  • Static caravan on a 100-acre farm overlooking the Haddiscoe Marshes
  • Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth within a 20-minute drive
  • Fresh farm produce for sale; blacksmith taster days and courses
Meander through marshes and saunter alongside the sea from Thorpe Hall Manor, a quiet and well-kept farm site in the hamlet of Thorpe-next-Haddiscoe. With 100 acres of farmland, a nature pond and fab marshy views to keep you occupied, this will be a tempting hideaway for those looking to unplug in a countrified, nature-packed place near the coast. Thorpe Hall Manor may be located in deepest East Anglia, but rare breed animals that hail from other parts of the British Isles call this place home too – the likes of Hebridean sheep and Golden Guernsey goats. The farm also keeps chickens, pigs, turkeys and cattle, meaning lots of fab, farm-fresh produce is on hand. As well as its ultra-local food, Thorpe Hall Manor manages its land in a less intensive way, allowing wildlife to thrive in its many quieter corners. If you're keen to brush up on your countryside skills, take a look at the blacksmiths' forge on site – here guests can sign up for taster days and courses. If you're after something more delicate, the site also runs jewellery courses in which you can make your own rings, earrings and the like (please book ahead for courses). The accommodation here is spacious and bright, and comes with a kitchen space, living area and comfy double bedroom. Inside, there's a separate (and very clean) composting loo, with shared flush toilets and hot showers a short walk away. All this is a few steps from a Saxon church, a 16th-century country house, the edge of the Haddiscoe Marshes and a nifty cut-through to Haddiscoe station. The nearest pub, where tasty meals are served, is about a 15-minute stroll away.

1 bedroom static caravan

Liked: The friendliness of the owner, the cleanliness of the site, the fact that the goats and chickens were roaming around, the quality of the produce that the owner was able to supply. It was all good and we will definitely be going back again for another stay! Not rated child friendliness as we don't have children, although they would enjoy the animals, and not rated wifi as we didn't use it although it was available.

Disliked: Nothing.

Liked: To start, Chris is the most amazing host you will ever meet. Coming to Thorpe Hall is a blessing if you are looking for a place to get away from it all. This is a working farm, so if your coming in your Guccis, look elsewhere, however if you want to be somewhere where you are greeted by goats in the morning, want to walk through glorious land for miles on end and escape for a few days, this is for you. The caravan itself is well equipped with everything you need, including a small oven and hob, which I’ve successfully used to cook many meals! The double bed is comfortable and a Z bed is usually available if you have an extra guest, make sure you ask in advance. There is a bucket style toilet and no shower, however you have use of the facilities in the main manor opposite for this purpose. Chris goes out of his way to interact and make sure you’re comfortable, despite being extremely busy with his farm and business - nothing is too much hassle. He had a sound understanding of the area, and can happily guide you to the nearest pub or town, some of which are on foot, if you like a walk! Haddiscoe train station is easily accessible with trains into Lowestoft and Norwich, making this an ideal location for a visit to the seaside or to a major city, boasting an amazing cathedral. I cannot fault this place - some might - if they are expecting 5G phone signal, a TV or the ultimate in luxury - it’s not that and doesn’t pretend to be. It’s a beautiful rural setting, where you go to escape from it all, see clear skies with gleaming stars and embrace nature. Chris, we cannot wait to return

Local attractions

Being towards the southern end of the Broads, there are bucketloads of pleasant rural waterways to cycle along, canoe down and watch wildlife by. Start off by calling in at St Olaves (five minutes' drive), a secluded spot on the Waveney river whose perpetual popularity can be explained by its well-preserved priory, Victorian suspension bridge and boat hire options. Like Haddiscoe, St Olaves has a station on the spectacular Wherry Line – from here, you can glide along to Lowestoft (20 minutes), a splendid seaside spot over the border in Suffolk, or chug on down to Berney Arms (30 minutes), a gorgeously remote request stop on the edge of a nature-rich RSPB reserve. Besides boating and birdwatching, Thorpe Hall Manor is well-located for family-friendly field trips to Great Yarmouth's Sea Life Centre (20 minutes), Pleasurewood Hills theme park (20 minutes) and brilliant Burgh Castle (20 minutes). Norwich's variety of kid-pleasing activities are close by too, with a bowling alley, castle and cinema all on the menu.
