Primitive grass and earth tent or trailer tent campsite
Liked Lovely campsite just a mile from the village. Great base for hiking the Three Peaks. Toilets were clean, nice views. We didn’t use the showers, so can’t comment on those.
Disliked However, our arrival experience left a lot to be desired.
We got there around 9:30pm and saw a small sign instructing us to check in before pitching up. We followed the road in search of the check-in area, but there were no further signs or directions. After getting nowhere, we eventually decided to pitch up.
Minutes later, the owner arrived and immediately began telling us off for not checking in. We explained we tried but couldn’t find it, and his response was a sarcastic, “It’s the house with the chimney” — as if that were obvious, with no signage. He was angry and hostile from the start.
The whole interaction felt unnecessarily aggressive. A couple of clear signs and a more polite tone would’ve made a huge difference. Instead, we were met with attitude.
We won’t be returning. There are plenty of friendlier campsites around – I’d recommend choosing one of those instead.
From the manager: This couple were found on site in a campervan closed up for the night. They made no attempt to contact reception by email or phone to ask if they could arrive after 9pm, to check if they could site a campervan on a grass tent pitch which they had booked or ask where to find reception. There were other campers about who I am sure would have advised them where to check in. Management would not have to make unnecessary visits to any pitch if the site rules were followed as per booking.
Do not stay here if you like sitting around a campfire chatting.
