  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey
When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Non-electric grass touring pitch

Liked: I liked the position as is only 10 mins walk into the heart of Whitby centre. The sea view is a lovely bonus, as is the Whitby brewery only next door & the abbey across the road. The site is surprisingly quiet for its size & was checked by staff regularly. There are 2 separate toilet blocks consisting of 3 toilets and wash basin, no shower, which the site does state anyway, these facilities are topped up with toilet rolls & hand sanitizer regularly. There are Elsan waste tanks & a water tank along with skips for rubbish dotted around the site.

Disliked: There is nothing I disliked about this site, it’s states the facilities it has before booking.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary. Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes). There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
