Beechwood Caravan Park York: Peaceful day (photo added by manager on 04/08/2022)

General

  • Family-friendly caravan park in a rural spot just off the A64
  • A 10-minute drive from central York; park and ride close by
  • Peaceful eight-acre site with spacious serviced pitches

York, oh yes indeed – and as many times as you fancy popping in too… As the name suggests, Beechwood Caravan Park York is in a most handy spot for days out in this splendid city – it’s just off the A64 and about a 10-minute drive from the city centre (or a stress-free bus ride from the park and ride two miles away).

Not that you’d guess either of those facts while staying at this peaceful rural North Yorkshire site: it’s a private and sheltered spot spread over eight acres surrounded by mature trees and hedgerows. There’s plenty of space on the pitches, all of which have electric hookups and access to a chemical disposal area and recycling facilities.

Other facilities at this family-friendly touring site include a washing-up area and male, female and unisex/family bathrooms with toilets, basins and full-height showers with free hot water. (Please note the facilities are not heated)

Visiting York several times is a fine idea, of course, allowing you to explore the city at your leisure rather than cramming it all in. This is, however, one of those particularly fine spots where you really can mix up a bit of city time, a bit of country time and a bit of coast time. Shake things up a bit by getting to the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in about 15 minutes’ drive, the North York Moors National Park in 40 minutes and the coast at Bridlington in an hour or so.

pitch size was very good, we liked that it had its own service point (ie water and electric)
the pitch was lovely and level too
the site was spacious with lots of room between pitches, there was a short walk to the bus stop into the city and a short drive to park and ride for the city
also a good location for further exploration
the showers were spacious with plenty of room to get changed etc,

    Disliked:

if i am really picky (and this is just personal) i would have liked the water to be slighter hotter in the showers and also for washing up, however this was just me
my husband thought it was fine
i would have liked some plug points for hair drying in the shower block, (i did not find any)
it would have been nice to have wi fi, but again not the end of the world

we had a lovely stay with you

This was the perfect site for us and we had a lovely week. Travelled as a family of 4 (2 children aged 3 and 9). We were right next to the play area, as requested, and there was plenty of other safe space for the children to play. The site was lovely and quiet, and the owners were very friendly and helpful. Fully serviced pitch was perfect. Toilet and shower facilities are very nice and clean. It was a bonus that each cubicle has a shower, sink and toilet in it. The washing up area was undercover and nice and clean too. It didn't matter that the shower blocks weren't heated - it didn't feel cold at all. The location is excellent! Easy access from the main road, but we didn't hear the traffic. Just a few minutes from the park and ride into York, which we used several times and was cheaper than the York carparks (children go free with a paying adult). We also ate at the Toby carvery one night which was just around the corner, as are ample supermarkets and other shops. Plenty to do. We discovered Murton Park just down the road (outdoor living museum - vikings, stone age, farming history - plus animals and play area. Great value with free return. Loved the Jorvik centre, again12 months free return (we went twice) and Jorvik dig. Also went to Flamingo land which was half an hour away. Again, an excellent day out with lots of rides and a lovely zoo.

    Disliked:

Nothing. Only that there was no WiFi. Would definitely stay again.

Local attractions

Naturally you’ll want to start with York, for history-tinged days at the Jorvik Viking Centre and the minster, strolls down the Shambles, (free) engine-gazing at the National Railway Museum, cruises on the Ouse and sweet tales at York’s Chocolate Story.

And then? Maybe for more excellent architecture at Castle Howard (25 minutes’ drive) or Ripon cathedral (45 minutes), or a journey back to the past with a steam railway ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (an hour)? Or perhaps turn eyes to the skies with a trip to the Yorkshire Air Museum (10 minutes)?

If you’re of the opinion that no visit to the countryside is complete until you’ve brushed a pig or milked a cow, you can get such things sorted at Piglets Adventure Farm (10 minutes). Thirsk racecourse (40 minutes) is the place if you’d rather see the horses going full pelt, while Flamingo Land Resort (half an hour) should be on the list if you’d rather hurtle along rides or meet exotic beasts.

Beach time? It’s around an hour’s drive to Bridlington for a classic British seaside day out – think funfairs, amusements, donkey rides and tasty portions of fish and chips.
