  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

What customers say

This campsite is praised for its outstanding cliff-top location with stunning views of Whitby Abbey and the sea. Guests frequently mention the short walking distance to Whitby town, the nearby brewery, and the convenience of being on the coastal path. The site is described as spacious with the freedom to choose pitches, and staff are consistently noted as friendly and helpful. Facilities are basic, with toilets being the most common area for feedback, often described as functional but needing improvement or more capacity during busy periods. Wind can be a factor due to the exposed cliff-top position. Despite basic amenities, the location and views make it a popular choice for repeat visitors.

Liked Excellent location for visiting Whitby and the Brewery.

Campsite was kept tidy throughout our stay. Bins emptied regularly and the toilets were kept stocked with toilet paper, hand soap and paper towels.

Nice and peaceful in the evening despite the number of people there.

Able to choose where you pitch.

Disliked Toilets were a bit busy in the morning.

Would have been good if there were showers so we could have stayed longer but it is advertised that there aren’t any so can’t complain.

Liked Was basic, but great views, cheap as chips, friendly and helpful staff. Toilets were clean. Last minute booking I have absolutely nothing to complain about, it did what it said on the tin.

Liked Fantastic large site with stunning views of Whitby Abbey and the sea. It was an extremely busy site but everyone seemed respectful of noise levels. The site was patrolled by staff often and the portaloos stocked up with toilet roll regularly. The staff were also friendly and helpful. Definitely stay there again!

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
