General

  • Family-friendly back to basics site in rural Northumberland
  • A five-minute drive to Heddon-on-the-Wall and Hadrian's Wall
  • Campfires and barbecues allowed; historic pubs and alpaca farm nearby

Dubbed Hadrian’s Wall country, this was once the land of the Romans. It's hard to imagine the world of crossbows and armour now, but timeworn battlements, fortresses, and ramparts will help you to travel back in time…

In the Northumberland countryside, close to the ancient Hadrian’s Wall (could this be the longest UNESCO World Heritage Site, at 75 miles long?), Pitch on the Wall Campsite is a small, family-friendly site smack bang in the middle of Hadrian’s Wall country. Within 15 minutes’ drive of Newcastle upon Tyne and five minutes from the historic town of Heddon-on-the-Wall, this is a fine base to conquer the country Roman-style, explore its networking of hiking and cycling routes, or chase through the sloping countryside, using the wall as your guide.

This a back to basics site with just running water and portaloos, so it's a real rural Northumberland experience. It wouldn’t be right to let your pooch miss out on all this greenery, so dogs are welcome too, and noise is kept to a minimum after 11pm so you can stock up on your snoozing for another day spent out exploring.

You'll be able to keep warm of an evening as campfires are allowed on site (grab a firepit on site before they all go…) with wood available for purchase. Pub grub and wholesome meals are served at several pubs and cafes with a five-minute drive, but you may prefer to pull out all the stops for a family barbecue on site. Grab all the extra buns and bits for the grill at several shops five minutes away, or simply sign up for food shopping delivered through your tent flap on site.

Big, low cost site with water and portaloos08/20/2021

Plenty of space in the campsite. A good low cost site that provided all we needed and had what was advertised. Good, clean portaloos with wash bowls, and enough of them so that there were never any queues.

    Disliked:

The signposts could have been better. We didn't see a sign on the main road and the sign approaching the site on the minor road was facing in the other direction. There was a fresh water tap, but only one in the big field, so could be quite a walk to it.

Easy to find and a great location as a base for exploring English Heritage sites - there are lots within a 10 mile radius, and it's only 30-40 minutes' drive to Tynemouth too. Peaceful site, felt safe, plenty of space for the children to run around. Left to ourselves (we didn't see the owners at all) and there weren't many other campers so if you want to retreat and have some privacy, it's good.

    Disliked:

The toilets were clean but there was often no soap, or only in one of the four units. Having said that, we used gel when we got back to the tent to minimise Covid risk even if we'd been able to wash our hands. The grass was quite long so the children's trainers got soaked through on the way to the toilet a few times when they forgot to put on something waterproof. An onsite bin would be helpful but we knew there wasn't one beforehand so we were prepared.

Plenty space to fit a spot to pitch the tent. The site was well maintained. Considering there was portaloos they were extremely clean. I also like that there was a bulletin board with useful information on regarding closest shops, pubs etc. It came in very handy when we forgot to pack out tooth brushes!

I would definitely recommend staying here if you’re after a relax basic camping trip that is surrounded by some outstanding walking routes and scenery.
