Around the site

General

  • Peaceful adults-only site with dogs allowed
  • A 15-minute drive from Framlingham and 30 minutes from Ipswich
  • Shared kitchen, indoor seating, honesty shop; firepits on each pitch

No one could blame you for wanting a break from the kids, whether they’re your own or just the neighbourhood ones getting underfoot... If that calming escape is calling then make your way to Brick Kiln Campsite, an adults-only site less than five minutes’ drive from the small Suffolk village of Campsea Ashe.

In a rural spot, there’s little around this quiet spot but fields. The site’s not set up for electric – though plugs for charging phones can be accessed if going without is a problem – so the outside world may struggle to intrude, and a no-music (other than birdsong, of course) rule should ensure that reading hours and slumbers go undisturbed.

Eats are easily sorted without leaving this placid paradise: every pitch has a firepit, and barbecues can be hired on site for more traditional meals. Damper hours can be spent in the converted stable, with its shared kitchen and small honesty shop, and when cooking is to be avoided altogether it’s a 10-minute walk across fields to the nearest pub serving food.

For forays off site, it’s less than 10 minutes from base to Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – where wildlife spotting, leisurely wanders and seaside strolls are all to be had – and five minutes to the nearest golf course for those who find peace on the tees.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Great site. Spacious. Loved the built-in fire pits and the availability of logs and kindling.
The kettle, toaster & microwave was a really nice touch.
Toilets and showers were spotless. Lovely hand soap and hand creams too.
We have a lovely time. I would recommend this site. And hopefully, return next year.

A bit too far to walk to the pub. But it was actually really nice opening the wine and sitting around the fire.

Beautiful campsite. Peaceful. Plenty of space between pitches. Good facilities. Free unisex showers/toilets with hairdryers, and never had to queue. Great washing up area with fridge/freezer, kettle, microwaves and kitchen equipment to borrow. There's also a room to relax in if there's bad weather. Firepit by each pitch and wood to buy on-site. Owners were very helpful and friendly too.

This campsite needs to decide what it is.04/09/2019

Friendly host, some nice extra touches (kitchen facilities, fridge/freezer).

    Disliked:

I think this campsite needs to decide what it is. We were attracted to stay due to the fact that Brick Kiln promotes itself as an 'adult only' campsite. However, the owner (Tina) did state that there would be some families staying over the bank holiday weekend. The information on the website informed us that this would be in a separate field and would have minimal impact on those expecting an adult-only feel. This was completely untrue. We returned to the campsite on the Friday evening to find children cycling up and down the adult-only field and doing what kids do - being noisy. I found this very stressful indeed and the impact was not minimal. We spoke to Tina's mother that evening and she told us that the families had been informed that the children should remain in the field allocated for their use, but to be honest that isn't possible, is it? Children are inquisitive and loud.

Other gripes would be that we felt like sardines - I suspect that campers would not be so cramped in at times when it was not a bank holiday; limited shower/toilet facilities - just two single toilets, two showers and one shared toilet/shower - very definitely not enough for the number of people staying over the bank holiday weekend (my partner had children hammering on the toilet wanting to use it at one point); due to the numbers of campers very poor water pressure in the showers so either no water or cold water.

This campsite was probably one of the most expensive we have stayed on (£72 for three nights) and I feel that the 'adult only' tag is misleading. We did not have the nice, relaxed camping trip we had hoped for and for that reason would not return.

From the manager...

I am very sorry and sad to read your review. You stayed during August Bank Holiday and we did make it clear via PitchUp that this would be one of the weekends where families would be staying. You may not be aware that up until last year, I had been running the site as a family site and some of my regular families had booked this August Bank Holiday before I made the decision to turn the site into Adult Only earlier this year. I simply did not have the heart to turn them away hence the combination of both adults and families on this particular weekend. I would like to point out though that out of my 30 pitches, I only let 5 to families and they were in a different field to yourselves. We had a maximum of 10 young children on site. Except for Friday afternoon, I was on site all weekend. My mother did have to tell the children on their arrival to remain in 'their' field, and they did this. Obviously, they had to access the toilets and kitchen and these are centrally located. I do have two swings in the field and these have been there for years when my children were small and are concreted into the ground - making them difficult to remove. Due to it being beautiful weather, most campers were off site throughout the weekend and I was unaware of any 'trouble' on site. I was on site throughout the entire weekend and not one camper came to see me to tell me of poor running showers, cramped space, or noisy children. My phone number is clearly displayed too and I had my phone on me at all times but no one rang either with any complaints. Because I was constantly cleaning toilets - you may have mistaken me for the cleaner and not the owner! I am sorry you felt cramped and I am unsure why you would have done as all pitches at 10m x8m and clearly marked. No one should have encroached your pitch and I am very sorry if they did. If you had come to see me, I would have sorted this out. I work hard to ensure that all campers have a happy experience here, but if I only hear about complaints after their stay - there is little I can do. Moving forward, the site is now adult only and there will no longer be family friendly weekends. I do hope you may consider returning and I would welcome you back. However, August Bank Holiday for all campsites is one of the busiest of the year and even without children, total peace cannot always be guaranteed. It might be an idea to camp either just before or just after this weekend when peace can be guaranteed.

