Lodges in Pickering

This popular market town in England’s North East is a fine place to base yourself when exploring the North York Moors National Park’s countryside and coast. You can settle into a lodge in Pickering, then explore its storied streets and alleyways before jumping on a heritage train through the local scenery. Make sure not to miss market day, though – this treat for the senses pops up every Monday.

Book a lodge in Pickering and you can also easily visit the town's renowned castle, church and river. Our selection includes everything from comfy glamping pods for couples to larger cabins that fit the whole family. And whether you want to stick to a budget or level up on luxury, there’s just the right type of accommodation to suit.

Where you should stay in Pickering

  • The North York Moors are wonderful for kids, so we'd recommend finding a child-friendly lodge in Pickering for your next break. Take young travellers to local attractions like the town's jump park, pump track and nature play area, then venture a touch further afield for the rides at Flamingo Land theme park.

  • To chug through the countryside by train, stay close to the starting point of the 24-mile-long North Yorkshire Moors Railway. You can jump on board close to your Pickering lodge and travel to Whitby at the seaside for the sandy beaches, gothic abbey and traditional harbour. Pause at Goathland enroute for a glimpse of the 70-foot Mallyan Spout Waterfall, the tallest in the North York Moors.

  • With so much spectacular scenery around town, Pickering is also a favourite of furry family members. Opt for a dog-friendly lodge and head on walkies amid the leafy trees at Cropton Forest. You can stop at the local microbrewery to reward yourself with a locally brewed ale after roams.

  • Alternatively, why not settle down near the ruined castle and walled garden in Helmsley, around a 20-minute drive west of Pickering? Or choose a lodge in the lesser-known Howardian Hills, home to the stately Castle Howard country estate?

What you can do in Pickering

  • History fans will appreciate Pickering’s medieval castle, a 13th-century structure used as a royal hunting lodge, as well as the Saxon church’s colourful 15th-century wall paintings.

  • A little outside town, head to the Cawthorn Roman Camps to take in a series of fortifications built 20 centuries ago. Or learn about the more recent past at the Beck Isle Museum of Rural Life, a living complex dedicated to the Victorian period with authentically recreated blacksmiths, barbers and hardware shops.

  • Pack a picnic at your Pickering lodge and head to the National Trust’s Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping to see a series of stones in strange shapes, eroded by the weather over thousands of years. Also just east of town are the Hole of Horcum and Dalby Forest, two other pretty places for a walk in nature.

  • There’s also plenty to do at the coast, around half an hour’s drive from your lodge in Pickering. Take a wander on the Cleveland Way, which runs for 110 miles and passes seal-studded coves, red-roofed coastal villages and historical harbours. Or visit lively resorts like Scarborough for fairground rides and fish 'n' chips on the seafront.
