  • Well-maintained small rural Northumberland touring site
  • Kielder Water, Alnwick and Newcastle within a 40-minute drive
  • Dog-friendly site with peaceful pitches; great area for walking
Historic estates, castles, Roman walls and miles of spectacular Northumberland countryside… that’s some of what’s in store nearby when you put down roots at Elf Hills Farm in rural Northumberland. This may be a small place (with just a handful of pitches on site), but it is also a rather well-located one… Near the village of Cambo, this site is in a fine spot for days of walking, either in the nearby Northumberland National Park, in the area around Kielder Water or over at the coast (you can’t go wrong with any choice, really). As for those history buffs among you, there’s plenty of that around too, in the form of National Trust properties, Hexham Abbey and the Roman attractions of Hadrian’s Wall. You might even like to throw in a bit of urban time in the centre of Newcastle, 40 minutes’ drive away. Whatever you choose to fill your days with, you’ll be coming back to a peaceful site where the pitches are pleasingly spacious and have access to mains water, chemical disposal and electric hookups. Dogs are welcome too, and barbecues are permitted on site. There are also a couple of pubs about 15 minutes’ drive away if you fancy eating out.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: A quiet site in a rural location. Views across the fields were lovely with at least one footpath nearby. All pitches are grass with electric hook up. The facilities included: drinking water tap, grey water disposal, chemical toilet disposal, and rubbish/recycling bins. No wifi but phone signals were good. A resident warden was on site during our stay.

Disliked: Sadly it rained heavily during our 1 night stay so we didn’t get out to enjoy the area much here. No fault of the site.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: It’s remote and takes quite some time to access from surrounding towns especially up the final long, very narrow and bumpy entrance drive. If you like solitude, this may be the place for you. Host was friendly and helpful.

Disliked: There is zero to do once you get there. Dark skies were spoiled by driving rain and walks seemed limited.

From the manager: We’re sorry the site wasn’t for you… lots of our regular clients do enjoy the peace and quiet and find lots to do across Northumberland, despite the rain we’ve had this summer. The facilities on the site are as advertised but thank you for your positive comments about the site warden.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked: Small campsite with only about 7 pitches. The views were beautiful. Perfect time of year for all the little lambs. The camp warden was friendly and helpful with directions and helping set up a campfire. Would love to visit again.

Disliked: No toilet facilities but the site was upfront about this before we arrived. The road to the campsite is a little steep

Local attractions

Live like you’re back in the old times… you may soon start to feel that way, with so many historical properties in the area surrounding Elf Hills Farm. Stroll the grounds of a Victorian villa at the National Trust’s Wallington (10 minutes’ drive), explore the Victorian rooms and tools at the National Trust’s Cragside (25 minutes) or have a good lose-yourself type of wander around the large Belsay Hall, Castle and Gardens (15 minutes). More historical sites aren’t far off either – perhaps the Chesters Roman Fort and Museum (25 minutes) or Vindolanda (40 minutes), another Roman site, for a look at a whole different time period? Alnwick Castle (40 minutes), where there are Harry Potter-themed activities? Hexham Abbey (35 minutes), a Grade I-listed location? Set your sights on the stars instead at Battlesteads Public Observatory (half an hour). By daylight, it's easy to pick up the pace with cycles, walks and wildlife spotting around the lake at Kielder Water (35 minutes). In Newcastle upon Tyne (40 minutes), you’ll get a taste of the city life, and some cool landmarks, such as the 12th-century castle, the Gateshead Millennium Bridge and the Quayside.