Just back from a wonderful week at Brick Kiln . On arrival we were greeted by the wonderful owner of the site who couldn't do enough for is during our stay. The site is beautifully kept and the tent pitches are a fantastic size . There is an option of a more private field which we chose and it was perfect. The facilities are very good with special little touches to make your stay even more enjoyable.
We had a really relaxing week and will definitely be back again next year. Thank you for making our holiday very special

It was suppose to be adult only not true one bit we spent the whole bank holiday weekend with loads of kids playing running up and down (like children do) but if i wanted to book in with chilldren i would have done.

From the manager...

I am sorry and sad to read your review. You did email me to ask for your money back after your stay as you hadn't realised that children would be on site. We had made it clear through pitchup that August Bank Holiday would be one weekend where families would be welcome. There were 5 pitches booked to families, out of 30 pitches in total on site and there were 10 young children here. We pitched them in the bottom field and away from other adult only campers. I do wish you had come to see me during your stay here to tell me how you felt. Not only do I live on site - I was constantly on site that particular weekend but no one came to see me to tell me that they were unhappy about anything. There is very little I can do to rectify the situation after the event, except to say how sorry I am that you didn't enjoy your weekend and how sorry I am that you decided to leave a poor review. I did state in my email to you, before your review, that I would welcome you back and I mean this. The site is now an adult only site with no family friendly weekends. You will also see that my Pitchup policy is that complaints do need to flagged up during your stay here, and not afterwards. August Bank Holiday is one of the busiest weekends of the camping year and perhaps it may have been better not to have booked this weekend when families were going to be on site also.

From the manager...

Thank you for your kind comments and I am glad you enjoyed the benefit of a fridge/freezer and kettle. Did you find the toaster and microwave! Re the shower and wifi; I am afraid there is a 'price' to pay for living in the middle of the countryside! Water pressure can be low and wi-fi sometimes disappears. It is frustrating - I know. But I personally weigh this up with the lovely peace and quiet here and feel it is a small price to pay! Sometimes, when I have been cleaning the facilities, I do find campers in the kitchen with the hot tap running freely as they wash up - even though I provide washing up bowls. And sometimes I have found taps left on - mistakenly, I am sure - in the basins. This does not help the system as you can imagine. The showers are on a timer to encourage campers to limit time within the shower to preserve the water - but this doesn't always have the desired affect - and I imagine, (especially if you are female and washing long hair - which would be me!), that a lot of water can be used. The system recovers quickly though. Anyone experiencing difficulties with showers whilst here can come and see me. I have a shower next to the house which uses a different system. Anyone experiencing difficulties with wi-fi - again, do come and see me. Standing closer to the house will help. I can also highly recommend the Farmcafe at Marlesford and also The Station House in Campsea Ashe. Both have free access to wi-fi and offer excellent food, snacks and coffee whilst you work. I look forward to welcoming you back and hope my comments help others.

Access to the A12 yet remarkably remote, turned off the main road into the lane leading to the campsite. Your far enough away to lose the sound of the traffic but only a minute or so to the main road. Great location if you intend to travel out each day but also looking for a taste of suffolk countryside
Friendly knowledgeable host/owner, family have farmed the area for any years so had all the answers to our questions.
Clean showers and toilets, also a kitchen area with all mod cons for food prep, washing up etc. The shared fridge was great use too.
Fire pits for that roaring camp fire + plenty of fuel for sale
Zero light pollution, head here if you want to see lots and lots and lots of stars.
Only 1.5 fields or a casual 10 minute walk to the local pub!

Local attractions

Explores of this area are a cinch for pedallers: a trip to nearby Rendlesham (a 10-minute drive) should sort wheels, and the rental place even delivers to site. Once a ride is secured, head along to Rendlesham Forest, a 15-minute drive or 25-minute cycle away, to zip along bike paths through the 1,500 hectare woodland.

There’s plenty of history hereabouts to dive into too. The site’s 15 minutes from Framlingham Castle and the Anglo-Saxon king’s ship burial ground at Sutton Hoo, 35 minutes from the stunning famed Victorian pier in Southwold, and 45 minutes from Norfolk and Suffolk Aviation Museum. Even closer at hand, it’s less than five minutes to Marlesford Mills Antiques Centre, if bargain hunting appeals.

On warmer days, make tracks for the seaside. The nearest shingle beach is at Aldeburgh, and it’s 35 minutes to the sandy, pebbled stretch at Southwold (stick around here for brewery and distillery tours, and shopping). For a proper sandy beach though, Lowestoft is a must – it’s 50 minutes from base by car, or an hour on the train from the station five minutes’ drive from the site.

Those seeking days among museums, shops, galleries and restaurants should take those tracks in the direction of Ipswich instead, half an hour’s train journey away or just under 30 minutes by car.
