General

  • Wild camping pitches set within woodland areas
  • Hidden setting in a wildlife haven
  • Local village a short walk away

Get into the wilderness and camp under the stars at Thurstons Farm, a peaceful place to enjoy the countryside.

The site has a handful of camping pitches within a wilderness area just outside the main grounds of the farmhouse, so you can roam around the outdoors within the self-sown woodland, surrounding ponds and nature. You'll still have modern running water, toilet facilities and wifi, all just off the site near the main house. (There are no showers, so please bring your own portable one.)

Thurstons Farm is a hidden woodland playground, surrounded by natural landscapes and rare wildlife including great-crested newts and barn owls. It's also well set: even though it's in the middle of nowhere: the local village is a short walk away; the site is easy to find from the A12, and the nearest shops, pubs and supermarkets are accessible in Saxmundham.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 14 consecutive nights.

There is no water point or flushing facilities in the camping field. Access to these are across the road at the main house. However, there is a compost toilet within the camping field.

In order to keep the area wild as well as safe for wildlife, car parking is not permitted by the pitches.

The campsites carved out of the forest were really magical, it felt like a real adventure to walk the little paths to the site. Everything was very well run and all the details were readily available. It was a total pleasure to sit by the fire pit under the stars and have nocturnal encounters with hedghogs and hear the owls. Its definitely somewhere I'd highly recommend and would certainly go back there. The owners were also very pleasant, helpful and well informed about the surrounding area. It was a real pleasure!

A secluded pitch in a wild setting 08/08/2017

It was lovely to find a site where all the pitches are surrounded by trees and long grass. It is a large area, but with only five pitches, each of them secluded. At night we saw hedgehogs scampering across the paths, and in the morning we awoke to the sounds of birds in the trees.

Water is available at the house just across the lane, so bring a water bottle.

There's also a flushing loo at the house, but the compost toilet at the site was well constructed and clean.

We were delayed arriving but the owner gave us a warm welcome despite the late hour.

Peaceful escape, back to basics camping with wildlife. 12/07/2017

It was a beautiful location. In the middle of nowhere with just birds and the wind. Very simple facilities - a compost loo 15 seconds walk away and a tap and flushing loo about 2 minutes if you really wanted to. Loved it. Great views. Fire wood available with a fire pit at the site. This was exactly what we were after. As close to wild camping before actually doing it.

Beautiful gardens and we saw one of their owls. We met Ginny and she was so friendly and helpful.

It was only a short drive from Dunwich, Aldeburgh and Saxmundham.

    Disliked:

Our ground/pitch was a bit bobbly which made for a little uncomfortable sleeping but we had the choice of any campsite so that was on us.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for ourselves this is much appreciated.
Also thanks for the feedback on my mum (Ginny) she was filling in for me on the weekend as I was away and I am pleased she was able to help and check you in.
As wild camping I am afraid the moles do tend to play a little bit of havoc with the ground and soil therefore there can be some humps and bumps in our pitches.
Thanks for coming to stay and we hope you will visit us again in future.

Simple small site, secluded individual small pitches with a path from grass carpack with well maintained compost loo. A great place to pitch for a night or two and explore the coastal area of Suffolk - some nice garden/field walking on hand.

Water point / sink is a fair bit away (but we knew, and were able to get water as a result). Received a very warm, friendly welcome. Will be returning.

    Disliked:

    Nothing.

From the manager...

Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us here at Thurstons.
We do apologise about the distance of the water point but due to our aim on keeping the camping site as wild as possible we are unable to put a clean water supply directly to the camping field. I will however ensure that our details on site are clear about the distance of our supply and further details on the site.
Many Thanks

Back-to-basics, simple camping with a heart 06/06/2017

Thurston's Farm campsite has absolutely everything that we were looking for - very little at all! We'll be back as soon as we can squeeze in another few days away.

The campsite has no facilities to speak of; just tidy pitches in a natural setting with thoughtful breathing space left between . Bring everything you need for your stay, and leave everything just how you found it (including my nice pokey fire stick hidden in the ditch...) The main farm house is a couple of hundred yards away with a tap, a toilet, maps and WiFi that you're welcome to piggyback on.

But the real attraction here is that you need to build your own camp and hunt out your own entertainment. Apart from one very nicely kept compost loo and somewhere to leave your car, there's nothing at all at the campsite itself apart from a neatly mowed path to the five pitches - perfect. If you're looking for a peaceful spot to light a fire and recharge under the stars with like-minded campers 'somewhere over there', then Thurston's might be for you. It's wet wipes not showers here, and all the better for it.

I'm always delighted to find a site that is is just happy to provide a simple camping experience with no ambition to start plumbing, building and glamping. This part of the world is well-served with many excellent sites full of teepees, yurts and shepherd huts if that's what you fancy, but sometimes a patch of grass and a couple of trees to sling a tarp in simply cannot be beaten.

Site manager Amy couldn't be more accommodating and obviously understands her customers perfectly. Crucially, she completely 'gets' why less is sometimes so much more. For a back-to-basics 'wild camping' experience without all the sneaky undercover work, Thurston's is great. Please don't change!

I'm not keen on leaving a glowing review really, in case I can't get a spot next time. Don't come, you'll hate it :)

Again many thanks for your review.

Local attractions

Some of Suffolk's finest attractions are close by.

For wildlife fans, RSPB Minsmere Nature Reserve is not far away. A footpath runs along the land through Thurstons Farm and the owners have route maps should you wish to walk from the barn itself.

There are miles of coastal path around the area as well, with forest tracks, country lanes and cycle paths. There's plenty of storage space for bikes if you're bringing your wheels.

The small towns around the coastline have plenty to offer even on a rainy day, with piers, award-winning fish and chip shops and plenty of seaside boutiques to pick up souvenirs.

Other attractions include Dunwich Beach and Heath National Trust, a rare habitat home to special species such as the Dartford warbler, nightjar, woodlark, ant-lion, adders and more. Orford Ness National Nature Reserve National Trust is an important nature reserve with unusual buildings making a scenic landscape.

Framlingham Castle was a place of refuge for Mary Tudor and there's plenty to discover here while walking the walls and viewing the exhibitions. Orford Castle is also not far away: this 12th-century stronghold has many passageways and chambers to explore on your visit. Leiston Abbey is instead one of Suffolk’s impressive monastic ruins with spectacular features.

For a bit of shopping, Snape Maltings has a selection of shops, activities and places to eat and drink beside the Alde river.
