Bardwell Manor Equestrian Centre: View from tent

General

  • On a working equestrian centre 15 minutes' drive from Bury St Edmunds
  • Lessons and rides for ages five and up, including for beginners
  • Modern heated shower room, toilets and launderette

Horsey guests, non-horsey guests, non-horsey guests hoping to be transformed into horsey guests… all sorts of visitors are welcome to stay at Bardwell Manor Equestrian Centre, a friendly site within a riding centre 20 minutes’ walk from the village of Ixworth and 20 minutes’ drive from Bury St Edmunds.

Experienced riders champing at the bit to set off into the Suffolk countryside can sign up for various hacks here, and lessons can be booked as well – for adults and kids aged five and above. You'll need to book ahead though, to make sure they'll be able to fit you in.

Actually (whisper it…) not all that fussed by all the equestrian activity? It’s possible you may be converted – but even if you’re not, this is a splendid spot for a Suffolk break. The riding centre is set well back from the road and the site has just a handful of pitches – they’re next to an orchard and surrounded by horses grazing in the fields, so you should be in for a peaceful stay.

With all this countryside roaming to be done (on horseback, on foot or on two wheels as you wish) it’s entirely possible you’ll end up a bit mucky at some stage. That situation doesn’t have to last long, as the site has a modern heated shower room, and a laundry room where a washing machine and tumble dryer can be used for a small extra charge.

Very friendly staff on arrival. It’s a basic pitch next to fields filled with horses which was great for my two girls ( 10&7 ) who could watch the horses and riding lessons from their beds. Back to nature!

It was a lovely little hideaway with views that got my two girls off their iPads and playing outside. Got my vote!

    Would definitely return.

    Disliked:

Nothing. It did what it said on the tin. My daughters loved their time at this site. Next time we’ll stay longer and try some lessons.

We loved the horses around the paddocks and our little one was mesmerised watching the riding lessons while we took down the tent.
The site is small and the staff v friendly, facilities are fine albeit just two toilets and one shower for 6 pitches could be not great if the site was too busy.

Very Friendly Staff. as its a small campsite very quite. Lovely walks and local village not to far you could walk but as i had young children and there is no path I drove.
Great local fish and chips. great base for exploring suffolk & norfolk. good value for money.

    Disliked:

Only one toilet that is used for campers Staff and riders taking lessons. so at times was quite a queue and it takes so long to refill that if you go in straight after someone else you cannot flush. Also only one shower.

Small and very peaceful site with incredibly friendly and helpful staff. Also enjoyed the horse riding lessons booked on site. Facilities were basic but kept clean and there was a washing machine and dryer available, although we didn't use them. They also let us use a freezer in the riding centre for our ice packs. Not sure what the washing up facilities were, as we only found very small sinks in the toilets.

    Disliked:

Fortunately, the site wasn't full when we stayed (maybe due to reduced capacity thanks to COVID), but having only one male and one female toilet and one unisex shower I expect could get problematic if the site were busier, although the shower was good with plenty of hot water.

Directions

Turn off the A1088 at the signpost for Bardwell; once you've made this turn the site is the second drive on the left: the long drive between leylandii hedges. Look out for a brown sign at the end of the drive with a caravan, tent and horse on.

Local attractions

Bardwell’s a good place to set out for a stroll or a cycle ride in the Stanton Rides, which has three circular trails running through the splendid Suffolk scenery (totalling 28 miles if you do the lot).

If you’ve still got leg power left, there are more walks to be had in Thetford Forest Park (20 minutes’ drive). If not, perhaps it’s time for a gentler day out at Bressingham (25 minutes), where you can hitch a ride on the steam railway, take a slow-paced gallop on traditional fairground rides and explore Walmington-on-Sea memorabilia at the official Dad’s Army Appreciation Society collection.

Leave the country views behind for a bit and head over to Bury St Edmunds (15 minutes) for a day of bimbling around the historic town, taking in the cathedral and abbey gardens, or meandering around the market (if you’re in town on a Wednesday or Saturday). It could well be thirsty work, so perhaps it’d also be wise to plan a stop at the Greene King brewery for a tour or a pint at the beer café.
