  • Shepherds hut with spectacular views over Rosedale valley
  • Lots of walking trails pass the site, including the Rosedale Railway
  • Scenic tearoom garden serving up slices of homemade cake

Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut is a working hill farm tucked at the head of Rosedale on the edge of the North York Moors. If you’re into tea and sweet stuff, then you’ll be well placed for both here, as the farm is famed among walkers for its viewsome tea garden, who go there for views over Rosedale valley and slices of proprietor Maggie’s homemade cake.

The surrounds and skies here are made for gazing – peer across the moorland valley and settle back into your deck chair as the sun sets during daylight hours, and as night closes in, pull a blanket over your knees and stay cosily parked, for there’s plenty of stars to spy too.

When you’re feeling spritely, long ambles, road or mountain bike rides and horseback hacks are how to explore the land around the farm – if you’re more of a sedentary sort, birdwatching and wildlife spotting are an alternative activity option popular with peeps who visit the farm.

The hut is comfy and warm with a woodburner to keep you toasty in chillier climes – in fact, while the rest of the year the area is popular with mountain bikers, during snowy weather the steep hills around here are spot on for speedy sledge rides.

The site has been kitted out thoughtfully with stuff that’s handy for outdoorsy types, like a utility room with washers and dryers for restoring the order of muddy outdoor gear, as well as facilities to repair and lock up bikes; and handily for horsey peeps, the hut sits in its own paddock too, providing ample space for horses to stay.

In the mornings, rise to breakfasts comprising locally sourced fodder like Whitby kippers and local eggs and accompanied by the same homemade bread served up at Maggie’s tea garden. Vegan, gluten free and dairy free diets are all catered for.

What a lovely, cosy shepherds' hut set in the most peaceful location. We stayed for 6 nights and there is still so much more to explore. The accommodation was excellent. Clean, cosy and very warm. Maggie and her family did so much to make us all feel welcome. Our 9 year old son had a fantastic time playing in the stream and helping to care for the pet lambs. He would have liked to stay! The breakfasts were delicious. Can't recommend highly enough. Thank you Maggie for all the thoughtful little extras which really did make such a difference. We would love to return again if you would have us all back.

The location was beautiful and peaceful, and the hut was cosy, comfortable and well equipt. Maggie, the owner, was friendly and welcoming and provided us with a delicious breakfast in the morning. We loved the stunning scenery of Rosedale and enjoyed a breathtaking walk that began on the doorstep. My daughter loved being introduced and interacting with the new lambs on the farm. An amazing outdoors experience!

Just come back from 3 amazing days at Dale Head Farm. The Sheperd's hut is just so cool, the log burner keeping the hut warm the whole time we were there, even with 4 inches of snow, and below zero most of the time.
Maggie and Chris were extremely welcoming and friendly. The very rustic coffee shop with a BIG log burner (fully fired up every morning), was the perfect setting for Maggie's amazing cooked breakfast!
If you want a taste of real Yorkshire, then you'd be hard pushed to experience it better else where. The simplicity of the Shepherd's Hut, in the very rural yet historic surroundings of Dale Head Farm, is the perfect escape from the rat race.
Easy access to a wide variant of beautiful walks. Surrounded in the near locality, by outstanding examples of traditional Yorkshire communities. Quirky and quaint pubs, genuinely sincere and warm people, with amazing food as standard.
    We will absolutely be back.
    Spring time in the Dales...

    On the down side...

While we were there, we were most disappointed when we were informed that we would NOT be snowed in. Even with 4-5 inches of snow we were confidently informed that we would be able to leave Dale Head Farm. We were hoping that we may have been snowed in, and would have had to stay a few more days!

Really enjoyed our stay in the shepherds hut, the accomodation was lovely and so different to anywhere we have stayed before. The surroundings are so tranquil and the hut is situated in the countryside with amazing views. The hut itself is of a high standard, very cosy and welcoming, the log burner is an added bonus we managed a very peaceful nights sleep which is rare when we stay elsewhere. The hosts Maggie and family are wonderful, she went above and beyond our expectations to make our stay enjoyable and ensured we had everything we needed and more!. The breakfast in the morning was faultless! Really quality local ingredients and Maggie's baking alone is well worth the trip! We enjoyed our stay so much we have booked another two nights here and we are very much looking forward to it. Our only negative is that we didnt try one of maggies famous jam and cream scones! Hopefully next time!

Local attractions

Rosedale is a serene and spectacular spot in the midst of the North York Moors National Park; Dale Head Farm Shepherds Hut lies right at the top of Rosedale valley on the eastern side, and is passed by several walking trails (like along the Rosedale Railway) for easy access to the surrounding countryside.

Should your fancy be a day trip to somewhere historic, York and its famed cathedral and Jorvik Viking Centre is just over an hour south of the site.

The coast is close enough for a spin out to too, reachable in around 45 minutes by car: head to Whitby and sample a scoop of its famed blackcurrant and liquorice ice cream.
