  • Paddock pitches behind a Georgian farmhouse in rural North Yorkshire
  • A 10-minute drive to Castle Howard, and 20 minutes to historic York
  • Back-to-basics camping for adults only, 10 minutes' walk from a pub
Elegant, Georgian-era Lilling Hall Farm is in a rural setting surrounded by peaceful North Yorkshire countryside. With just a few pitches on its paddock, this adults-only spot makes a convenient base for nature lovers, walkers and cyclists who like to mix up their holidays with a dollop of history and culture. The level grass camping field has mature trees for shelter, and there are a couple of seating areas in secluded corners of the garden where you can relax on sunny days. The friendly site owners are happy to dole out teas and coffees (and the occasional seasonal fruit or free-range egg) on your arrival, and chat about what you might do during your stay. You may get to watch horses being schooled during your stay (please note, due to the horses, no dogs are allowed on the site) – and thanks to the lack of light pollution in these parts, when clear, the night sky is awash with stars. Thornton-le-Clay village (10 minutes’ walk) has a couple of pubs, and there are many more to be discovered in surrounding villages, where you can rest up after a day’s adventure and enjoy good grub along with Yorkshire bitter. This is a back-to-basics site, albeit one in lovely surroundings, so please be aware that facilities are simple – including toilets, showers, chemical waste disposal and a wifi connection; there is no hot water outside

What customers say

This is a small, peaceful, adults-only campsite with a focus on tranquility and friendly hosts. Guests frequently highlight the welcoming nature of the owners, the clean and well-maintained bathroom facilities, and the beautiful rural setting with views of horses. The location is considered excellent for visiting York via park and ride. A minor issue raised by one guest was the lack of hot water for dishwashing. One reviewer experienced difficulty with the site entrance, leading to a tyre puncture, though the manager stated this was an isolated incident and access is generally fine.

Liked Absolutely loved our 2 night stay.
We instantly felt relaxed and comfortable when we arrived.

Lynne was more than welcoming, meeting us as we pulled up.
Gave us lots of information about places to eat and the local amenities in the surrounding villages.
She was so kind and offered us a cup of tea!
The site has such a peaceful atmosphere.
It was really lovely to see the horses in the fields too.

The toilet and shower room was impeccably clean.
The camping field was ideal.with Flat levil pitches. Water on hand and a washing up area.

We had a gorgeous Sunday lunch at the blacksmiths arms. Which is about a half hour stroll away.
Well recommended!

If there is such a thing as a perfect campsite, this is definitely ours. Can't wait to visit again!

Liked Everything about this place is special. The welcome was very warm with a cup of tea and biscuits at our arrival and a tour around the stables to meet their horses.
The farm has been a project of love by the owners and it shows. Some may find the outdoor facilities basic but the shower room was cosy and clean.
It's a very peaceful place and has dark skies for stargazing. We would be happy to stay again.
We also liked the recently reopened Blacksmiths Arms a couple of minutes away by car. (Thanks, Lynne, we'll bring our bikes next time.)

Disliked We found nothing to dislike at this wonderful campsite though just a heads up, the entrance may be a bit tight for large motorhomes.

Electric grass touring pitch

Liked Lovely site with very limited number of pitches, all with electric hook up available, which meant it was very peaceful and not over crowded. We stayed for 4 nights and loved every minute of it. Lynne and family were great, very warm and friendly but not obtrusive.
It is in a really peaceful location but not too far from places to visit e.g Castle Howard is only about 20 minute drive from the site. We also visited Scarborough and Whitby which are around 40 minute drive.
Would recommend looking here wether its for a stop over or longer stay.
There is only one shared toilet/shower room which is a minor draw back but it was spotlessly clean and well maintained.
There was also a freezer with ice in for a chilled evening drink after a day of sight seeing.

Liked The views

Disliked Having read all the other reviews, we were expecting a great experience. However, I’m afraid we didn’t find much to recommend at this site. There was no sign of the warm welcome that others mention, the facilities were really disappointing (what seemed to be a shared toilet/shower with the owners) and the site was generally run-down. In addition, there was a large, sharp rock sticking out of the kerb on the very tight entrance to the field, which immediately upon arrival punctured my tyre, leading to a very expensive and stressful start to our break.

From the manager: Well there we have it our first bad review. On arrival the guests were met as usual and given their pitch next to another lady in a campervan very similar to Kate’s.
The couple of ladies were shown where the toilets were located and asked to pay when Lynne got back from work ( which they were happy about ) however insisted on paying by card transaction. Stating on our portal it doesn’t say cash. Whilst Kate was at the toilet I went to bring out an old pony aged 30+ years and a yearling racehorse. Kate was stroking the yearling saying she was beautiful and expressed her dad had a farm when they were younger. I was in the field when I heard a loud bang looked up to see their camper shooting out of the gate. I asked a young lad on site who’s been working for us fixing a window had they hit the gate post ?
I went to check the post it was fine so went back to work in wonderment. Next my neighbour came to see me and explained he’d just changed the ladies tyre.
We have been open 5 years with no problems whatsoever with access into the campsite even with big trailers on. I don’t know how they managed to hit the kerb beneath the big tree 🌴 we are sorry for any inconvenience the two ladies had, but to say what they put is totally different from the other lady who stayed next to them she gave us a 9/10. Onwards and upwards 👆
