Yorkshire dales view

  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs
Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab... Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that for even a sec. Gaze in one direction and you'll hopefully see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds. Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe, an hour’s drive away, if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air. Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Liked: Friendly owners, lots of choice of where to pitch up. Range of toilet blocks. Sheltered pot wash area. Picnic benches available. Approx 30 min walk from Horton in Ribblesdale train station.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Lovely campsite just a mile from the village. Great base for hiking the Three Peaks. Toilets were clean, nice views. We didn’t use the showers, so can’t comment on those.

Disliked: However, our arrival experience left a lot to be desired.

We got there around 9:30pm and saw a small sign instructing us to check in before pitching up. We followed the road in search of the check-in area, but there were no further signs or directions. After getting nowhere, we eventually decided to pitch up.

Minutes later, the owner arrived and immediately began telling us off for not checking in. We explained we tried but couldn’t find it, and his response was a sarcastic, “It’s the house with the chimney” — as if that were obvious, with no signage. He was angry and hostile from the start.

The whole interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive. A couple of clear signs and a more polite tone would’ve made a huge difference. Instead, we were met with attitude.

We won’t be returning. There are plenty of friendlier campsites around – I’d recommend choosing one of those instead.

Liked: Flat, mown, pick your own pitches.
Good views.
Decent showers.
Toilets were adequate for a basic site with facilities in each field.
Low cost.

Disliked: Pot wash at the house end of the site only had 2 sinks which was fine for our stay as the site wasn’t busy, but could be frustrating if it was more full. Don’t know if there were other facilities in other fields.

Non-electric grass and earth tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Friendly owners. Lovely hot showers that you don’t need to pay extra for. We like to camp in the bottom field so we just have a basic toilet block with no hot water but that suits us fine and means we don’t have to walk all the way through the fields to go to the toilet and can enjoy being in a field by a river where it’s usually a bit quieter. But can still walk up nearer the house to shower or use hot water to wash pots.
The location is just beautiful, surrounded by hills and beautiful countryside, the stream just running by its so relaxing. And the lovely Pen-y-Ghent in the not so distance is also a sight to behold! If you love walking it’s a great place to stay while doing the Yorkshire three peaks as the walk starts literally on the doorstep of the campsite. Also a short walk over the field there are two lovely little pubs. It really is such a lovely place we’ve been four times so far and will definitely be back again. I highly recommend trying the campsite for yourself! :-)

Disliked: Nothing

Liked: Lovely spacious campsite, lots of options to pitch your tent. REALLY clean toilets and shower block. Warm water to wash your pots and pans in, really makes a difference! Water points and bins spread throughout the fields, really handy and very clean fresh water. Really good location as-well

Liked: Spacious, good location. My little boys are train mad so the track next to the site was a huge hit!

Disliked: Lights didn't work in some of the toilets. Could do with a stool or something in the toilets.

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes). Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list. You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.
