  • Shepherds hut with spectacular views over Rosedale valley
  • Lots of walking trails pass the site, including the Rosedale Railway
  • Scenic tearoom garden serving up slices of homemade cake
Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut is a working hill farm tucked snugly at the head of Rosedale on the edge of the North York Moors. If you’re into tea and cake, then you’ll be well placed for both here, as the farm is famed among walkers for its viewsome tea garden, who go there for views over Rosedale valley and slices of proprietor Maggie’s homemade cake. The surrounds and skies here are made for gazing – peer across the moorland valley and settle back into your deckchair as the sun sets. Then, as night closes in, pull a blanket over your knees and stay cosily parked, for there are plenty of stars to spy too. When you’re feeling spritely, long ambles, road or mountain bike rides and horseback hacks are how to explore the land around the farm – if you’re more of a sedentary sort, birdwatching and wildlife spotting are popular alternative activities. The hut is comfy and warm with a woodburner to keep you toasty – in fact, while the rest of the year the area is popular with mountain bikers, during snowy weather the steep hills around here are spot on for speedy sledge rides. Whatever the weather, the pretty little arbour by the hut is a top spot to hang out in: you'll surely be snug here as you cosy up with a coffee or a glass of vino… The site has been kitted out thoughtfully with stuff that’s handy for outdoorsy types, like a utility room with washers and dryers, as well as facilities to repair and lock up bikes; and handily for horsey peeps, the hut sits in its own paddock too, providing ample space for horses to stay. Next to the hut is a wetroom with toilet and shower, plus a standard fridge, worktops and a large sink. Breakfast is included in the stay.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: Our host, Maggie, was amazing!! Very kind, welcoming and helpful throughout our stay. The Shepherds Hut is beautiful, laid out in a great setting. The farm is lovely and the tea room too. We loved our stay and will be booking again. We highly recommend this stay if you’re looking for that rural, quiet getaway. We aren’t big walkers but the disused railway line to the pub was well worth the walk. You can drive too and there is parking just outside the hut.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: Absolutely beautiful, and Maggie went above and beyond. It was really scenic, peaceful and relaxing. Surrounded by stunning views and nature. She was extremely hospitable and friendly. Everything was clean, well kept and homely and we would defiantly come again. Thank you so much for accommodating us, it was an absolute pleasure to stay at the shepherds hut. The sheep’s had also just also lambed which was a bonus, they were super cute. Maggie and her family were happy to show them to us. The breakfast was absolutely delicious and she went above and beyond on all counts. We had a wonderful weekend, thank you so much again and wish all the best for the future. Will definitely be recommending to all our family and friends

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: Great place to stay, cosy hut with comfy double bed. Host was very friendly and helpful. Everything provided from towels to wood for the burner. Maggie even set the burner going before we arrived, so hut was already toasty. Clean and maintained bathroom facilities, very close to hut. Homecooked breakfast was great. Beautiful location, stunning views. Will likely be booking again.

Disliked: Wifi didn't quite reach the hut enough, but didn't really impact our stay. Heard a lot of dogs barking, but didn't go on for long?

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: Very nice host with great breakfast.

Disliked: Shower temperature varied from freezing to steaming hot. Hut was a little small for two people.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you . It’s a shame you didn’t mention the shower while here as I would happily have sorted this for you. Sometimes people alter the settings and it just needs rebooting. The shower is an excellent one . Size of hut is as described but I think you were unsure what a shepherds hut was really. Perhaps you don’t have them in America.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: A beautiful setting with an excellent host. This lovely shepherds hut was set in the north Yorkshire moors with a lovely cooked breakfast in with the price, which we ate in a tearoom .Which is opened later in the morning serving a wonderful selection of home baked treats cooked by the loveliest of hosts called Margaret . She made us feel very welcome and was full of lots of knowledge about the surrounding area and walks . Margaret was happy to speak with us but then also to leave us to enjoy our stay. We were in a lovely clean shepherds hut with everything we needed including a toilet and shower room next to it for our two night stay with local pubs nearby to enjoy a drink and a nice meal. We would highly recommend this place and can’t wait to return.

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: The shepherds hut was cute and quirky which is what we were after. The catering facilities were minimal, the bathroom and toilet separate but that was all part of the charm. The scenery was breathtaking and the setting peaceful and relaxing. Maggie was a lovely host- approachable and friendly but also left us alone. The tea shop on the farm was fabulous

From the manager: Thank you it was lovely to meet you . Catering facilities are what are advertised. Microwave bbq and utility and you did get more free china than I expected!

Rosedale Light shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful peaceful retreat. Maggie was a lovely host who made sure we had what we needed. Tasty breakfast in the morning too.

Disliked: Not being able to have an outdoor fire. No chiminea as per pics but a minor thing.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you pleasure. Even with the rain there is a red fire warning high alert so open fires are too dangerous. Not sure where the chiminea is in picture wonder if it’s a really old one will have a look for it and remove if applicable. We do state no open fires but bbq is fine !!

Local attractions

Rosedale is a serene and spectacular spot in the midst of the North York Moors National Park; Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut lies right at the top of Rosedale valley on the eastern side, and is passed by several walking trails (like along the Rosedale Railway) for easy access to the surrounding countryside. Should your fancy be a day trip to somewhere historic, York and its famed cathedral and Jorvik Viking Centre is just over an hour south of the site. The coast is close enough for a spin out to too, reachable in around 45 minutes by car: head to Whitby and sample a scoop of its famed blackcurrant and liquorice ice cream.
