General

  • Peaceful Yorkshire Dales site with views of Pen-y-Ghent
  • A 15-minute drive from Settle; steam train rides pass the site
  • Dog-friendly site within walking distance of three country pubs

Well, isn’t this a really rather fine rural setting – on the banks of the River Ribble and within easy rambling distance of restorative pints at one of Horton-in-Ribblesdale’s three country pubs: how fab...

Cragg Hill Farm is in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and the views from this peaceful place won’t let you forget that even a sec. Gaze in one direction to likely see Pen-y-Ghent towering over the site; turn the other way and you might just catch a glimpse of the Settle-Carlisle Railway trains wending their way through the scenic surrounds.

Settle is a 15-minute drive to the south; as well as being the launch point for train rides, it’s also a good place to source supermarket supplies (or have a swim or a game of golf if you’re shunning such mundanities as shopping). For other days out, it’s recommended you look not much further than roaming around the Yorkshire Dales – although you could also consider hitting the coast at Morecambe an hour’s drive away if you’re yearning for a bit of sea air.

Back at the farm, life is pretty laidback, with no noisome ents to interfere with the peace, just toilets, hot showers and a washing-up area to keep you and your kit clean.

Everything. The view and the location was perfect for a relaxing break away from madness. The facilities were basic but spotless and situated throughout the site so you were never too far from a toilet. Just a 20 minute walk to the pub and the our kids splashed about in the river for hours. The owners are lovely, they worked so hard keeping the site clean and well organised on top of running a farm, I don't know how they do it. Thanks for a great stay, we'll see you again!

Beautiful location next to the (very full) river with Pen-y-Ghent towering in the distance. Very wet when I arrived but boggy areas marked with cones and owner also advised best places to pitch. Plenty of room for everyone even when starting to get busy. Toilets more than adequate and free showers excellent. Park the car and enjoy plenty of walks from site. Pubs within easy walking distance. Watch out for aircraft on low-flying training!

    Disliked:

Some noise and music from large younger groups but tolerable.

Really like this campsite. Beautiful place and plenty of space. They have a few picnic benches dotted about so you could be lucky enough to grab one of them. The site has showers, a wash room and toilets, no shop or cafe like you get at some places but that's not a big deal. It's a great campsite if you are wanting to do the 3 peaks as it's a short walk to the official start. The lady that met us at reception was lovely. No light pollution so if its a clear night you will be able to see so many stars 🌟

Local attractions

This is a mighty fine part of the Yorkshire Dales National Park to be based in, as it’s within easy reach of several fab sights. Malham Cove and Malham Tarn, half an hour away by car, combine to make an excellent day’s walk; the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail (25 minutes’ drive) is another that’s worth walking. If it’s not walking weather, get underground at White Scar Cave (20 minutes) or Ingleborough Cave (35 minutes).

Not active enough? Those for whom Pen-y-Ghent is not so much scenery as a challenge can set out from the site for the climb to the 694-metre peak. Follow up by scaling slightly taller Ingleborough (also accessible on foot from the farm) and taller-still Whernside (15 minutes’ drive) to tick Yorkshire’s Three Peaks Challenge off your bucket list.

You may like a little sit down after all that (or instead…) and a fine place for that is in a seat on the Settle to Carlisle Railway, which you can board at the nearest station a mile away in Horton-in-Ribblesdale. Even if you’re not up for the ride, you may like to take in the view of the Ribblehead Viaduct (15 minutes), famed for many as the route taken by the Hogwarts Express.

Must see

  • Levens Hall & Gardens (21.2 miles)
  • Lancaster Castle (21.3 miles)
  • Sizergh Castle and Garden (21.7 miles)

  • Malham Tarn Estate (5.5 miles)
