  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

What customers say

This is a basic, back-to-basics campsite celebrated for its superb location. Visitors consistently praise the stunning views of the sea and Whitby Abbey, as well as the short walking distance to the town centre and local brewery. Staff are frequently described as friendly and helpful. While facilities are noted as basic, many found them adequate for short stays, although some highlighted a lack of showers and occasional issues with toilet cleanliness and availability during busy periods. Wind can be a factor due to the cliff-top position.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked Great location close to the fab brewery tap room, the Abbey and the top of the famous steps.

Huge area so plenty of space to park or pitch.

Basic site, but as long as you know what you’re booking I don’t think you can complain.

Disliked Open space so on a windy night you would be open to the elements

The view is absolutely breathtaking!
The costal walk is literally on the door step and the view of the Abbey is unreal. A firm favorite now for us and we can't wait to return. Huge thanks for the beautiful memories ❤️

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked That you could pick your own pitch, I can't comment on the toilets as we didn't use them the site was clean and tidy and you can walk into robin hood bay or take a bus their was a pub/ brewery next to the site which also made pizza. It was very busy so we took our to go. The Abbie could be Sean from the camp site and fields all around. Just pass the Abbie was the 100+ steps which lead to Whitby a beautifully sea side town, we went on a boat ride around the harbour but you could get a boat to just out at sea. It was well worth the money and we be going again. The site was very quite at night and we had a good night sleep.

Disliked The chemical waste was put into abs, which was quite hard to reach so we decided to take the waste home.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
