Pitch on the Wall Campsite: Grassy pitches

General

  • Family-friendly back to basics site in rural Northumberland
  • A five-minute drive to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Hadrian's Wall
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; historic pubs and alpaca farm nearby

Dubbed Hadrian’s Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time…

In the Northumberland countryside, close to the ancient Hadrian’s Wall (could this be the longest UNESCO World Heritage Site, at 75 miles long?), Pitch on the Wall Campsite is a small, family-friendly site smack bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Newcastle upon Tyne and five minutes from the historic town of Heddon-on-the-Wall, this is a fine base to conquer the country Roman-style, explore its networking of hiking and cycling routes, or chase through the sloping countryside, using the wall as your guide.

This a back to basics site with just running water and portaloos, so it's a real rural Northumberland experience. It wouldn’t be right to let your pooch miss out on all this greenery, so dogs are welcome too, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm so you can stock up on your snoozing for another day spent out exploring.

You'll be able to keep warm of an evening as campfires are allowed on site (grab a firepit on site before they all go…) with wood available for purchase. Pub grub and wholesome meals are served at several pubs and cafes with a five-minute drive, but you may prefer to pull out all the stops for a family barbecue on site. Grab all the extra buns and bits for the grill at several shops five minutes away, or simply sign up for food shopping delivered through your tent flap on site.

We liked everything so much we actually booked extra day kids had plenty of room to run around made their own fun and loved the planes flying over head. Sarah and Ruth were both friendly and helpful toilets were clean and checked regularly fresh water supply bbq and fire allowed as long as raised so we had nice bbq and warm fire on night the prices for fire starter set and logs were reasonably priced and plenty to last stgay was also easy to contact staff if needed more. The views were nice and got to see some wildlife too. Best part of all is its close to home but still very quiet been close to a city

Quiet open space, children had freedom to run and play without worry, staff checked in daily to ensure everything was OK, hire of fire pits was a decent additional option.

    Disliked:

Took own water as unsure if tap water onsite was safe, price of a bag of logs was a bit expensive given amount of logs in a bag. Portaloo cleanliness was low however this is down to individuals using them and not a reflection of staff.

From the manager...

We hope to see you again soon!

For future reference the tap water onsite is safe for drinking.

Taking into account the cleanliness of the portaloos, we're providing a large number over the summer to ensure they stay well maintained and hygienic.

Site was easy to find, and kept clean and tidy. Lots of helpful info was posted around site gate. Staff member was very helpful and friendly. Great location for walks, parks, village pubs etc. Exactly what we wanted. Only knocked a star off because the porta loos weren't very clean and out of water. Well stocked with loo roll, soap and hand towels though. Will visit again. Thanks.

Thanks for letting us know about the toilets, the water seemed to run out quickly - taking this into account were providing a large number of loos over the summer.
