Wild Riverside Camping: The path going to the Rocks beach

General

  • Remote and peaceful site with views over the River Deben estuary
  • On a working farm a 15-minute drive from Sutton Hoo and Woodbridge
  • Private river beach access; veg and fish boxes available to preorder

Hoping to hide out in a remote and peaceful place on your next break? Go to ground at Wild Riverside Camping, a working farm in Suffolk with exceptional views out over an estuary.

Come here to bask on the beach, cycle through the countryside and watch the birds fly through the sky; the park is a mile from the nearest public road and has private access to the River Deben sandy banks, so it’s a top spot for getting off the grid.

Set in the Suffolk Coast & Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s also stunning. Wherever you wander – whether down to the estuary for far-reaching views over the large expanse of water or to All Saints Church Ramsholt (10 minutes’ stroll from the farm), it’s worth making sure you’re carrying your camera.

Bring a picnic too: veg boxes and fish can be preordered from the farm (use the contact information provided in your booking details to get in touch in advance) and staples are stocked at the village shop in Alderton (10 minutes’ drive). If you’d rather stroll for a seafood supper at a riverside pub with views out over the water, there’s one a couple of miles from the park.

And as for local landmarks? A tiny bit further out is Sutton Hoo (15 minutes’ drive), famed for being the site of two early-medieval burial grounds (so famed, in fact, that Netflix featured it in the film The Dig – and if some scenes from that look a little familiar that's because parts of it were shot on this very farm…)

Please note

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

This is a great site with basic amenities for a weekend. Lovely scenery with easy access to the riverbank and a great pub about 40 mins walk away.

We stayed as a group of three families, but were easily able to find space to all pitch close to each other. All the other campers were pretty quiet and there was no trouble on site.

I'd happily go back again to this site.

Lovely site, so beautiful and peaceful with stunning views of the countryside with great animal listening and watching to be done. Brilliant walks nearby with a fab pub! The farmers who run the site are so lovely and helpful, we will be back!

    Disliked:

It is a shame there are no showers, we would have stayed much longer if that was the case. We also got told we were on the adults only field but on the last night a very loud family with very young screaming children decided to camp right next to our tent but we assumed that was more the family not pitching where they were told as opposed to the farmer’s fault

From the manager...

Thank you for this review, so helpful to have feedback .
We had a very busy weekend due to the bank holiday and the fact we had rolled some guests on from the previous wet weekend! We really hoped that everyone had a lovely time and weve had lovely, positive comments. The weather was fabulous and Ramsholt certainly is looking so beautiful after a wet Spring . Lots of Wildlife on the move and lots of young to be spotted. I hope you saw the Otters?
We have made a few adjustments to how we operate since last weekend after a Simper family de brief ! we have now stated in our welcome emails that paddocks 1 and 2 are very quiet areas and we have ensured we have office opening times so that we can be keeping up with essential farm chores and in the office to assist guests!
we do look forward to welcoming you again.

    Free and easy camping style
Wild river camping site split into multiple ‘paddocks’ even the furthest is about a 3-5 min walk to the river / beech area
Portaloos were clean and seemed to be plenty for the number of people on site.
Friday evening / night was exactly what I was after. Peaceful, respectful campers. Had a great view of the stars.
They also sell wood and offer fire pits / BBQs for hire.
The site is on a gentle slope, but nothing too drastic.

    Disliked:

Nothing to do with the site owners.
The guidance is about as clear as it can be. However people love a bright light and even with all the space in the world insist on camping right up close!! And then proceed to witter on about how little Johnnie /Janie won most shots on goal this morning as if talking on a bad phone connection :-)
That said I probably will be back. But will try out the wild wood camping pitches next time.

Absolutely fantastic, with the beach and river side walks the other side of the campsite you can arrive, put up your tent and truly relax. I’d put this site off, despite the photos (all of which are true, in fact it’s even better in real life) because of the price but then I realised by the time I drive to a beach each day and pay for parking this campsite is actually cheaper - and it was! I’d also read of lots of tents, but I timed it well as I was the only tent - true wild camping. With talk of only half the number of tents next year you’ll have to race me to a space because I’ll definitely be back!

My dog and I spent 3 nights here in our small tent. It is a very basic setup on a farmers field right next to the River Deben. It is very remote, no close shops and only accessed through long country roads, and onsite on unpaved roads- my tiny old micra didn't have problems though. On the second morning horses were put in the field next to us without warning, it took a while to my pup to settle but a yummy chew ensured no problems. As it is very basic, there is no plumbing. Portaloos and water tanks on palettes are the only facilities offered. This was fine for us, although I didn't trust the water so I only used it after boiling it. The walks accessed from the site were lovely- the river trail and the beach in the other direction. I wish I'd remembered to bring my binoculars! In all, it is what it said on the description, very basic wild riverside camping!

Having to bash tent pegs and kneel in clumps of thistles. Could something be done to improve pitch quality. Some nice hardy grasses.. wild grasses be encouraged to grow to be aesthetically pleasing to eye.

Local attractions

Stop by Sutton Hoo while at this park: the National Trust-protected site is incredibly interesting – it’s the home of two early medieval burial grounds dating back between the 6th to 7th centuries. Archaeologists have been excavating the area since the 1930s, and some of the better finds, like a funerary ship and an opulent Anglo-Saxon helmet are on display in London’s esteemed British Museum.

The nearby riverside town of Woodbridge, which has restaurants, shops and a museum to poke around, is also worth a wander. Sip coffee on the Quayside, then roam by the water’s edge towards the old Tide Mill.

Stroll around the seaside town of Aldeburgh too (40 minutes' drive), a pretty place with a shingle beach and a variety of boutiques selling antiques and arts. Drop by Snape Maltings (half an hour from the site) while you’re in the area as well for a glimpse of the galleries and a renowned concert hall.
