Beach

  • Cabins with sea views within half an hour's walk of Cocklawburn beach
  • Within half an hour's drive of Alnwick Castle and Berwick-upon-Tweed
  • Café, arts centre and small shop at reception selling local produce
Picture the scene: sea views, the salt breeze and dinner sizzling on the barbecue… pick yourself a cabin at Pot-a-Doodle Do and all this can be yours with utter ease. This little Northumberland nirvana has cosy and heated cabins insulated against the most bracing of breezes, and is set a short stroll from Cocklawburn beach for days of seaside wanders and rockpooling. And after such days? There’s no finer way to finish up than a meal prepped on a barbecue or campfire, or indoors in the fully-equipped kitchen that comes with each cabin. Guests are also welcome to hire a barbecue hut with a charcoal pit and indoor seating. And if you'd like meals with a little less effort? Despair not, for the café dishes up breakfasts, lunches and snacks. The on-site shop within the reception stocks homemade jams and chutneys made on site using apples picked from the orchard. Some of the apples have been crafted into award-winning cider, also for sale. The shop also sells local produce such as Lindisfarne mead and wines, local lager and beer, chocolate and ice cream. Elsewhere around the site, there’s plenty of room to run around; those with extra energy to expend can hurtle around the securely-fenced playground, and creative small sorts can squirrel themselves away at the interactive arts centre, making pottery, figurines and glass.

Liked Good location, nice site, polite staff and good communication

Clean showers

Great communal kitchen

Disliked A lot of the activities advertised are no longer there, no go karts, lake has been sold off so no fishing either.

Charges for ‘fire pits’ i.e. the inside of an old tyre seem pretty excessive

Lots of rules on the site - the guidebook should be available before booking

We had the basic wigwam - no sink/microwave would have been much better (couldn’t find the option to upgrade when booking - possibly fully booked)

Really great time and will be back

Liked Lovely, quiet campsite with good facilities. Communal kitchen is well equipped and the owners/staff were friendly. The wigwams were great with plenty of room for 2.

Disliked The shop left a lot to be desired, was mainly stocked with toys and local jam/alcohol so make sure you head to the supermarket beforehand to stock up

Fantastic site with lots of great facilities, a little gem of a site.

Liked Everything!! The pod was clean, warm and spacious, you can get pods with en suite bathrooms but we didn’t, we used the communal bathroom facilities and they were fantastic. The showers were clean and hot with plenty of room to get washed and dressed within them.
The communal kitchen was a great surprise, everything you could ever need to cook whatever takes your fancy, they even had washing machines for us to use if required.
They have got BBQ huts that you can use which are under cover so you can BBQ in whatever the English weather throws at you.
The onsite restaurant serves the best breakfast ever, it doesn’t look too big but it’s a struggle to get through it all, all the items on the plate were delicious and of a good quality, then Sunday arrived and it was time for the Sunday roast to make an appearance, OMG, the roast was amazing, we had the roast beef roast and we absolutely loved it, I highly recommend the roast to every guest, you will not be disappointed.
The whole site was spotless and the staff were super friendly, nothing was too much trouble and they were all very welcoming, I’m looking forward to a return visit very soon.
Oh I nearly forgot the cider, the farm makes their own cider and it is fantastic, a little pricey but well worth the cost if you are a cider drinker like us, the different flavours are just delicious.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Liked What a wonderful experience we had at Pot a doodle do. The camping pod was so comfortable, and the kitchen and washing facilities were great. The on site cafe was so convenient and of course we couldn't come away without painting some pottery of our own. We had a fantastic holiday and can't wait to return next year.

Liked Staying in the ‘wigwam’ was fun for the children. The accommodation was certainly more comfortable than camping. Facilities on site were good. The children enjoyed the pedal karts and the playground and the restaurant was nice.

Liked We loved our little stay here, wigwam was lovely and clean, the staff were lovely, we had breakfast in the café and it was to die for. Toilets and shower blocks were clean, the place was lovely and quiet. Not far from shops, loads of food places to eat too.

Disliked There wasn't much for the kids to do, they did like the go karts and the park (we didn't realise there was a park till the night before we left as it was well hiden) I think it would of been better if the café/restaurant stayed open after 3-4pm as we wanted to have our dinner there but 3pm was too early. Would be great if there was evening entertainment or even a bar. As it is on a farm, it would of been great if the kids could feed farm animals or get to hold them.

Local attractions

A short walk away, Cocklawburn beach has to be an early port of call for walks, dips and rockpooling. If you’re up for a hike with views, it’s about an hour to Berwick-upon-Tweed (or 10 minutes by car) where there’s a pair of castles and a military museum, an old jail to get locked up in and a walking trail in the footsteps of famed northern painter LS Lowry. If you’re up for moats and ramparts, the castles of Alnwick, Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh are around half an hour’s drive away, the first of the trio being particularly popular with fans of a certain H Potter… Lindisfarne has a fine castle too: at certain times of day you can drive or walk across the causeway to the island; otherwise head to Seahouses (half an hour) and catch a boat to the ancient sanctuary, spotting seals and puffins enroute. Have tea among the bees at Chain Bridge Honey Farm 15 minutes away: tours teach visitors about the industrious insects while the shop and café do a nice line in sweet treats. If mammals and reptiles are more your thing, around 50 species await at Northumberland Country Zoo (45 minutes), from pattable Shetland ponies to somewhat stinky skunks.
