Lilling Hall Farm: Front paddock left

General

  • Paddock pitches behind a Georgian farmhouse in rural North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Castle Howard, and 20 minutes to historic York
  • Back-to-basics camping close to pubs, hiking, cycling and museums

Elegant, Georgian-era Lilling Hall Farm sits in a rural setting surrounded by peaceful countryside. With just a few pitches for tents on its paddock, this makes an amazing base for nature lovers, walkers and cyclists who like to mix up their holidays with a dollop of history and culture.

Strensall Common (five minutes’ drive) offers easy family walks across heathland, while the North Yorkshire Moors National Park (10 minutes) has a whole host of cycling and hiking opportunities across scenic moorland and through gorgeous villages.

All this wild countryside and yet such easy access to the historic city of York (20 minutes), with its Roman walls, vast minster and Jorvik Viking Centre – a sure-fire hit with the kids. Romantic Castle Howard (10 minutes) and its Capability Brown landscapes have plenty to keep the whole family occupied, from rope courses to fascinating tours of the main house.

You can also pick up the A64 at Flaxton Moor (five minutes) for day trips to the legendary east-coast seaside resorts of Scarborough and Bridlington, or pick up the vintage steam train at Pickering (30 minutes) and chuff your way to Whitby.

Back at base, there are plenty of historic pubs in surrounding villages for you to rest up in after a day’s activity, all selling good grub and Yorkshire bitter.

Gary & Lynne make you feel very welcome at the farm, they've provided extra touches that go above & beyond other sites of this size, such as a handy personal guide, bottled water, ice. The energy of the farm is lovely and the clear unpolluted night sky was spectacular on the edge of the Howardian hills. The location of the farm is perfect for so many sites and places of interest. I'd highly recommend staying here.

Wonderfully quiet, adult-only site (max 6 pitches)...basically a small, level paddock with mature trees facing a gorgeous Georgian farmhouse on the site of racehorse training and breeding business. Electric hookups are the only service to pitch but there is means for chem toilet disposal on site (leave it by the door and the owner does it for you!), waste water disposal (not reachable by pipe for now) and a spotless WC. So facilities are basic but adequate (and will improve over time) and we had the friendliest of welcomes in a beautiful, restful setting and the best night's sleep!
