Nightingale lodge with private veranda

  • Quiet adults-only caravan park in a Suffolk forest location
  • A 10-minute drive from Bury St Edmunds and an hour from the coast
  • Next door to forest, West Stow Country Park and Anglo-Saxon village
This peaceful adults-only site has direct access to acres of green space, including Kings Forest and West Stow Country Park. With walks along the river Lark also on offer close by, there's little wonder that Kings Forest Caravan Park is held in such high regard among caravanners, who appreciate the peace and quiet of the place and the dog-friendly site rules. Part of a working farm called Wideham Farm, Kings Forest Caravan Park has smart stable facilities for visiting horses. The adjacent forest and the surrounding Suffolk countryside make excellent turf for hacking across too. They’re just as good for walking and pedalling, and with direct access to the forest, woodland wanderings and wildlife encounters are close to hand; look out for fallow deer, wild foxgloves and kestrels swooping overhead. Plus, the Suffolk Wildlife Trust at Lackford Lakes is just a five-minute drive away for conservation fans. This is a prime position to relax in too: peace and quiet are highly prized out here, and the proprietors ask everyone to kindly keep it down after 10pm… the horses need their beauty sleep…

Electric grass pitch

Liked Big pitches on level well drained land. Fantastic facilities and the owners/managers are absolutely lovely. Mostly motorhomes/caravans/campervans but tents allowed too. Grass is short and easy to pitch on. Lots of water points dotted about the perimeter. There’s even a freely accessible freezer for cold packs. Showers and toilets are big, modern, private and immaculately clean.
Nice quiet site surrounded by woodland and nature. We’ll definitely be back.

Disliked Nothing at all.

Liked Nice, tidy, orderly campsite. Owners are always checking on things.

Disliked Would be nice to have a bug screen in the pod so I could crack the window and a curtain for the little window would be nice

Local attractions

A walk away, West Stow Country Park is a top spot for Suffolk strolls and rides, with a pair of hides for birdwatching and whole platoons of wildlife gathering on the lake and along the River Lark. As an added bonus, there’s a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village where you can see how life was way back in the Dark Ages. The ancient market town of Bury St Edmunds is 10 minutes’ drive away if you’re minded to continue the historical theme: medieval Moyse’s Hall is home to a fab museum, while Ickworth House, built in neoclassical style for the earls of Bristol, is a splendid country house. After that, head on to the half-timbered, brightly hued cottages of Lavenham, half an hour away. There’s wildlife aplenty around here too, and trails to spot it at Cavenham Heath National Nature Reserve (15 minutes): blue tits and woodpeckers are often seen in the woods, while on the heath, lizards, adders and stone curlews flit around the remains of World War II defences. More exotic residents can be met at Banham Zoo (40 minutes), from Bactrian camels to silvery marmosets and gelada baboons, and seals can sometimes be spotted from the cliffs and beach at Felixstowe, an hour away. Even without glimpses of its whiskered marine mammals, the seaside town makes a top day trip, with beach walks, harbour cruises and tours of 18th-century Landguard Fort finished off with fish and chips.
