.
Heather also went around the camp site helping people pitch in wind which was a lovely touch. Above and beyond!

Disliked No fault of owners, but some music went on past the quiet hours. Expected on a Saturday evening.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked Friendly owner, beautiful views, close to a lovely village pub, spacious pitches and fire pits are a great touch.

Disliked The well documented wind but, as someone has said, that’s the price you pay for the spectacular views. However, I wouldn’t recommend pitching an Air Tent. Ours kept collapsing in on itself, my dog couldn’t settle so we resorted to sleeping in my car from 2:30.
While difficult to police, fellow campers blaring music until 12:45 also didn’t help my night’s sleep. It was only when another camper screamed at them where to go, did it stop.
Lastly, there was no toilet paper in either toilet when I visited at 6:30 (which I don’t think is particularly early and plenty of other campers were beginning to stir then too) and no milk available for my morning cuppa. I’m working on the assumption milk is normally available, based on a sign in the self-service area.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked The views are spectacular!!!

Disliked Very windy, no shelter from the wind (trees)
Rubbish bin wasn't open, so there was litter dotted around.
The water tap is very slow and the sink area could do with a tidy/clean.

From the manager: We are pleased you enjoyed our stunning view. Our hill top position gives us uninterrupted views stretching for miles. Sorry about the wind spoiling your stay.
In regards to the rubbish the lock on tbe bin had jammed. Our campers had neatly placed their bagged rubbish next to the bin and we fixed the problem as soon as we were aware. Fot the safety of our cows, its imperative we keep the field litter free, so we clear any litter as soon as we see it.
We also regularly check and clean the sink, but it's only as clean as the last person left it. If you'd let us know at the time we would have popped up straight away.

Couldn’t fault this place, basic but done exceptionally well.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked Loved no extra charge for a second car or dog. Milk on request was lovely and went well in our cuppas. Kids loved running through the longer grass with the dog and playing hide and seek. The main area of camp site was short grass and very obviously marked out. Liked the fact there were fire pits available to use for the obligatory s’mores! Toilets really clean and water replenished often. Ground easy for pegs too. We’re already planning our next visit!

Disliked Absolutely nothing!

From the manager: Thank you so much for the lovely review, it means a lot to us. We love to hear about your time with us. Hope to see you again soon.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked Big spacious pitches. Toilets were very clean, albeit only the two on site.

Unfortunately we didn't get to experience the free milk/water etc as the wind was so bad we had to pack up an hour after getting there. The downside of such good views is being very exposed to the weather.

We will come back and try again, hopefully without the tent blowing away.

Disliked Not much really, other than the wind, which I imagine will always be noticeability stronger being where the site is.

From the manager: Thanks for your review. We are pleased you like our site. The wind was strong when you stayed. We recommend pitching along the hedge from entrance when its particularly windy.

Unpowered grass trailer tent or tent site

Liked Loads of room for the kids to run around, pitches were far enough apart so didn’t feel like we’re on top of one another, toilets were clean and well kept and added bonus of fresh milk and drinking water available for free

Disliked Nothing about the campsite, just the weather especially the wind, everything else was spot on.

From the manager: It's great to hear the kids had a good time and you enjoyed some of our lovely fresh milk. Look forward to welcoming you back soon.

Local attractions

What with the Tyne Riverside Country Park (20 minutes’ drive) and Northumberland National Park (30 minutes’ drive) being so close, it’s time to get those walking shoes on for bracing hikes and gorgeous views. Chopwell Woodland Park (15 minutes) has plenty of easy walks along former railway lines that suit families with young kids. Cycling trails criss-cross Northumberland, with arduous options for long-distances bikers along the Coast to Coast Path, and waterside rides around Derwent Reservoir (20 minutes), which is also a great option for anglers looking for a spot of fly fishing. Lucky old golfers are spoilt for choice too, with several courses within a 15-minute drive of base camp. The historic towns of Corbridge (20 minutes) and Hexham (30 minutes) are packed with cosy tea shops and arty boutiques, and it’s only 30 minutes into Newcastle for big-hitting attractions like the Life Science Centre and Angel of the North sculpture.
